I'm having a bit of a problem. About a month ago I hit a monstrous pothole. A short while later, pulling into the garage I noticed a vibrating sound coming from the from end. Upon further inspection I found I had cracked my front passenger side fender. The crack is at the top bracket. Anyhow, to make a long story short I took it to a body shop, the guy assured me he could fix it, even make it better than stock. Anyhow about a week and half ago I got the car back only to have it crack again...only this time it was under normal driving conditions, on good roads. I took it back and he told me he would correct the problem, but he's been to busy to get to it right away, so he told me he would return my money so I can have repaired somewhere else. I think he was just looking for a way out of it at this point, as he seemed a bit confused as to why the initial repair didn't hold. Ok...now I'm looking for another shop to do the work, is there any tips you guys could give me for repairing this that I could pass on to next guy that I find? Do I need to replace the whole fender? Summer is passing me by...and no kat...please help. Also, the first guy told me he had a hard time locating the rivets for the bracket...any thoughts on where I can locate these and how they are connected. Thank you in advance |

The rivets are cheap and are available, the problem is the fact that it takes a special tool to install those rivets. You can replace them with other more common hardware. A good fiberglass person should be able to fix it correctly. Go to a hotrod shop and ask them about it. |

forget the rivets, there called huck rivets, they are cheap, the problem is the tool to install them is over 1000.00.nobody has one.instead, use 5/16 stove bolts.the crack needs to be vd out and repaired with fiberglass resin and cloth on both sides of crack, its the only way to keep it from cracking again.if the brkt and rivets are in the way then remove them.you might try a chevy dealer b/s since corvettes are also made from smc-sheet molded compound.you could also call your ins.co,and get a hold of a damage appraiser and ask them who they recommend for smc repairs.as you have found out, some shops have no idea on how to repair smc properly.you must use fiberglass clth and resin on both sides to keep it from cracking again.prowler fdrs get alot of vibration and must be fixed properly to avoid future cracks in same area.if they wont glass both sides find another shop. ------------------ |

I had a fender break in half so my only way was to replace it... A POA member here sold me his spare for a great price and I bought GaryE's chrome fender brackets that came with the panhead bolts thyat replaced the rivets... You might want to think about going this route in your fix... |

Dan - remove your fender and ship it to Don Ward here in Houston. He just fixed a crack in my fender for me and did a phenomenal job. He's been with POA for a very long time and knows his stuff on the Prowlers. He owns A-1 Collision in Spring, Texas (just north of Houston). I drove 4 hours each way just to have him work on my Prowler. His number is 832/717-4977. PM me if you have any questions. T |

Thank you guys! I've been so busy, this issue has been driving me crazy. As soon as I read Ed and Catfish's response, I realized I had a hotrod shop, I had completely forgot about, right up the road. I took it to him, and I finally believe 'I'm on the road to recovery'. I don't get on POA as much as I'd like to anymore, but its great to know I can count on my POA family when I need them. Thanks again. |
