Research has shown that the best cold air intake on a prowler is the stock box. All the others just suck in all the hot air (and other stuff) from under the hood.
The purpose of an air filter is to filter all the crap out of the incoming air. Research also showed that Fram filters showed to do this best. If you want more air and less filtering of the air, I think the K&N was the one with greater air flow and least filtering.

The original owner of my 2000 Kat installed a dual cold air intake on the car. It looks cool but I have reservations about it's effectiveness and worry about the possibility of other problems as a result of the modification.

The intake modification starts at the back of the plenum and immediately splits into two tubes that work their way down to under the car where they turn toward the front of the car and end with cone shaped air cleaner.

Both of the air cleaner's face forward which is great for getting the air into the system until it rains.
I am concerned about the water getting into the air stream, clogging the filters.

The original owner took the time to wrap the headers and catalytic converters as well as the air cleaner intake tubes to keep the incoming air as cool as possible while on the way to the plenum.

Because the filters stick down below the frame I worry they could hit the pavement in some situations. The other worry is how effective the filters are while only inches from the ground and have heard that the air temperature that close to the pavement could be as warm or warmer than the temperature inside the engine compartment.

My inclination is to remove these and replace them with a system that is closer to stock but I have procrastinated as I always seem to do

Lot's of discussion over the years about cold air intakes. There are a few commercial options and a few folks have even fab'ed up their own. The problem is that all the choices are confined to the engine compartment where they suck hot air from under the hood. The stock air box at least pulls cooler air in from the side.
The BEST choice would be a functional hood scoop or vented side panel.
BTW - you WILL get noticeably better performance and gas mileage with a K&N filter. But as idive suggested, the K&N's may not filter as adequately as some of the other non-oiled filters.

I had no idea there was a second set of those panels around. I repaired a set for Bob Miller a couple years ago.

Stock air box with a K&N air filter.

Actually it was Tony who assisted me in tracking down one unused set of his panels. I think he made 7 or 8 sets before the mold broke.
