Recently got my Personal Property tax bill from the state of VA. They assessed my 2001 Prowler at $26,875. I don't know where they got that number from exactly, but I think it's low, but I'm not complaining. I'm sure they have a computer system that links into the Kelly Book values or something similar. Anyway the tax this year on my Kat is $613.39 - $588.30 is tax and $25 is for the window sticker. So my tax is .0219% of the assesseed value.

I'd be curious what sort of Personal Property tax other states have and also what sort of tax assessment other Virginia residents got nailed with.

When you buy a car you pay state sales tax of 4.5% I think it is, then each year you own the car, boat, airplane, truck, etc. you get a Personal Property tax bill from the county. I should mention that this tax is a Fairfax County tax and not a state tax. I don't think all jurisdictions in VA pay this tax.

The roads in Fairfax are no better than anyplace else, so that's not really a benefit. I do know that this fiscal year, ending June 30, 2005, the State of Virginia and the County of Fairfax had millions in surplus, so rather than give it back to the people who paid too much tax, they looked for ways to spend it.

Gary - you have a great idea! I'm taking my Kat to Mozambique and register it in Maputo. I may get car-jacked, but at least I won't be paying any tax...

no personal property tax in Illinois, plates are $82.

Illinois just gets you on use tax(sales tax) when you originally purchase the vehicle. depending on what part of the state you live in from 6.5% to 10% I think is the highest.

I paid 134.00 to put plates on the Prowler... thats for 2 years....
we pay 15% sales tax on almost all purchases ( not on food ) this helps pay for our health care system. (a great deal )
the taxes included in the price of gas are supposed to maintain the roads.... (the roads suk, so we are getting screwed here ).
I pay about $600 per year for property tax and appx 27% of my pay for income tax.

New Mexico sales tax on vehicle purchases is 3% . The rate for tags is based on age of vehicle (at time of registration) and weight, so the cost stays the same forever as long as you own the car, unless they decide to raise the rate which they did a couple of years ago. You get a break when you renew for two years ($0.50 total - WOW!)

Personal taxes in Missouri paid for 2004 were as follows;

02 Trailblazer $262.92
00 F-150 Truck 162.58
01 Harley Dyna 164.34
03 Harley LowRdr 213.78
00 Prowler 401.12
04 Lexus 659.30
Trailers (misc) 131.17
Boat30'ChrisCraft 835.60
Boat Pontoon 129.03
Boat Dock 71.16
Bike Trailer 29.03
Prowler Trailer 98.10

Total 2004 $3158.13

My new vette will be here before the end of the year so I will have to pay tax on it for all of 2005. They estimate $800-1000. I also have a 2005 Harley Ultra Classic which will be on next years bill.

By us anything you buy prior to December 31st of the year you pay personal property tax for the entire year. If you purchased after December 31st, say in January sometime...you would not pay until the following year.

Here in "Taxachusetts" we pay a 5% Sales Tax on purchases except clothing and food. We pay an excise tax on vehicles, trailes, motorcycles and boats at a state set rate of $25.00 per $1,000 in value. It is paid to the city or town you live in and is only for the months per year the vehicle is registered. The excise bill for my 2001 Plymouth (Prowler) was $30.00 for April to December 2005. They valued my 2001 Plymouth (Prowler) at $ 1,600.00.

Vanity plates are $71.00 per year.

Do you think I am going to call them up and complain.
Here is my response to that.

In MD there is no PP tax...Never had it in all the time I lived in Joisey...so the posts I have read here over time about this subject is mindblowing...

I just can't imagine paying tax over and over every year on one purchase. What a major scam. I would never bought the Prowler if I was going to be bent over like that from the state every year...

Kentucky has property tax on cars- it is several hunderd per year and must be paid before you get new sticker for license plate.

Our property tax on our house is fairly cheap compared to some other areas. Some states have higher sales tax and others have different amounts assessed for state income tax while a few states have no income tax.

Taxes from state to state vary but I won't sell my Prowler because I have to pay property tax on it.

It cost me $388 to renew our plates on the Prowler this year. $20 of that is the tag fee and the rest is taxes.
