....I must admit when the Prowler was first introduced I was sort of "underwhelmed" ....I was into Vipers and the six banger Kat just didn't get my vote...
....I saw the 97 go for mega $$$ at Auburn and was even less impressed.....finally, a friend of mine bought one of the first 99 Prowlers made, right here at our local dealership.....I knew he had the Kat and saw it around town a few times but I really had little interest in the car....one day while finishing my lunch at the local hangout, my buddy comes in with a guy from Detroit DC and asked for the keys to my Viper sitting out in the parking lot....he wanted to take his buddy a Viper ride......since my wife and I were just getting ready to leave the restraunt he left me the keys to his new purple Prowler....I knew it would probably be a few hours before he returned my Viper, so my wife and I took a short cruise around town and hit a few of the county roads....the car was FUN, LOTS OF FUN !!!...I dropped her off at work and I continued to drive the Kat for another hour or so before parking it beside my house.....a little while passed and I heard my buddy screaming down the street in my Viper, it was not stock and VERY loud.....we chatted a short time and traded keys....I could tell his friend from Detroit had plenty of excitement that afternoon riding in the big V10......
...a few weeks later my friend and I visited several dealerships looking at Kats....finally found one I liked at a small dealership and took my wife back to look at the car and she didn't like the car at all, hated the color....so I just kinda blew it off and forgot all about it.....a few more weeks passed and there was a black Kat for sale in Noblesville Indiana at Goeke Dodge....the car had been damaged in the showroom by a small kid.....he drew circles and lines all over the car with a rock while the parents were looking at a minivan with the salesman on duty.....the only panel undamaged by this kid was the drivers door.....I was able to get them down to $49K for the car since it was damaged....but I left it there and continued to look....I finally ordered my wife a new 99 Vette a few days later and the same day my buddy stops by and tells me about the 99 black Kat at the local dealership....a friend of mine owns the dealership and his sales manager was a good friend of mine also.....they tried to sell me the Kat, it was priced at $75K, but I said no way, I just ordered a Vette that morning and I certainly wasn't going to pay a premium for a Prowler.....they asked if I would take the car for MSRP, I thought about it for about 10 seconds, said yes and the car was stored till Xmas eve as a gift for my wife.....that is another whole story in itself, she hated it and wanted her Sebring Conv back, she was NOT a happy camper at all, so it became my car ......
...so, my first Kat encounter was from trading cars at lunch...I think it belongs to a POA member in Colorado now....

AC....if you look REALLY close, you can see Cookies' bra hanging on a stalk of corn and Steve McQueen is still zipping up his drawers.......

....I have watched that Mustang ad over and over....it is possibly the best automotive advertisement EVER .....I went to the local Ford dealer the other day to look at a new black Mustang GT......must admit, it is the first Ford I have had much interest in in a very long time.....sharp car....

A friend of mine knew I was car crazy and really liked his Prowler. In April he asked me when my birthday was and I told him June 28. He said that it would be out of storage by then and I could go for a ride on my birthday. Never gave it a serious thought after that. On the night of June 27 one of his employees comes over to my house and hands me a Chrysler key and says "Tom said that you would know what to do with this!" My heart is pounding and I rush in to check my emails. The email from Tom says: "When you get the key go pick up the Prowler at the airport and have it back tomorrow night by 7:00 PM when I get back from my business trip. Happy Birthday!" Ya, I thought he meant a ride not drive. So yes life was perfect that day. It gets even better because the next year he lets me have it for 4 days. I did wash it everyday and waxed it twice. After that my wife insisted that I buy one because she saw how happy I was driving Tom's. I told her no that they were too expensive but she kept on my case about buying one. Since I am the second "poorest Prowler owner" until SPOONs and I can compare balance sheets, I didn't think I would ever have one. At the time (06/02) they were selling for $36,000+ and I told my wife if we can find one at $30,000 or less we would buy it. That shut her up because up until that time we had never spent more than $6,000 for a car! But life takes a turn for the better and a month later I win $5000 in a local contest and in October 02 I approach a dealer about used Silver 01 with 4300 miles. I make an insane offer of $29,900 and he says: "You just bought the car." He didn't want to keep the car becasue it was 6 months until nice weather and I am thinking its only 6 months until nice driving weather. Thank God for a good friend and GREAT wife!

Oopps, forgot my first Prowler experience.

None, before buying. Missed buying a black Y2K cat for MSRP by three hours because my deposit check couldn't be there in time before a guy from LA walks into the dealership and buys the cat I was promised the next cat that came to the Lincoln, Nebraska dealership. Wanted a black cat.

On Christmas eve, 1999,,,,,the call comes that the cat has arrived at the dealership. Only one small problem, it is silver instead of black. They knocked $500 off the price, and I mailed them the full amount. Jumped a plane to Lincoln on Jan 15th, 2000 and picked up the cat the next day. Drove it 7 miles from dealership to a friend work place,,,,,and put the nose on the first curb I parked at Was planning on staying there three days at my brother's home, but a fast approaching snow storm was approaching eastern Nebraska, so I decided to take off at 8:00pm on the day of delivery. Drove 100 miles west of Lincoln when first sprinkles of rain preceeding the snow started to fall. I immediately grab the first highway south and head for Kansas. Stopped in Salina, Ks to sleep a few hours in the cat, and then started west again along I-70 which was south of the snow storm hitting Nebraska. Drove all the way across Kansas battling 40 to 50 mph cross winds AND 614,000 tumbleweeds crossing the road in front of me Only hit half of them and had to stop every 50 miles to clean out the abundant amount of tumbleweeds that collected into the front A-arms and front bumpers [CJ is right, those front bumpers do have a purpose],,,,it was like I was a Prowler push truck out there on I-70 gathering all of those tumbleweeds collecting into the front of the cat Made it to Colorado and the weather cleared and it was smooth sailing all the way back to Phoenix. Made it back home, washed the cat, put the top down, and went out to enjoy the 79 degree January sunshine. God, this is a great place to live.
The end.

Wow - it's great reading these stories.

Ever since I saw the concept Prowler on display at the Kentucky Derby in 1994 or 1995 I knew I wanted one (but figured I would never be able to afford one) When they first started producing them and dealer mark up put out them WAY out of reach, I continued to bore my friends and family with stories of what I would do if I ever got the chance to own one. I kept saying "if they ever get down below $40K I'll buy one" In April 2001 I saw an ebay listing for a 2000 black sitting in Paducah, Kentucky - only 3 1/2 hours away from us but centuries away from almost anywhere else. I bid $39K and bragged all week how I had finally made "an offer" on a Prowler. The next week Rebecca & I had taken my daughter Lindsay to a soccer tournament in Nashville and while there my son Ryan calls and says there are only 3 minutes left and I was still the high bidder. I did not know he had been tracking it all week. I about freaked when the auction was over - how was I going to find financing?? Well, I lined up a loan and the follwing Wednesday I took Ryan out of school - he was a senior in high school at the time and went to pick up the car. That was the first time I ever saw a Prowler up close (other than the concept) much less sat in one or drove one. I handed Ryan the keys and had so much fun following it, riding beside it, getting in front and looking in the mirror, I let him drive it all the way home. He said he was thrilled and would "always remember" the time he drove a Prowler. The next weekend was his senior prom and I surprised him by giving him the keys take the Prowler to the Prom. The whole family has been driving it ever since!

AC....I have a few other projects in mind before I would ever get a Mustang, but I think Ford has hit the ball clean outta the park with this car....they have a hit on their hands....I would like to see a new GT conv.....the car looks good in silver, although the black was very good looking....it will be a few years before I have the ambition to own another black car again....

I have decided on the color for my Prowler project, and it is not orange......it is a Ford color from loooong ago.....going to get serious looking for another Kat soon....still trying to get all the parts together first...

...the only thing my front bumpers were good for was knocking the crap outta my knee several times while cleaning the car.....the last time I hit my knee on the bumper it took me to the ground and my knee was outta shape for several weeks and still hurts to this day.... the next day I removed the bumpers and have never replaced them....

Saw one at the auto show and said "That is Cool" and thought to myself they would never make it. Jump ahead my dad says they are going to make it and has told the dealer he wants the first one they get. Jump ahead dealer calls says the car would be show up in a couple months, dad and me are excited! Jump ahead dealer calls and says it will take $90000 to own it! Dad goes Kiss my a$$! calls the local chev dealer and gets new C5. Jump ahead dad says I need to get the Corvette out of your storage building to trade it in, does not tell me what he it trading it in for, shows up a couple days later with a 99 Yellow to put away for the winter. From that point the rest is history between the 2 of us we have had 7 of them as drivers ( soon to be 8 ) and all of them the bumpers were defective as they all fell off. So help us make it 8 I still need a 2000 or newer for $27000 or less, does not matter if its scratched up or even runs, must have clean title and straight frame.

I 1st saw the Prowler concept at the Mopar Nationals in `94 or `95.

The orginal press on the car stated that they would be 25~30K. We felt we could afford that.

Sue and I fell in LOVE with the car.

I read all I could find about it saving or buying anything that had the PROWLER in the article. Once the toy company started making prowler toys, I STARTED BUYING them too.

In Feb of `96 I put a $1,000 to be able to buy the second car the dealer got, Dale Smith had put a grand down for the 1st one earlier that day. The deal was I got the second car for GREEN SLIP if chrysler would allow it or MSRP if not. Because of what the dealers did to the Vipers I thought MSRP on a Prowler when they were 1st released would be a good buy.

I got a lot of flak for putting money down on a car I didn't know when would be built or how much it would cost.

I would go to dealers that had them just to look at them, I left a lot of nose prints on the windows.

The 1st one I was able to sit in was Tom Amo's `97. He had brought it to our cruise night and we talked for a long time. I told him I had not been able to sit I one yet and if he would mind if I sat in his, which he said OK.

My car was delivered to the dealer on a Saturday. They didn't call me that day. The saleman that wrote up the deal was no longer there and they didn't have my number, but they had my dad's. So sometime that afternoon after I had went to work they called my dad. That evening Sue and my dad was in the parking lot when I was going out for lunch. dad told me that they wanted me to call the dealership. He didn't say why but I told him my car was in.

I was right and the next morning he and I went to the dealer to look at the car. I had butterflies standing next to it. it ws unbelievable to think this beautiful Yellow Prowler was actually mine. Off to the bank with the paper work and the next day Sue, Dad and I went back to the dealer to take delivery of the Prowler. On the drive home it rained on me so I got to clean it before going to work that afternoon.

I use to tell everyone that I was the poorest Prowler owner until JP came along and put it in his signature.

Before it ever came I was making plans for the Chrome grill & wheels (still want the chrome front end) and custom paint.

We bought the car July 15th, 1998. In November it was on the lift, wheels off to be chromed, me polishing the frame and everything else aluminum, December it was at the painters for the graphics, It had 17" wheels off a guy's Monte Carlo at the tire shop and white wagon wheels out of the trailer I was using.

I made it to the World of Wheels show in Indy in Feb. Most people had never seen a Prowler much less one with a custom paint job. I heard many comments about how it took HUGE B*LLS to do that to a Prowler

For those that have been to the house knows I have a few Prowler diecast. The magazines are all put up but I have stacks of them too. I was wanting to have the BEST collection of Prowler stuff but I think CJ has me beat plus she is a lot more organized. And Rich Ware has a fine collection by taking and painting one of each color, plus he has books organized with his paperwork and photo's.

Larry - I think you three (you, CJ, Rich) and cnote plus a few others with significant collections (or in CJ's case an entire Prowler room ) should take photos and post pics of all your Prowler stuff. We all know Mike & Judy have a multi thousand square feet garage/museum but there are some of you that have quite impressive Prowler collections as well that I am sure others would enjoy seeing.

Larry it has been awhile since I updated the books, but I am again adding to them. Hope to have them finished to bring to the Dells event and also Woodward. They will be loaded with pictures of modified Prowlers among other things. I have two 4 inch binders full of stuff and will porbably have to expand to a third before long. I have so many pictures to print it will very likely take that long to finish. Actually they will never be finished.

Our Prowler experience:
When I married Linda in 1984 I had a 29 Ford Coupe HiBoy Street Rod with a Mustang 289. The car weighed less than 2,000 lbs and was extremely fast. We both really enjoyed driving in it. When we moved from Utah to Georgia in 1985 we sold the Coupe to help finance our new home in Georgia. The plan was to replace it when finances permitted. Over the next 14 years we had a few toys but nothing we could really enjoy because they were either always in process of being restored or repaired and we were also busy raising the four of our six kids that lived with us. I first started seeing the Prowlers in magazines. I fell in love with it, but all the rumors of 90 to 100K price tags dashed my hopes of actually ever owning one. In 1998 I went to the Atlanta Auto Show and they had a purple Prowler there. I saw the MSRP was just under 40K and I told my son in law (who was with me) "I Can Do That". I went home and showed Linda a picture, but she was not impressed. Said she would rather I start looking for another Street Rod. Again my bubble was burst. A couple months later we went to an Oldies Concert which had a car show in conjunction. There was a dealer there with his personal purple Prowler and trailer. Linda saw it and asked what it was. When I told her she was surpised, that the pictures I had previously shown her did not do it justice and said she would love if we could get. I went to a friend who worked at the Chrysler dealer and told him I wanted to get a Prowler in about a year. He told me to just give him a month and half notice when I was ready. During the next year they got a couple Prowlers in at the dealer. Each time they would call and ask if we were ready. Each time we had to tell them we simply had to wait for the extra income starting June of 1999. I did eventually get to sit in one, when a yellow came in, but I actually had to beg before they would let me. Finally April 14, 1999 came around. I called my friend told him we were still serious and that we were ready to buy on June 1st. He called back in a couple hours and said he had a Prowler for us. I was thrilled, stunned and dismayed all at the same time. I reminded him I had to wait until June 1st. He told me not to worry, they would work it out so we would not have to start making payments until June. The Kat was in Alabama. We did the deal, they sent a slide away truck to Alabama to pick it up and on April 15th we drove it home. The rest is history.

I saw one in a dealership way east of Cincinnati. They wanted $ 89,000. End of story.
Mid to Late March, 1999, I went to the car show downtown to see the new T-Bird and the new C-5. I went on the first night of the show, Thursday. No T-Bird. Only one in existence and it is in Chicago at the BIG car show. No C-5. I ran into a guy who works at a Chrysler dealership and bitched about paying to get into a car show to see 2 cars, neither of which is actually there. He says, go look at the Prowler. I said I am not paying twice sticker price. He tells me they are down to $ 45,000. I look, it is Purple, the ONLY color they came in, as far as I knew.
The next night I am exiting I-74 and the only local Prowler crosses my bow. That did it. I am buying one. I was on my way to Poker. I told all of them I was getting a Prowler. "Yeah, right" was the general consensus.
I called my brother about golf and he told me he bought a new Sebring. I asked why he bought that and he said his son was working at Chrysler Financial and got him a deal. I told him I was going to buy a Prowler, ever hear of it. He told me they had a BLACK on at the dealer, where he bought his Sebring, in Florence, KY. He is not a car person so I knew he couldn't tell Purple from Black but I went over to the dealership. It was midnight with no lights on inside so it was tough to tell it was Black. I got on the computer (NOT knowing anything about computers)and saw an ad on eBay (?) with a picture of a RED Prowler. Holy Cow, I gots to get me one of those for sure.
Went to the dealership to see the guy who I had seen at the Car Show. He told me RED were selling for $50,000. I said I can handle that. He gave me a print out for the Cincinnati zone, Atlanta zone and Pittsburgh zone, I think. I started calling. Already sold, the dealer is keeping it for himself, we lose money selling them for $ 50,000, we'll put you on our list, etc. I got to about the 10th dealer on the list, in Fowler, IN. and the guy tells me they have a RED with 4 miles on it for $ 45,000. Out the door? "YES" SOLD!
I told him I would be there the next day. Give me directions.
I-65 North to exit 188. Go west until the road ends and turn right. Couple of blocks. "How far is it from I-65 to the end of the road?" About 11 miles. 11 Miles of corn and NOTHING else. I thought I was lost. Next morning I called them again. I am going to be there this afternoon, do I need a Certified check or will you take a personal check? Certified Check will be better. "What time is it there now" Diff. time zone.
My oldest son went with me and we got to this tiny dealership that sold Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Ford, Chevy and maybe some foreigh cars. Showroom was big enough for 2 or 3 cars, max. EVERYONE that worked there was in the showroom to see the guy who bought the Prowler. My son said, "Dad, the door only opens about a foot, you are not going to fit". My reply, "I just gave the man a check for $ 45,000 and it is going home today. We went up the street and filled it up. It was cool out so the top was up. It rode like a jitney on the rough road heading back to the Expressway. I watched in agony as the gas gauge dropped dramatically and I used about 1/4 tank just getting back to the X-Way. I am thinking I should have asked about the MPG, MAYBE. My initial reaction to the color was a big disappointment, seeing the red under the artificial light. It was not appealing but it was still a totally cool car.
We turned onto the ramp and as I exited the ramp to make the merge, an 18 wheeler blew his horn. I was about to give him 20 % of a high five, the middle 20 %, and I looked at him and he is giving me a thumbs up. I know this is hard to believe, but I was not expecting ANY type of reaction to the car. At that point, I had a tremendous amount of mixed emotions. I was still nervous about the car, I was not impressed with the color as much as I had hope to be, I am wondering what the reaction is going to be after the truck driver, I wondered if I was going to need gas before we got back to INDY. I was wondering if I would ever get used to the confined feeling of the car and the lack of a sightline.
We got to Indy and the gas gauge had stabilized. I pulled over & my son asked what was up. I said I figure you will want to drive it. Just keep an eye on the gas and pull in if you think it is getting low.
Sandy was out of town and did not know I was even thinking about buying it. She about flipped out when she saw it.
My second oldest son said he thought it was a mistake, I should have gotten a Vette, until he saw the car. He changed his mind on the spot.
The second one had a lot of drama, but not the same type of drama. It took forever to make the deal but I got a better deal. I won't bother with that story since it is not interesting EITHER lol.

I fell in love with the Prowler the first time I saw the concept back in 1993 or 1994. I knew, then and there, that I would have one of the first year models. In 1995 I called around to many dealerships to try to get on their waiting lists, but the lists were already long and I knew I had to try something else. I made a deposit with Latham Motors in early 1996 and went in wait mode. The Prowler was always shown at the Dallas Auto Show and the car show at the Texas State Fair, so those became my main draws each year while I waited for mine. The cars started getting delivered some time in 1997 but due to the small production numbers Latham wasn't getting as many as they had hoped. in late 1997 I started checking all the Plymouth dealers in Texas to see if they had any available to keep my options open. Most of the dealers I called that had one told me that the owner was keeping their only Prowler and it wasn't for sale. The rest of them wanted $80K to $100K, and I wasn't willing to pay that much. One dealership in San Antonio told me I could have theirs for $80K and I passed on it. I wrote notes about all of my research and remember writing that the sales manager from that dealership was very nice and quite helpful. I finally pulled my deposit with Latham due to their delays and thought I'd have to end up waiting for a 1999 model. In March 1998 I was in San Antonio visiting some good friends. We had an hour to fill so I took them to see the Prowler. I spoke to the sales manager again and we worked their price down a lot. I told them I had to sleep on the deal, but I was so excited to have been that close that I didn't sleep a wink. I called tham at 8:01 the next morning and told them to get it ready for me. I flew back to San Antonio with my dad and we drove it home. While I was talking to the sales manager about the car another salesman came up and asked when the guy that was buying the Prowler would be in. He pointed to me and the salesman looked back in disbelief. I guess he expected that someone a lot older than 31 wouyld be buying the car. The drive back to Dallas was the best drive I have ever had. Four or five people leaned out of their windows to take pictures as they drove by and dozens of people honked, waved and gave us the thumbs-up sign. I now have 26K miles on the car, but each time I drive it is almost as exciting as that very first drive... :-)

I forgot to mention that I applied for my personal license plate, PRWLR in 1996. I even had to pay to renew the plate one year before the car came in. The folks at the DMV were quite amused at that...
