Got my Automobile Magazine in the mail today...cover story featuring "Top 100 Cars". Unless I missed it, our beloved Prowler didn't even make the list. Can an entire staff "not get it"? Kevin ------------------ |

I knew I liked the Prowler the first time I saw one, I did not know how much until I owned one. Automobile magazine or Brock Yates have both missed the boat but I dont care as I have mine and Love it. Their loss. Barry |

I'm afraid I must open a can of worms here. I spent over 45 years of my life rapper up with the Citroen product line and a passing experience with the Renault. The R5 turbo that was on that list is extremely down the road from the std. R5. It was a mid eng. screamer that could handle extremely well and haul a** as well. I got to drive a couple of them on several occasions and one of them on a track. They were ossiam !!! Very few people even know what they were and there were very few of them in this country-legal or illegal. They could run away and hide from most cars of there time and were a blast to drive. As to the Citroens, the SM was overrated. It was fast for its engine size and if kept up properly and upgraded it was a very nice car to drive and to most people it sure looked better that it's sister car the DS Citroen. They had electrical problems. They could be straightened out, "cus I did a number of them. The mechanical problems were almost always caused by either poor, or improper service. The biggest problem was the owners not having a clue about service. Over and over I had these cars loosing engines because the owners would not do the mantaince schedules in a timely manner. It was a real problem. When this model was properly maintained they were a real performer. Now I come to the Citroen DS(and the other models-ID,DSM,IDM etc) I am a qualified expert on these cars having some 1600+ of them in my service base over my business carrier of some 32+ years. I won't even try to explain all the engineering stuff in these cars and the over 100 changes I came up with to make them really reliable and easier to service. You don't get to be a "Century car" unless you really have something unique. Most people would not even understand what that co. did with the engineering on that car over the lifetime of the model(1955 to 1975).It would take pages and pages here to try to explain all this to anyone. I firmly believe that the D series and the R5 turbo belong on that list but I do agree that others do not. It's my considered option and only mine-so there!!! Obi-Wan |

I've read Automobile since it was first published. David E. Davis founded it after he lost Car & Driver. Carol Shelby cautioned me years ago about Jean Jennings, the current publisher. He was right. It isn't worth the time for me to write them. They wouldn't listen anyway. Not worth canceling my subscription either. Too much hassle but I will not renew. Since they changed formats, its nothing more than a recap of what other magazines are saying and OEM brain washed regurgitation. Brock Yates sold out and lost it a long time ago. How can these "informed" automotive writers miss the mark by so much? Prowler is what it always was intended to be, a tribute to the American hot rod and an experiment in new materials technology. Please show me a stylish all weather convertible that gets reasonable fuel economy, runs 14.9 - 15.2 in the quarter mile, has an aluminum frame and body, air bags to protect the occupants, a 3 year 36K warranty and costs $40 - 45K. Even in jaded old Detroit, people haven't a clue what kind of car it is and stop to ask questions about it. How many times have people had their pictures taken next to your car? Bob Lutz was right, either you get it or you don't. Automobile and Brock Yates have lost my loyalty. This message has been edited by RPL on 09-14-2004 at 02:19 PM |

Yeah, I read that magazine a couple days ago and was going to post something.......but I was still sitting here shaking my head and wondering what the heck these people are thinking! I can't believe that Prowler was not included. They have a forum where you can respond with your 10 ten list. Maybe we should all submit a Top Ten list with Prowler in all ten places! |

Okay I posted it that thread, only 2 other people posted listing Prowler Dennis q on page67 C Bigred on page90 me on page91 I read every page and a lot of great cars were listed many times by the readers, such as GTO's, 67 427 Vettes, Cobras, Vipers and other great cars. Someone even listed a Facel Vega and most people have no idea what that is. I only know because I helped a friend restore a 1958 Facel Vega in 1970 They are a French Touring car and most had a early Chrysler Hemi or a big block Chrysler engine. This was a neat car but how can it be a top 100 if most people dont know what it is ? On there site it said top 100 coolest cars and they asked for your opinion of the top 10. PROWLER=COOL VIPER=COOL HEMI CUDA=COOL GTO=COOL COBRA=COOL 427 VETTE=COOL There are a lot of other COOL cars but these are my Favorites. I know what I have with the Prowler and I really don't care whose list it makes or does not make. Those people have never influenced my choice of cars anyway. |

I don't really care for which cars are in the top 100...In my book, the top 2 are the Prowler and 63 Split Window. That's why they're both in my garage. ------------------ |

quote: My Fiat 500 only has 18 hp, top speed of 50 mph (60 mph downhill with a good tail wind) Can be lifted by one person(to change a flat tire) has less trunk space than the prowler(trunk in front, engine in back) but gets as much looks and smiles as the Prowler. I agree that the Prowler should have been on the list but understand why the Fiat 500 is on the list. ------------------ |
