I've danced around this issue--thought about asking since day one, but didn't. I'd really like to hear what all is available (Borla for one), appx cost of each, appx noise level increases, HP increases, etc. I'm sure NEWBIES will wanna know--and let's face it, altho' the left margin indicates I'm a JUNKIE (which I really am), I'm still a newbie amongst THIS circle. So, I'm looking for facts, figures, drawbacks, & especially, the increased FUN FACTOR of switching to a different exhaust note. TIA, Ty-K |

"Bama - I have the Mopar/Borla on one of our cats, and I'd say it is one of the best systems out there. Easy cat back install, nice looking, SSteel, Pd $585, no noticeable hp gain, nice compromise sound that I enjoy, and I would say it carries the AC Stamp of Approval JMO ------------------

I have the Mopar Borla exhaust also. It sounds good, looks better then stock and it has no sharp edges to cut you when your cleaning your Kat. I think there are a few HP gain. Easy install, well worth the money! JMO ------------------ |

TOP 10 REASONS TO GET A BORLA: 1) If you call Marc or Jeff you'll get the Borla system for 10% over cost!!!That's APPROX. $500 or so compared to the list $750!!! 2) Gotta love the etched kitty on each tail pipe... 3) I think CJ mentioned the Borlas would be produced again if the need arised, but don't count on it sometimes. 4) My car sees rain, and my stock pipes were COVERED with rust! Crappy steel DC uses. The Borlas use the highest quality stailness steel, and after over a year of driving in ALL kinds of weather...NOT A SPEC OF RUST ANYWHERE ON THOSE BORLA PIPES!!!! 5)They sound good too... 6) You will never slice your hand up cleaning under you back bumpers with the new Borla tips. 7) The Borla bolts on in no time. ANy place can do it cheap or you can do it yourself, but be careful, it's tricky getting the passenger side pipe on....some tricky bending is required, and we had to remove the rear tire for clearance to wind the bendy pipe in place. 8) You can polish the whole thing to a nice shine if you wanted to for shows... 9) Did I mention they sound good? 10) MILLION MILE GUARANTEE!!!!! (RUN.... don't walk to get your Borla put on...You'll be so happy you did.) Some of the BEST money you can spend on the car. |

Just completed my Borla installation 2 weeks ago. I purchased it in May for $614.00 10% over cost so I was told by Bruce Hazelton. However bought it from my local dealer, they matched Bruce's price. Polished it myself in about 3 hours (with orbital air sander and then electric buffer) very happy with this system. Interesting to read BT161 had a problem with getting the passenger side pipe thru, exact thing happened to me....I thought I did something wrong. I also removed the rear wheel to get it in. Installation complete in 4 hours with 2 people. Easy! The sound is deeper with a little rumble when you back off the throttle. Really COOL. I have read here I think there might be a 12 to 14 hp gain. The new muffler is open and you can see thru with no obstructions, however the stock muffler looks to have several baffles and chambers which does prevent unrestricted flow. No way can see anything when looking thru it. Good luck with your decision, Bob |

R. : Told ya so...LOL. Ya wanna have some real giggles with your new Borla? Put it in auto stick.....drive in 3rd....then downshift to 2nd while doing 45-50 mph......RUMBLE...RUMBLE...giggle...giggle. Revs match from 3rd to 2nd at 40 MPH, so downshifting at a slightly higher speed makes such cool pops and burbles...more noticable with the top up for some reason... |

Ty-K, I have had straight pipes for about 4 1/2 years. I like the sound but others may think it is a little too loud. When you downshift it, you really hear it. If less restriction equals more horsepower, straight pipes should be worth more HP. I don't know if that is true in reality. You almost need to hear the different systems in person to make an informed decision. I paid $ 150 for stainless steel. I am going to change the other car over in the near future. I miss the rumble when I drive it. Only you can decide what you think is the best set up. |

I have 67 Corvette resonators (Sweet-Thunder) on my Kat and it sounds great to me . Loud , but I like it that way. Listen to as many different systems as you can and decide for yourself. Drive over to Hooters in Kennesaw , Ga. Sat. and listen to 6 or 7 different Kats. It is all in what you like!! This message has been edited by Eddie Powell on 07-17-2004 at 02:07 PM |

Thanks for the invite fellas...just did a mapquest and, altho' it's only 182 miles from Monkeyville (whar I live), I absolutely abhor driving thru Atlanta! Have driven thru it probably 100 times and STILL detest it immensely! "IF" the meeting was on my side of Atlanta, I'd be there! But, I absolutely refuse to drive my wife's unseen new P-Car thru Atlanta--at least until she sees it/drives it/etc. Oh! Did I mention hating Atlanta traffic? I thot I had! Would love to hear y'alls exhaust, but I would pay $100.00 just NOT to hafta drive thru !@#$&(^%!! HotLanta traffic! Appreciate ya' Ty-K This message has been edited by Ken & Vera Berry on 07-17-2004 at 03:18 PM |

Well, heck...the tips on my stock (I guess) exhaust look pretty good too--I thought--until reading these posts about the exceptional borla exhaust tips. How 'bout a pic or two of these Borla tips, brethren? Now, I gotta go back outside, lift up the car cover, and look at my tips again! Shazbaht! This is the Stock Prowler Tip(s) I have, correct? When the outlet necks cracked (resulting in a pronounced high rev Buzz). I could have welded it, but I never really cared for the (fairly common) sound it produced, and it gave me an excuse to sell the Borla. For me, I'm glad to lose the Borla... and I am MUCH happier with the old fashion glass pack, at a WAY better price. That's just my opinion and something for you to consider when you and Vera shop for a different sound. Again...Welcome, ------------------ |

Ken, your tips look great - looks like the previous owner pulled the 'baffles' out of the tips (they are common on stock exhaust tips) We just got back from Panama City where we spent the last couple of days - since we drove thru Montgomery we could have met but didn't think of that until now !! In our Cat we put the SSS Muffler which Jay Harris from Shimmers Co. sells and we really like it - especially since we cut off the stock tips (which had the baffles) and put "our own" tips on. By the way - you should hear Eddie's Prowler with his "Thunder" - now THAT's screaming !!!!!!! Also you might want to check out this link to a previous discussion : |

I selected Jay Harris' MOST EXCELLENT SSS Muffler...Sweet, Smooth, and Sassy!!! Inexpensive (can't remember price they were so reasonable...), easy install/switch with stock muffler (can put stock back on anytime)... SOUNDS SO GOOD! Everyone tells me they can tell when I am coming...not as in an obnoxious loud way, but smooth 'rumbly' sound headin' their way... GREATEST SOUND? 2nd gear, about 3200-3500 rpm (about 25-30 mph) ...then let off on the gas and let her purr...EVERYONE turns their head to see what is making that FABULOUS SOUND!!! Best Bonus? You get to pick out whatever exhaust tips you want (SSS is muffler only)...stock...Borla...dualies...I chose double walled, tapered, angle tips... Happy Hunting!!! |

I've tried seven or eight mufflers and the Borla is back on my car now. I really like the galss pack sound but without catalytic convertors, the sound is TOOOOOO loud. |

Everyone thinks theirs sounds the best. You have to decide what you want to hear every day. The baffles are definitely out of your tips. You can plainly see that in the picture. Straight pipes without the baffles would probably be too harsh, according to everyone who has tried that. I have never heard that sound, personally. |

I guess this is as good a place as any to ask a question about stock tips... I took a ride in Jim R.'s car a little while back and thought his car with stock exhaust sounded different than my 97 stock exhaust. I think he has a 2000. Anyway, on Rich's '02, Buckets' 01(?), and all other Kats I have seen, the baffles are about 2" from the end of the tips. But on my 97, the baffles are about 4" from the end of the tips. Is there a difference in sound (or performance) with the placement of the baffles in the tips? |

I have the baffles out of my factory tips, and with the Borla muffler, it sounds great to me. JMO Just shows to go you. You can please some of the people all the time. And you can please all the people some of the time. But, you sure as h#ll can't please all the people all the time. And the baffles come out by drilling out the rivets holding them in. Easy. |
