My guess is this is Prowler #1 off the line and was parked in the bowels of the Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills. Someone with deep roots and connections in DC (BOB) worked the deal for Mike and he has a true museum piece to compliment the LAST Prowler that rolled off the line! Am I close in my guess???

In this case, the VIN number does count because it's the lowest VIN of any 97 Prowler ever made.

WOW! Congratulations Mike!

Eaton's legacy: Ex-Chrysler chief failed to deliver a merger of equals

Charles V. Tines / The Detroit News

At the time of the merger announcement, Robert Eaton sold the deal as a marriage of equals. The promised benefits have been deferred.

By Jon Pepper / The Detroit News

The legacy of Bob Eaton today is not very pretty: the once-vibrant Chrysler Corp. over which he presided is now the diminished subsidiary of a German holding company.
Workers criticize Eaton for selling out. Fellow Chrysler executives complain that he never understood the guts of the car business and that he failed to defend his old company's turf. Even the investors with whom he held so much sway bailed out of his ballyhooed merger with Daimler-Benz AG once they began to see that the promised benefits would be deferred, at best.
And while it seems easy now to see how he might have done things differently, the record will show that few criticized him two years ago when he agreed to let his company be purchased. The workers' principal union, the UAW, bought the plan. Eaton's fellow executives agreed that he had made the tough call that they might not have been able to make. Wall Street hailed the combined company for having all those elusive "synergies" that management loves so well.
Of course, all were promised a package that Eaton could not deliver: a "merger of equals" that would distill the best elements of each company. The idea was to take the creativity, profitability and resourcefulness of Chrysler and blend it with the engineering, brand appeal and global reach of Mercedes-Benz. It was to be one big, happy and powerful family.
Consumers could see for themselves how far this dream was from realization at last week's North American International Auto Show. While General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. herded all their global brands into their own corners under their corporate banner, Chrysler cars and trucks were a long way -- geographically and psychologically -- from the glitzy Mercedes exhibit, which was situated with other German carmakers.
That distance between the two entities also was seen with the departure of Chrysler president Tom Stallkamp last fall. Stallkamp had mistakenly believed that a real merger of functions was intended. He found out the hard way that Chrysler was simply being folded into the wide-ranging portfolio of the old Daimler-Benz.
Eaton seemed to believe in the idea of a merger, too. He touted endlessly his good relations with co-chairman Juergen Schrempp, the few areas of integration that actually worked and the future prospects of the combined companies.
In Eaton's defense, it should be remembered that he made the deal based on a sensible appraisal of the world automotive market. His company was strictly a regional player in a glutted global marketplace. A downturn in the economies of Chrysler's prime markets in the United States and Canada could have marginalized the company and made it difficult to strike a deal on its own terms.
There are people who believe that Chrysler might have won a more favorable bargain with BMW or Fiat. Whether he could have made a better deal at another time, or with another company, however, may never be known.
The widespread sense that he oversold Chrysler's deal with Daimler-Benz will be remembered in Detroit for a long time to come. What may not be recalled is that it was Eaton who ensured that Chrysler would not endure another near-death experience in the next North American downturn, as it had in the previous two.
Eaton's resignation is, for the old Chrysler Corp., its last breath. Long live the Chrysler division, a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG, Stuttgart, Germany.
