Ok.... maybe it had something to do with me going over to the Ex's house... But as soon as I pulled in her driveway I hear this loud whineing sound from under the hood... Check the gauges out and the voltage is low.... like 11! Crap I thought there goes the alternator. I look under the hood and yep it's loud alright. I shut it down. Restart check things and still there. I call the chrysler towing up... on the phone with them.... not good news.. they will only tow it to the dealer. Being nearly 10pm.. I know that means it'll be left outside. No thanks. I decide to try to make it home under battery only power... 27 miles and it's night, but it's mostly highway. So off I go... I get no more then 1 mile from the Ex's house and suddenly the noise goes away and the gauge goes back up to the usual 13.5-14. I drove it home... drove it all day today.. no problems. I did call the dealer this morning... you know where that got me... they said they couldnt just replace the alternator because that might not be the problem... so... They say to drive it until it does it again... goody... I am going to drive it here locally this week then bring it in either way next week..... But crazy stuff huh...
I guess I better stay away from my Ex huh...LOL

Okay Frank I had the same thing happen on a S-10 Blazer they said drive it until it does it and bring it in, well a couple days later and far from home it started I went no more than 30 miles and from what I can tell the bearings in the Alternator went bad shorted out the armature against the housing and started my wiring harness a BLAZE! it burned the wiring from one end of the truck to the other. I had to fight GM for 2 months to cover the repairs as they said it was neglect, so if they say drive it make them put it in writing.

Man you're brave driving your Prowler to your ex's house!!! That would scare the bajeebees out of me. Can you image the damage she could do if you irritated her. I'm assuming your ex is like mine... Maybe she put a curse on your car!

Frank - are you out of your mind? Never, never drive that cat over to a ex wife's place. There might be some hidden anger that she might take out on the car, lol. I can only hope that we never have to tell you,,,,we told you so.

Ok... she's my Ex-girlfriend.... we dated 5 years. We are good friends, but this is the second time an alternator has gone out at her house since we broke up 6 months ago! My Mustang blew it's alternator about 3 months ago in her driveway too!!!! Wierd huh. I guess I dont learn huh...LOL

Last night the alternator finally check out totally. I barely made it home.... the car only had 3rd gear and very dim headlights the last 2 miles or so!! But It did make it. Had to have the Kat towed in.... Wasnt a happy site seeing it up on the flatbed..... But with luck I will get it back before the weekend. Take care all...

Frank, Most of the time when a alternator is going bad like that it is the bearings that you here. They are not allowing the shaft to spin at the normal RPM so the amps drop and the bearings are the sound that you heard. Normaly when they cool they will sometimes spin normal again, FOR A WHILE, but when they go it can be very disasterous. Pay if you have to and get it replaced now. Kind of feel like it is a sign from god. They normaly go out completely when you least want it to happen. You know the old saying.... pay now or pay out your a$$ later!

Remember the days when it was a brass bushing in the rear instead of ball-bearings?
