I found out yesterday my Norton anti virus is not functioning. I have had some strange e mailed saying mail could not be delivered. Looks like my computer might be infected.

I will pull the plug while I try and get "Norton" to come back to work.

sorry if I have caused any problems. I'm a computer dummy and not sure what to do right now but to warn you all.

I have deleted all addresses from my computer......I had
!000wormalert@you.com as my 1st address and will put it back into my address book

Thanks for all the advice. Will check out Panda when finished here

Larry, there is a lot of that going on and the delivery notice was probably not sent by you anyway. No worries. I think we are all getting used to the viruses, spam, and scams.

Larry, I am getting the same messages. They are attaching to other computers and using those mailboxes, similar to last year.

Suggestion--go to Panda softwear.com and download the free scan. It cleared out the mydoom worm from my system. Another good free scan is at trend micro. What one wont get, the other usually will.
Lots of crap floating around out there but it's supposed to terminate itself the middle of this month. Gates has a $500,000. bounty out on the originator of the mydoom worm.

CT you pick-up what from this site? A virus? If that's what you're saying then I don't think so!

It's transmitted by e-mails. I took everyone out of my address book until this blows over so I wont spread it.

CT it's highly unlikely and close to impossible to get a virus from just roaming this site. You may want to check other sources.

Here is an email exchange with my mom on how to stop the spread from your computer...

i think a while back you sent me an email about how to stop a worm virus by putting a certain address in your address book. something like 00000@000.com or something like that. if you have it still, can you re-send it to me please?

I am showing: Name: 1000 - Address: WormAlert
I don't remember anymore where I got this from, but if you put it at the top of your address book, it is supposed to keep a worm from going to the addresses below it. I guess because the address is not valid, somehow it hangs up there and doesn't go any further. At least that is the way I understood it.

There are other variations of doing this but I can't remember for sure what they are. I am thinking that adding the email address AAAAA@AAAAA.com or 00000@00000.com to your address book will also stop the spread. These solutions won't keep you from getting a virus, only stopping its spread from your computer.

WildCat - I have gotten the same email you speak of, telling me my emails were returned (when I hadn't sent any). It goes on to speak of a virus being in those emails I allegedly sent out that were returned... THIS email is the email with the virus. If you have an inbox folder on your computer, (as opposed to your email box inbox folder), you can go in there via Windows Explorer to read these questionable emails before opening them, and if they are questionable, delete them from your system from in there. I have no names at all in my address book so that too is another solution. I always find an incoming email and get the address from that. You can also create a text file listing your email addresses, and copy and paste them to your emails from that.

I know the pain! Saturday I scanned everything, came up with nothing, deleted tons of old stuff and emptyed my address book scanned again, came up with nothing. Today I come in and I had 11 e-mail returned notices and the funny part one of them was from myself? also I checked the other returned ones address and they are not anyone that was in my address book or anyone that has e-mailed me in the last 30 days? I also recieved 2 notices from people I do not know that they recieved a virus form me? but the original senders address was not me? So before I posted this I deleted and scanned everything again and still came up with nothing? I guess I will have to see what tommorow brings.

Bob--I scanned with my normal virus control, V-Com, and it located the worm, but couldn't remove it. V-Com then sent me to trend micro scan and that found the worm and removed it. I thought it was out and the got the virus warning again. I used panda and that found something else and now I seem clean.

well I used the Panda software and it found one and disinfected it. I would say this had been there awhile and good old Norton had it in quarratine. But since Norton has taken some time off I hope it is gone for now.

I have deleted all addresses out of my address Book and will put as only address as !000wormalert@you.com

THANKS EVERYONE

FYI: If you have Windows. Go to start, then click your "find" or "search" option
In the folder option, type the name jdbgum
Search your C drive and all subfolders
Click "find now"
The virus has a Teddy Bear Icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe. DO NOT OPEN IT!
Go to edit (on the menu bar) and choose "select all" to highlight the file without opening it
Now go to the File (on the menu bar) and select delete
The virus will then go into the recycle bin.

This virus is not detected by McAfee or Norton
I don't know if this is the worm everyone is talking about but this one sits idle for about 14 days before damaging the system. A friend of mine who is computer savvy sent me this and viola there was the little bugger waiting to infect.
Hope this helps everyone

This is also not a REAL virus. It is a spoof. DO NOT DO WHAT INDY IS SUGGESTING. Again I repeat this is not a VIRUS. It should be on every machine running windows.

The JDBGMBR hoax tells the user to delete a file on their computer because it is a previously unknown virus. It is one of the most widely distributed hoaxes.

If you receive such a message do not delete the file from your system.
If you are worried, scan the file to check it for viruses.
If you receive a copy of JDBGMGR.EXE via email, delete it as you would any other unsolicited attachment.
JDBGMGR.EXE is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java. The program uses an icon of a grey teddybear. It is usually found in one or more places among the Windows system files. Some versions of the hoax misreport the name of this file as JDBMGR.EXE or JBDGMGR.EXE.

The JDBGMGR.EXE file is no more susceptible than any other to being infected by a virus.

Some versions of the hoax mistakenly claim that deleting the file JDBGMGR.EXE is a solution to the W32/Bugbear-A worm. This misconception has almost certainly come about because JDBGMGR.EXE has an icon of a small grey teddybear.

Note: The W32/Magistr-A virus may infect the file JDBGMGR.EXE and attach it to emails (this is unconnected with the hoax). Sophos recommends users delete the file if they ever receive it as an email attachment.

This hoax is very similar to the SULFNBK hoax. It has been reported in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, German, Polish, Danish and other languages.

Here is the text of the hoax in English:

I found the little bear in my machine because of that I am sending this message in order for you to find it in your machine. The procedure is very simple:

The objective of this e-mail is to warn all Hotmail users about a new virus that is spreading by MSN Messenger. The name of this virus is jdbgmgr.exe and it is sent automatically by the Messenger and by the address book too. The virus is not detected by McAfee or Norton and it stays quiet for 14 days before damaging the system.
The virus can be cleaned before it deletes the files from your system. In order to eliminate it, it is just necessary to do the following steps:
1. Go to Start, click "Search"
2.- In the "Files or Folders option" write the name jdbgmgr.exe
3.- Be sure that you are searching in the drive "C"
4.- Click "find now"
5.- If the virus is there (it has a little bear-like icon with the name of jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT FOR ANY REASON
6.- Right click and delete it (it will go to the Recycle bin)
7.- Go to the recycle bin and delete it or empty the recycle bin.

IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS IN ALL OF YOUR SYSTEMS SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS LOCATED IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK BEFORE IT CAN CAUSE ANY DAMAGE.

Important
Many virus hoaxes:

falsely claim to describe an extremely dangerous virus
use pseudo-technical language to make impressive-sounding (but impossible) claims
falsely claim that the report was issued or confirmed by a well-known company
ask you to forward it to all your friends and colleagues
As usual, you are urged not to pass on warnings of this kind, as the continued re-forwarding of these hoaxes simply wastes time and email bandwidth.

It is possible that you may receive a hoax via email with a file attached. Obviously, such file attachments should be treated with caution as they may be virus infected. Sophos recommends deleting virus hoax emails, whether they contain file attachments or not.

Sophos suggests a policy to help prevent hoaxes from spreading in your company.
