Traveling the other day through a nice small germany town and wham. Some 70 year old fails to yield and takes off my rear end. He it the driver door and kept doing into the rear tire. Now the driver rear tire is facing about 15 degrees off of straight. Repair shop looking at it but it doesn't look good. Bent frame, broken welds, a ton of body damage. Insurance works weird over here. no pain and suffering. now for my question: For those of you with experiance, should I fight to have the insurance total the car and start over, or if they can fix it let them? What kind of figures am i looking at for lost value even if they fix it perfectly? What can I claim if they do total it? Just what I owe, what mine costs new, or what replacment would be? Luckily my wife and I were fine for the most part and the police say it is clear as day that it is 100% his fault. Thanks, Dennis ------------------ Only mod: (So Far) Front Mud Flaps |

Sorry to hear about the accident. Based on your description, I would be very leery especially about the frame damage, and that's not something you can fix. I would have it inspected thoroughly. If it can be proved there is frame damage, I would insist they total it, write a check and buy a new one. I would be looking at what you paid for it and what a new replacement would be. If you need help locating a new gold Prowler, I have the list of where all remaining new Prowlers are located. You can contact me through my email. Am so glad that you and your wife were okay. |

Sorry to hear about your Kat getting crunched. Glad everyonre is OK. Sounds like a total to me. On my Prowler finance loan I have something called GAP Insurance. If the insurance company doesn't covered what is owed this will make yp the diffrence. I doubt in the insurance comapny will give you more than book value or the replacment cost. Like others have posted, glad you are Ok but sorry about the Prowler! I would suspect frame damage means a total. I hope things work out with the insurance company. Must be really cool driving a Prowler in Europe? |

Sounds like more damage than Gary C. had and with his frame replacement I heard they had somewhere around 36K in repairs when all was said and done My guess they will total it. As far as insurance paying, I would think they should replace it, but they do not like to pay more than they have to, so hope you come out OK on it. I ask for replacement value on my insurance when I bought the car, if you have this on yours then maybe your insurance might have to fight their company. Glad to heard you and your wife is OK ------------------ |

You must have frame damage and from what's been said here about Prowler frames, I most certainly would try and get the thing totaled and buy another. JRL |

Frame damage does not necessarily equate to a totaled car. I know because I've had two cars broadsided that damaged and bent the frame. Both times, the other party was ticketed and at fault. In one case, arrested for being drunk. In both cases, they used a frame puller set-up to pull it back into shape. No, they never road the same again nor looked the same but, insurance companies don't care about that. I think in most states to total a car, the damage has to be equal to or greater then 75% of the replacement cost. Knowing this, body shops will always low bid to be way under that 75% rule. Why? Because they don't get the business if the car is totaled. If not, they can do the repair work and then add more to the cost later. Once into the repairs, the insurance companies will cough up more cash to get it all done. In other words, your car can actually have 85% damage to it and they will pay for it so long as it initially was reported as less then the 75% rule. |

YF. The big question about this frame debate is: can normal frame straigtening procedures be applied to an aluminum frame? Also kepp in mind he has many broken welds. Remember the weld issues on some e 99's. Chrysler chose to replace the cars rather than trying to fix them. There nust have been a reason for this. |

Sorry to hear about your Prowler. But glad to hear that you and your wife are fine. When you did drive on the Autobahn how fast did you get your Prowler going? I know if I would have had my Prowler there in Germany when I was stationed there, I would have seen what she could do on the Autobahn. |

Buck, You have a private message....... Pay no attention to YF. This is just another case of him sticking his nose in something he knows NOTHING about. Or his knowledge is LIMITED from his TWO experiances. If you need an expert, ask fixumm or myself. We handle this stuff on a daily basis.... Koz |

quote: I completely agree with you but, I see cars all the time I'd consider totaled getting fixed. Just cause Chrysler did what was right doesn't mean Bob's fixit shop or the local dealer will. Remember, if it's a total, to them there is no money in it. What's eatten you koz? Don't like someone trying to help a guy with a wrecked car out? Ultimately it's up to him what to decide, I'm just offering incite as to making sure he doesn't take the person writing the estimate as defacto. |

First of all you guys are OK, Wildcat was right, 36,000.00 US Dollars, would I do it if I had a stock Prowler, no, total it and get a fresh one, would I do it again with the one that I had over 70k in, I don't know, I am still at least 10K away from the car being better than new. Which will come out of my pocket....... Please keep of informed and I hope DC knows that Alcoa has some frames sitting there like they didn't when I was trying to get one. ------------------ |

Thanks for the back up fixumm YF....no big deal.....several times you voice YOUR experiances as being the CORRECT and ONLY one. Not true! There are no two circumstances or accidents the same. There are a WHOLE LOT OF FACTORS involved in each case. Its not so cut and dry as you put it. Think before you speak....it could save your face! Im somewhat of and expert in the collision/auto insurance field.....its my JOB!! |
