I'm not talking about the dollar amount PAID. I'm talking about determining the dollar amount TO PAY.

Sometimes your insurance company adjuster looks at it. Sometime the other company adjuster looks at it. Sometimes they hire outside folks if it's in a rural area. Sometimes they rely on the body shop for an estimate.

Now if the body shop says it's a total, exacly how much money do they stand to make on the deal???? Zip.

But, if they say it's fixable and well below the total limit, then the insurance company will pay the tab to them. Once into the project, they can continue to up the limit (the body shop) till it far exceeds the amount to qualify as a totaled car.
