Connecticut Motor Vehicle says that by the end of November 2002 we have to have 2 license plates on motor vehicles. The dealer said no one would bother us with our Prowler as it is a specialty car and a front license plate would ruin the looks of the cat. I agree but the fine is $80 and the weirdos at the DMV say yes to everyone for 2 plates. Any opinions, suggestions or what ?? Thanks in advance. Ohio has required two plates for years. No one has ever said a word to me about the front plate but you could always get stopped by a cop that wants everything by the book and get a ticket.
You are taking a chance by not having a front plate, but not much of a chance, in my opinion. Do what you are comfortable with doing.

I guess it depends on how well they enforce it.
Texas requires two plates but, I have owned about 20 toy cars and refused to put plates on the front of any of them.

I guess you could always carry it in the trunk. Attach it to a broken bracket of some sort and claim it just fell off, if stopped and questioned about it.

Don't put the plate on until someone says something. the most you can get is a warning the first time, and all you have to do is say the mounting bracket is backordered, etc.... Keep the plate behind the pass. seat in case.

MD requires 2 plates and (knocks wood) noone bothers me. The police look at it and just try to figure out what it is. Besides, they have to look at both the back to determine that it is an in-state tag and THEN the front to see if there is a plate on the front. Too much trouble for most.

Like Yellow said, Texas requires two and mine came with the front one attached, so it would leave holes if I took it off.

When I had the Vette, I never put one on and got stopped about four times! (no tickets, though - professional courtesy!)

And I guess I'm supposed to set an example, but I've never stopped anyone for not having a front License Plate.

My friend has a Trans Am (red) and he has been stopped 7 times for no plate in front. Vettes will get hassled too.

I really think Prowlers get a pass! Just too cool to bother.

I have been ticketed twice in my Vette for no front plate, once in the Insight and never in the Prowler. If you do get a ticket (this is where the cop from Texas should stop reading! ) take some tape or white string, attach the front plate, take a picture and take the picture with you to court. Every ticket I have gotten for no plate has been dismissed when I went to court. Of course none of the tickets I've had for no plate were the reason I got stopped, they have been side effects to go with my speeding tickets!

I live in Wyoming and they are very strict about the front license plate being on. Before I sold my late husbands Inca Gold he designed a metal backed bracket with a way to bolt it onto the back of the bumper using a zero clearance tool of some sort. So we never had to place any holes anywhere and it worked just fine. Mike said when he purchased it took some time to get it off, but once off it was like it was never there. Just an option. Good Luck.

M&C: I had a plate on the front of my prowler which the dealership put on before delivery right into my bumper. I have since taken the bumpers off and will not put a plate back on and have never been cited for it or hassled. In fact several of our friends who are officers stop and talk to me while I'm out in the prowler and haven't even mentioned it. You can go to Home Depot and pick up little "L" shaped brackets that work in the little slits on the bottom side of the bumper that you can then bolt your plate too if you feel the need to have a plate on or check out the vendor page on the home page and get Bob Goetz's license plate frame at Real Rod which hooks to the frame on the front and will not harm the prowler at all. For anyone wanting to plug the holes left by their plate attachment to the bumper you can also get the little plugs at Home Depot that match the bumper color perfectly. Good luck with whatever you chose. Tami

We are required to have plates on both front and back.I've never had one on the front and in 2 years have never ran into a problem(knock on wood),but I guess if a cop really wanted to give you a hard time he could. I like the idea of having a front plate with you but not attached on the car.

Sometimes I think getting stopped depends on how you act and drive, not the kind of car or if it is legal.
I had a 60 chevy when I was 17 with a blown 678 sticking out the hood 12", illegal fender well headers, 24" wide tires that stuck out the fender a good 7", and a parachute (filled with rags) where the license plate was suppose to be and no braketag. Drove the car like this for just over a year. Of course I drove perfectly no racing the motor,no pealing out etc.
The day I put the car back legal to sell it, stock motor, pipes, tires, license plate I took it for one last drive.
Two tickets. Forgot about the braketag and didn't completely stop for a stop sign.Something before I would have never done.
They were always to busy looking at the car to realize how ilegal it was.
I think you will be find with one plate, just don't give them a reason to want to stop you. JMO http://meand 60 chevy.jpg

Tami - I'm going to check that out on the plug thing at Home Depot. I would rather not have the plate there, seeing some of ya'll without them.

Heaven forbid I would break the law!

TL: There were two different sizes that I used - one smaller than the other, but after they were in and I polished up the bumper you couldn't tell unless you got right up to it. I think they are like 6 and 8 cents apiece. Tami

You don't need a front plate CJ - your kats are garaged 9 months out of the year

We have a front plate law here and it is enforced. I don't have front plates on any of my vehicles though and have never been stopped (knock on wood). I just keep telling myself - "it's only a matter of time."

We are supposed to have a front plate here in Cali. I don't know of one Prowler with one on here and only seen one Kat get a ticket for this, ever. It is all up to the cop. But, it boils down to, don't give them a chance to pull you over and you'll probably be ok. I drove 100 plus thousand miles, dozens of tickets, and finally, ONE no front license ticket on a beat up, and I mean BEAT UP 69 chevy pick up I had years ago.

Here in Iowa the law says two plates unless the car is not designed to have a front plate. If stopped, just tell them it is not designed to have a front plate and if they disagree, ask them where it's supposed to be mounted. There is no visible mounting location, but carry your extra plate with you.

I have heard that if you park in San Francisco the Parking Weenies (and Weenets) will ticket you for no front plate, so don't go there. The sales guy that I bought my cat from told me that even CHP who buy cars from him ask (like I did) that no holes be drilled for the front plate brackets. Of course if they get stopped, their Chips card is "stuck" to their D licence. I keep my "extra" plate under the rear one. In California it's a "fixit" ticket that I think now costs ~80 bucks, used to be free, just fix it. Now Calif needs the money for electric rebates. ~bg

Been driving my cat for over 5 years now without a front plate and have never been stopped. The '97s did not come with any mounting for a front plate and no "drilling" took place. I just keep the plate in the trunk.

M&C,
In Illinois you are required to have two plates also. I never have put the front plate on, in fact I have the front plate on my trailer, the trailer plate is just some numbers, you can't get vanity trailer plates, so I got the trailer plate and keep it in the trailer. On my Bonneville SSEi I have never had a front plate, and I am on my second Bonneville. It's a matter of the cop's attitude.
Bob
