Jkburns response to the “Who’s in your driver’s seat” thread got me thinking about this. He described a customer that was interested in a cat but the dealer asked him if the prospect could drive HIS cat. Very strange to me.

For me, I can remember pulling up three dealerships in Indy (home of the fixed F1 races) that had cats off the web. None of them would let me test drive. I finally decided on the Mulholland and found two dealerships to pit against each other. I worked through the negotiations with each on the contingency that if I didn’t like the test drive, I could break the deal. Finally, after putting my money down, I got to test drive the cat. I still remember driving by a kids baseball field and watching almost every kid stopping to watch us (the salesman) go buy.

So what was you experience?

In November of 1999, you didn't get to drive them. You were lucky to find one! Decided that wouldn't be a problem, as if I didn't like it I could take to LA area and sell for $30K more than I paid for it.

Local dealer here has only had one Kat at the dealership. A '99 back in '99. So I had to go out of town for mine. Had a lot of offers from dealers to test drive, but no one was close enough so I just settled on the price with a dealer and went a picked it up and drove her home.

On my second trip to the dealer to look at the car I was given the opportunity to take it for a test drive around the block with the salesman as a passenger. Scared me to death. But being the good salesman he was, he knew that if he let me drive it, he had me hook, line, and sinker.

Summer 01- Checked daily for a Prowler on the Internet everywhere! No luck too high in price

August 01- Found this website

Sept 3 01 Saw mine on autotrader for a great price. low 30's
Called the dealer out in Columbus Ohio.
Had him send me pictures!!

Was a import dealer, a guy Traded it in for a new Jag. They had no clue about it!

A fellow Prowler owner from this site Jeff (who I met online) actually went to the Dealership (Non Chrysler) and did a full inspection of the car for me. Called me back said its a beauty and I should come get it!

Sept 11th hit!! Stock market closed no flights!! Damn my money is on lock down!!

First day the market reopened- sold some mutual funds and some J&J stock. (before the market plunged again)

Got the money! Called the dealer and gave him a credit card deposit.

Flew from Philly to Columbus Ohio 1 week later with a check in hand!!

Met Jeff from Prowleronline at the Airport, Picked me up in his Purple Kat and took me to the dealer. Wow!!

That's when I drove it. A bit scared at first but after driving around Columbus and getting nothing but cheers I feel in love with the thing. Gave the dealer my 32K and left a happy man!

Then it was 400 miles (i think) but it was so fun I don't even remember how long of my first ride from Ohio to Philly!

Great story, great car, great people on this website

My salesman met me at the door with the keys to Blue Kat in his hands. He took my son inside and bought him a Coke and told me and my wife to take it for a spin. Then he bought my wife a Coke and let my son ride with me. Great salesman (one of the few), but I guess he thought I might buy it. I guess he was right . . .

BTW, he had it washed before I took it out on the test!

TreyB,

Cool story. how many miles did you cat have on it when you got it?

Blue Kat,

Your salesman didn't sound that good to me. It sounded like he stiffed you a coke!

I had made a "prior arrangement" for my yellow kat. It was delivered at the dealer on Monday July 13, 1998. After dealer prep, they put it in the showroom and I picked it up at 2:30 in the afternoon on Tuesday July 14. I got my test drive as I drove it out of the showroom and home.

Hmmm about a year ago... My dad bought a silver 2001 prowler and I visited my parents for the weekend and drove that car everywhere... Fell in Love with it... Then little over a month ago, I found one near me for a good price, I showed up, and immediatly offered a test drive... 30 minutes later I was driving home in it...

My parents have a silver 2001
My uncle has a Midnight blue 2001
I have a Midnight blue 2001

It seems to run in the family

First Kat I bought, I just stopped in the dealership and they had a new 99 Black Kat(Dec 98)....I had been looking at other cars and had actually decided on a new red Vette conv that day for my wife for X-mas....they priced me the Kat at MSRP, I bought it and had it driven to my daughters house to hide for a few days....I didn't drive it till Xmas day...PS, my wife hated it and it turned out to be my car.....next Kat(2000 Yelo) was bought in Va with no test drive, I knew what they were at that point...I just drove there from Indiana, paid for it and drove back home(800 miles)...bought Kat #3 at a dealership 20 miles from my house and drove it home(only Kat I ever owned that would smoke the tires at will)again, no test drive...Bought Kat #4 in Va also and drove it home, another 800 mile test drive.....never had a test drive in any of these Kats....the next 4 Kats were all delivered by Woodhouse Chrysler, Blaire, Ne. to my door step....

I test drove a 99 purple here in town but it had a lot of miles and they wanted a lot of money for it. After another month of looking i found my 99 yellow in Maryland. I flew up and got and drove it home all within like a week. The first time i drove it was off the lot. it was like 45 degrees out that night after i signed all the papers. but it was warm enough for the top down. lol. on the way home it was snowing alittle. and the top was down. but it was fun.

On Sat of Labor Day weekend Sept of 01, my wife and I where having lunch after looking a '64 Chevelle SS convertible to restore, she did not like the idea, she asked me if we could test drive a Prowler, so we went to a dealer who had 2 Mulhollands we asked to take one out, they copied my license and we where off, Colleen did not like the dark blue, no contrast in the interior. So we took it back and said thanks. We then said what about the Red one in Richmond so off we went to Richmond Auto Sales to drive the Red one,we got there about 3:00 PM and asked if we could drive the Red Prowler, he also had a silver, he said sure so he copied my license and away we went for about a 5 mile drive, we got back to the dealer about 3:50 PM, they where closing at 4:00 PM, I asked Colleen if she wanted to drive it, she said sure, but they where only open for 10 more minutes, I went and asked Ron, the owner, if Colleen could drive it, he said sure go ahead. So off we went on the same route, Colleen said this car is great, I want this car. We got back to the dealer, and thanked him, we will think about it. The rest of he weekend all we could talk about was the Red Prowler with less than 150 miles on it.
We decided I would be there Tues morning first thing and buy the Red Prowler and we have loved his car ever since.
Now a year later and 13,000 miles we still love this car.

In August of 1998, I was working at our Plymouth Prowler roadshow display (my former job) at the Woodward Dream Cruise. Jerry Scholten and some of the engineers were giving spectators rides in a Prowler down Woodward and he gave me my first ride. I never got to test drive one (although I'd been around them a lot). The first time I drove one was when RPL presented me with my Black Cat at Chrysler headquarters (a total surprise for our anniversary) and I had to drive it home!!

In 94 I visited my dealer to let him know when he got a Prowler I wanted my name put on it ... he said a what? I described the car and he then knew what I was talking about but, said he didn't think he would ever get one if they were even built. My wife then let him know that it was her name not mine that was to go on it. The dealer and I agreed that if he got one he would sell it to me at sticker.

In 96 we visited the Conner Ave. plant ... it only had the first 3 stations in the line done ... and we got to sit in one of the proto's.

Waited for my dealer to get one ... Oct 99 while Tammy was in the hospital we got the call our Cat was being built. A couple of days later it was delivered and we closed the deal. My dealer sold it at sticker and gave me the cover at no charge and a large box of promo stuff he had been putting back since 94. I'll put "my" dealer up against any "5 Star" dealer.

Right after delivery we went to Mexico for treatment for Tammy ... She got to ride in it but never got to drive it.

So, my test ride has a love story to go with it.

I ordered mine on Feb16/96 my daughter b-day, it finally came in on April 19/99 I didn't have to wait to long LOL.
I took it for a drive as soon as I got to the dealership,
I figured I'd waited long enough for my test drive

Drove a cat in Michigan back in '96. Got to drive my cat the first time when it was delivered in 11/97 at the Dallas Hard Rock Cafe. There was a big media presentation/party as the first 7 cats in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area (maybe Texas) were given to their new owners. My car has never seen a dealer lot or showroom. It went straight from the factory to me. They shipped the cars from Michigan to Dallas in enclosed trucks

In getting a rare '97, a test drive of the car I was getting really wasn't necessary or important.

I bought mine over the phone. I had never even seen a RED one and did not know they made RED Prowlers until I saw a picture on the internet. I picked it up the following day, half way between Indianapolis and Chicago. When we arrived everyone in the dealership was out in the showroom. I paid for it and then drove it home. (I did not even know if I would fit inside it and my oldest son said he did not think I would fit and the door only opens half way.) That was early in April, 1999.
That was the first time I was ever inside a Prowler. It had 3 miles on it, I think. I now have close to 28,000.

Yes, a strange story about my dealer asking if a customer could test drive MY Kat, but knowing this was a long term investment, I figured anything to enhance my relationship with the dealership would be to my advantage. So far, I've been right.

I never test drove a Prowler before owning one. In fact, I had only seen a Mulholland and a Candy Red close up. Bought the car sight unseen and didn't drive it until it was unloaded at the dealership.

The Inca Gold was much richer looking in person than in photos, and the contrast with the black trim and chrome wheels is amazing!
