I've had my cat for over a month now, and I have YET to scrape my nose (Even though the previous owner took care of that in the measly 200 miles HE put on it)..... I regularly park with the nose less than 2 inches from the curb with no error EVERY time. Here is the trick if you don't know it: In EVERY car I have ever owned, you "sight" at the bottom of your driver side-view mirror. When you pull up to the curb, as soon as you see the curb visually appear out from under the base (bottom) of your side-view mirror, you are less than a foot away from the curb. Once you get a feel for how the curb line matches up with the bottom of your side-view mirror, you will know the exact distance your nose is from the curb. Sight your mirror and get out of the car to see where it is in relation to the curb. You can then fine-tune your parking skills and impress da ladies as you regularly park 2 inches from the curb time and time again. My trick for backing up in an end spot it to take the side view mirror, and point it all the way down to the ground. then I can see my tire, and exactly how far it is from the side of the end-curb without even turning my head around. Also a fool-proof trick. BTW: It does not matter how your seat is adjusted or your height....This rule works every time in every vehicle I have ever driven. Try it if you have never used this trick! I hope maybe this helped..... |

BT 161... That is quite a tip... I've never heard that or tried it before... I usually try and find a place with glass in front so I can watch me pull up... I think I'll go out & try that right now... bottom side of side mirrors... OK... ------------------ |

BT161. Well, I went out to try it... Not quite as easy as I thought... It takes a lil practice... But, seems like it'll work once you practice... base means = where mirror attaches to door... |

I went 15,000 miles without scraping the nose until two weeks ago. I was pulling into a gas station and the ramp into the parking lot was very steep. I did not take it at an angle but drove straight at it (left turn)...scraped the nose on the way up This message has been edited by lavka on 08-26-2002 at 10:18 PM |

Laddie....I apologize for not being clear. I am specifically referring to just under the MIRROR part. NOT where it meets the door. Look for the curb to appear just under the mirror itself. That may be where the problem occurred when you tried it. Lavka and Onaprowl. I have to back out of my driveway, or else the front flaps will scrape. Tons of clearance when you back out. I don't even have to angle the car! The nose clears fine. Howlercat....I will be sure to notify you IF I ever scrape.. But don't hold yer breath! I got this down cold..... |

quote: Here is my solution: I have my wife stand on the edge of the curb and when the front of the Kat hits her in the knees, she screams and then I know I have pulled up far enough and have not hurt the kat!. . . By the way, I tried your idea and I need to know how this works when there is a car parked to the left of where you are planning on parking, how do you see the curb? I tried your method and I guess the combination of being short and sitting with the seat leaned WAY back leaves me over two feet short of curb. I believe that is better than two feet over the curb, though! |

Marty.......if your seating position is....(prone with feet on dash?!? ) I would suggest to get your car parked perfectly and get abck in and find a sight point on your car that matches up with the curb. It doesn't have to be a side mirror. I have a mark on my garage wall that when I pull in, my head is even with the mark on the wall. Pumpkin......If the mirror works for you, you can use either side to sight with. |

BT161 - I think the concept of using the mirror or something else that works for one's own siteline as a guide is a good suggetion. It sure beats my method of pulling in to a parking space until I hear a "thud" |

And here, all along, I just thought you were either a skillful driver, or just lucky. Now I am not as impressed with your parking; however, thanks for the lesson. I will try it. Jerry |

Well here's a problem. I've never scraped my nose parking. Unfortunately I did scrape it recently because of a rediculous hill I was on at Toyota of Carlsbad. The parking lot hill is like a 90 deg. angle. Anyway I was coming down it and tried to angle my car when the flat part came up so it wouldn't scrape. STILL snagged on the ground and left some nice scrapes under the nose. I was very very mad. That driveway is a hazard and I don't ever recommend going there. |

amcamahon.....We have a McDonald's that has a repaved entrance that looks so steep, I wouldn't chance it. I don't even see how normal cars clear this cliff they made. Yellowfever: As I restated, you can first get a perfect park with your car and get back in and find your own sight of reference point to the curb that will work best for you......As for impressing the ladies, I don't know how many smiley faces I needed to show that was a joke! My wife was impressed though.... |
