All,

I am going to thoroughly research the re-chroming of the 300M Shift knobs, Chroming of the outside Door Handles and the Stock Grill. I know that all this was previously accomplished and there is much history here. Some good, some bad. If you have a current business that you have used with success on any of these pieces, the 300M Chrome Shifter Insert, the outside Door Handles and the Factory Painted Grill, please let me know here. I was unaware that the 300M chrome Shifter could be re-chromed when the chrome piece is removed. And I have no clear idea of how to remove that plastic piece without damaging it. ANY advice on any of these pieces would be much appreciated. If I find anyone willing to try this or who can do this I'll let you all know. Any advice on removing the pieces, like the insert on the shifter mentioned, how to properly remove the Door Handles, would be much appreciated as well. In discussions with Wildcat, he made it clear that there is a lot of prep work on the factory Grill (Factory Cast marks that will need to be sanded off to look right on the Prowler and not show that imperfection once chromed). But I will make an effort to see what I can come up with on getting these pieces Chromed. Any and all comments appreciated. And if there is an interest if I am successful let me know.

Thank you,

John

Not all plastic can be vacuum plated. We had to cast the grille in a different plastic to chrome it. The original was too flexible. A good vendor will know which plastic that they can work with. Lacks did the grilles for me but they only do large production runs.

I believe Larry Mayes chromed the outside door handles on his Wildcat. Maybe he will chime in.

To remove the shift knob chrome insert, heat it up a bit and pull it off. It is just on with attachment tape. It does have a couple alignment pins cast into it. When I get back I will post a picture of the underside.

As tom mentioned, the chrome insert on the Knobs comes off easily. It actually is a piece of plastic and not metal.
When I used to paint the shift knobs after removing the Insert, I would reattach the Insert onto the painted knob using Super Glue. Never had a problem with the Insert coming off.

Thanks all, I'll look into this. The Chrome 300M shifters are cool. They add a very nice little touch. The door handles, on some cars I would think would look nice. The Grills, we will see. I thought people were able to chrome the originals ?

Thank you,

John

Yes, back when these cars were much younger several individuals were able to have their stock grille's chrome plated but soon the vendors would no longer chrome them.

As I recall, chrome plating the stock grille required a great deal of preparation in order to get a quality product that would satisfy the customer.

While many were satisfied with the chromed grille's once done, there were apparently a few that were not satisfied.

My understanding was that there were enough customers that made such a big deal out of whatever perceived imperfections there may have been, that the vendors simply stopped accepting the grille's for plating.

Back then from research I did, I learned that it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500.00 for a proper plating job.

The reflection on the top of each vane showed the imperfection on the underside of the vane above. To remove and remedy that problem was time consuming. That was the begining of the end.

and that is why I had some special ones cast in more rigid plastic and vacuum plated. The one in CJ's candy car is not perfect but the imperfection is hidden with the hood closed. It has lasted 22 years. It weighs a fraction of the hard chrome stock grilles. I believe that i had a dozen made and gave them away. There might be one or two upstairs in the garage.

Yes Bob, let us know! You and I spoke about that a while back as you were describing how to properly store your car. If anyone has one let me know.

Thanks all - Larry tells me that same thing, the prep work is tedious. I will look into this. Maybe chasing a ghost but I think they look great. And what would people pay ? And thanks Tom and Buddy on the shifters. I now have 4 of them, 2 excellent, one good, one not great. I think they are worth re-doing. Have been looking on Ebay for them but to no avail. Door handles, I'll reach out to Larry.
