Since I drive my Prowler on the weekends and need to take my daughter with me, I thought the next best mod should be a car seat. Thanks to Eric Thorsen for the upholstery and Bryan Miller from Extreme Sportswear for the embroidery work.

Happy Prowl'in

Looks great! One thing tho... Children under 12 are supposed to ride in the back seat, according to my owners manual and visor sticker...

You raise an interesting issue on the Airbag. I have made a conscious choice to leave the airbag on when I drive with my 7 year old daughter in her booster seat. I have consulted a EMT (who happens to be another Prowler owner)who sees more car accidents than than I care to imagine. Despite the risk of injury from the airbag, the risk of injury without the airbag is worse and the protection provided is very valuable. BTW when I made inquires to DC on this matter, I got the quote from the owners manual that I should put her in the back seat, because it was safer.

I hope you asked the follow-up questions: Which back seat would be better? Where would they suggest mounting it? These DC guys you call/email really haven't got a clue what they're talking about when talking to people, do they? (CJ & Bob excepted.) One of these days, some fool is going to take their advice and mount a backseat on a Prowler and really hurt someone. (Of course, a rumble seat would look pretty cool! Where's that next mod thread??)

KLKschwarz,

Remember, the air bag issue is also with low impact accidents. With just enough speed, the air bag will deploy and it will injure your daughter. While the orginal impact would have had no effect. I beleive that's the real issue with the air bag and children.

I always tured mine off with the kids on board. And I even had them "check the light" before we drove. I always told them to check for the light. If they didn't see it they had authority to stop the car until the situation was corrected!

Good idea to have the kids check the light. Air bags have killed more people then they have saved. Now, there is evidence that the new "side impact" bags kill or injure rescue workers who are trying to extract crash victims who were in front/rear crashes where the side bags didn't go off. It's like a loaded shot gun is aimed at the head of the EMT who's working to save you.

Your government in action.

Do you have any links to the studies to support this comment. My discussions with EMT's is that this is not the case. As they are on the scene when these accidents happen, I tend to trust the observations of the EMT's unless I can gather better facts.

Three of my sons are Cincinnati Firefighters and are also on the ambulance at times. I will ask them if they ever heard of this occurring.

KLschwarz,

I don't think that you directed your request for proff on the subject to me, but I did find a few things.

Check out:
Here's the full link
Excerpt:
Do air bags pose a danger to children?
Yes. You should never put a child in the front seat of a car with air bags. Air bags are required because they save adult lives, but as of 1998, they had also killed at least 34 children, 10 of them infants in rear-facing seats. Even worse, some of those deaths occurred in what should have been mere fender-benders. Passenger-side air bags were required by law in all 1997-model cars and 1998-model trucks.

NTSB PDF on the subject

Obviously I already stated my opinion. Just trying to presnt these points of view to help you in your decision process. Here's hoping you never need any of this!

So... if you get into a crash, don't forget to take off your glasses first and be prepared to bleed for up to 30 min while the EMT waits for your unfired airbags to deactivate. How many race cars, airplanes, fire trucks and ambulances have you seen with air bags? Keep in mind that any stats that you see from the NTSB are from the same agency that mandated the stupid things AND they just recently reduced airbag power buy 30% AND they finally allowed a shut off switch. Is it possible that their original mandates had some errors? You bet your life! If you are using your seat belt/harness, you do not need an airbag and it just might kill you but, if you turn it off, you might be sued. Requiring helmets would do far more good but, that would mess up our hair doos.

There's no speed limit on the Autobahn and the fatality rate is lower?

Thanks for the links! This has been an ongoing discussion among my family and friends. I want to to the right thing and there are a lot of opinions on this topic. My approach has always been to collect all the information possible and then make an informed rational decision. Thanks again for all the input and links.

Right or wrong, I turn off the passenger side air bag when either of my kids ride in my prowler.

We make them ride in the back seat of our SUVs.

The autobahn does not carry nearly as many cars as any of our interstates. Traffic was very light when I was on it about 3 or 4 years ago. I was going about 100 and was getting passed by everyone, including little old ladies.
