Finally got the screen mesh in the scoop face today. So here is the pictures of the finished project. Yes, the scoops are from the Subaru WRX & STi, and are interchangeable in mounting. The STi is about 3/8" taller. I had this one painted, for a future project of creating an intercooler for the supercharger (maybe someday). Showing the screen mesh, which I mentioned in a different posting for Northern Cats engine side panel project. The filter is K/N, but the filter box is from a '02 Benz 230 Kompressor. The original box was cut & altered to fit in the small space that is available between the bottom of the hood & the top of the intake manifold. The surface area of the filter is just a touch over the stock filters. The bottom of the filter box, which shows when the hood is up - as you will see in later pic's. We removed the original Benz logo, and replaced it with a brushed aluminum piece w/ the Prowler logo etched in it. |

The altered hood w/ the hole cut in it. The bottom of the hood after the scoop was installed. The filter box & its mounting plate, mounted to the bottom hood. The heat shield was altered by cutting a hole for the filter box, and then re-seaming the cut edges so that it doesn't fray. The end of the filter box has a portion of a Prowler air tube (plastic) welded to the end, to create the turn down. A flexible rubber funnel was created to make the seal to the lower "snorkel" that runs to the throttle body. It leaks by at full throttle, so I need to make some form of a soft (compressible) gasket (donut) to help finish the seal. Any material suggestions would be appreciated. The lower "snorkel" is fabricated out of the original Prowler air tube. The elbow was cut off, turned upward & re-welded back on. The "horn" on the end is another portion of the Benz air box, welded onto the top of the turned up elbow. The stock crank case vent hose still connects to the elbow; however, the rubber hose needs to be a little taller. I'll get that replaced in the near future. A pic of the scoop mounted - taken w/ the hood open, and from the rear of the car. Notice that the lines of the scoop follow the shape of the hood. A front view pic - again, the sides & contour of the scoop follow the body lines pretty well. Also, the scoop has 3 vertical supports, which matches the 3 in the grill (w/ different spacing). A front view pic w/ the taller scoop on the hood - for comparison. I will be keeping the shorter scoop on the car, saving the other one for another day. Oh, just in case - my original hood is safely tucked away in a crate in my basement. The sucking sound from the air going into the filter is more noticeable than from the stock (under hood) location. There isn't much power difference from the MTD filter that I had on before. At least not until the engine is warm. That is when I feel a noticeable "maintained" level of get-up-and-go (seat of the pants feeling), vs. a slight loss of power due to warmer air from under the hood (or at least warmer surrounding air &/or passages). I would have made a scrapbook, but I had some difficulties w/ the brain. Can't forget to give the guy's that put in the hard labor a big THANKS - Perry Clark & Dave - from Dave's Body Shop - from way up here in Maine. Next spring - here comes some painted (ghosted) FLAMES!!! This message has been edited by SPCL-T on 10-03-2003 at 09:38 PM |

Wow, what a piece of art work! Looks like it should be there. Something I always wanted to do, but unfortunately, I painted my car first and the paint goes too far back on the hood to make it work. GREAT JOB! Looks awesome. Kendra |

Thanks to those that have commented & complimented this project. I had the raw scoop setting in my kitchen on top of the refrigerator for well over a year - so that I could see & critique it every day, before I started cutting up a perfectly good hood. Several people told me to just cut my original & save the money - but I just couldn't do that (just in case). Dan Pena - I wish I had your computer skills with picture editing. I have a bunch of pictures that I didn't include in the posting, because I didn't want to take up to much server space. Next year, after my next task - I may have a favor to ask of you. Thanks! Kraut - Rain? I try to stay out of that stuff w/ this car, if at all possible. But, I did put some thought into the topic during the project. There are holes that allow water to escape around the filter box & into the engine compartment. The K&N filter should turn any rain drops into a mist - if they even go through the filter at all. As far as a direct stream of water - that still could be a problem - if some was purposely using a hose to flood the scoop area. My biggest concern was when the hood is open. the bell horn & snorkel are open - direct to the throttle body. I have a louvered vent disc w/ a screen mesh on it that I put over the hole when the hood is up. I just have to remember to pull it out before I close the hood. Its shinny aluminum, so at least is stands out (for a visual reminder). This message has been edited by SPCL-T on 10-05-2003 at 01:25 PM |

Some have said that the Prowler is not a "real" hotrod. This sort of ingenious customization only reinforces the fact that the Prowler is indeed a fine platform for hotrodding. What an awesome addition - I want one. |

I absolutely would not have agreed that a hood scoop would look good. I was dead wrong, again. It looks great. |
