I just joined this site because I'm interested in buying a Prowler. I'm currently looking at a Yellow 2000 on eBay. It has 20,800 miles and the opening no reserve bid is $28.9K. Anything I should watch out for? What would be a good price to pay for this car.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=007&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=170069954174&rd=1,1

Any thoughts or comments about this car. Any input would be appreciated.

Also, where do you mount the front lic. plate?

First off,,,,go look at and drive the car. You are in the LA area,,,,so is the car. Second,,if you like it, get a CARFAX report on this vehicle and read it's history data.

You don't need a front license plate,,,,,,most Cali owners don't have them in place.

Good luck,,,,,looks like a nice car from the ad pictures. Maybe someone here knows the previous owner?

license plate can be mounted to front bumper,,,although I don't suggest doing it that way. I'm sure others will post some pictures of their ideas, and ways they have gotten around this situation and/or how they did their's.

stay tuned

I'm not sure if the one I purchased is still available.

This link below will take you to the license plate bracket I have and a couple of other GREAT ideas!

I ran a Carfax check on this car and it's clean except for the fact its been registered 4 times. Twice in Ohio, once in Flordia and the current oowner in Calif.

jordong - it was probably titled once by the original selling dealer before selling it,,,,to get credit in their Ohio county for the sale [its a long explanation on manufacturer distribution of advertising dollars, so I won't go into that]. Probably has had three actual owners,,,,,hmmm, that might concern me as well??

At this point you need to go look at and drive the car for sure. Take along anyone who really understands cars and body work, if you don't, and go over this car top to bottom before purchase. 70% chance this car is OK according to your Carfax report,,,,,,,,but look for the unknown [aka, overspray paint in the tiny cracks,,,possible engine work, etc] These cars do travel a bit when sold to other buyers,,,that is not unusual at all.

good luck

jordong,

I would probably take Phil up on his kind offer.

When I bought my 97 just over 3 years ago the CARFAX also said it was clean. If you look close...my kat has been repainted just below the drivers door. If you look closer...you can actually see where they burned through the clear.

Good luck on you purchase!

A few (not all) Florida Prowlers have experienced bubbling paint around some body edges such as the bottom of the trunk lid. This is a result of oxidation of the aluminum caused by the salt in the air.

I wouldn't give these last 2 replys the consideration of a politicians campaign speech. Hell we all know OHIO uses salt on the roads and has more localized flooding since Andrew hit south Florida in 1992 than a few good hurricanes have caused in this state since then.

After doing a CarFax check I found out it has had 4 previous owners. 2 in Ohio, 1 in Florida, and the current owner in Calif. 2 of the owners had the car for a year or less. Makes me wonder why they sold the car after such a sort time.

Anyway, I've decided not to bid on this car... the search continues. Thanks for everyone's input.

JordonG, If you check out the owner's registry here on POA you will see that the last two owners were members of the POA. Apollo232 (in FL) was the second last owner and the last owner lived in Cal. and he was thrilled to get the Prowler as a gift from his wife. He was battling cancer and according to the ad on eBay, he passed away.
I now own a 99 Red that was previously owned by 2 other Ohioans. The car had less than 3000 miles on it when I bought it. If I sell it, it would be the 4th owner and the car is perfect, so I would not automatically discount this car as a possible lemon. I knew the guy I bought the car from and he is a real car nut and owns 5 or 6 real beauties and takes care of them.
You might want to reconsider on this one. It looks pretty good and if you are close, you could swing by and look at it. Someone else has bid on it so it is going to sell. Wait until there is about 15 seconds left and put in a bid and you might do alright.

The yellow Kat I'm looking at is starting to get some bids on eBay. My hopes of getting this for $30K is looking slim. I sold my Mustang today and the money is buring a hole in my pocket. My search continues. Thanks to everyone for their advise.

Jordong,
I used a Long Beach zip for my search. There is a Yellow for about 29K but it's a good distance away from LA.

Good luck!

Since starting my search 10 days ago I've looked at 3 Prowlers on eBay that have been pulled by eBay. All were low milage and being sold at very low prices (around $22K). Since they have been pulled by ebay I assume these were scams. I guess you buy the car, send the money and they DO NOT deliver the car. I'm limiting my purchase in person to be safe. Another thing I noticed is when I do a Carfax check, a lot of Prowlers have been sold/bought at auction... another bad sign IMO.

2002 Yellow Kat on ebay looks like a good deal. One owner, 18K miles, starting price is $29K with no reserve.

I bought my 2001 orange on ebay two years ago, it took me over a year to actually get one purchased on ebay. I won many auctions, but alot of the time the reserve was never met, or it would be a scam of someone trying to get you to send a down payment, or the seller deciding that he wanted more money. It is a great place to find Prowlers but before you do all your homework, bid, win the auction, and get the seller to sell the car, Carfax is a must, and seeing and driving the car is also a must before you do any form of payment.

Make sure you get a good report on the condition of the wheels, if they are pitting and/or peeling you going to have a big bill on your hands to get them fixed or replaced.

On the flip side, I sold my first 99 Red on eBay to a guy in OK and he is very happy with it. He bought it sight unseen. It had over 50,000 miles on it but looked very good.
