It’s time to revisit the Great Smoky Mountains and this time we’re going to change things up a bit. Our host hotel will be the Greystone Lodge, one block off the main drag in Gatlinburg, TN. There is plenty to do and see in Gatlinburg and this location provides easy access to downtown (walking distance) as well as convenient access to the bus system that runs throughout Gatlinburg (bus stop across the street). There are many restaurants, shops, and activities to keep us busy in the evenings and throughout the event. There is a parking garage attached to the Lodge and hot breakfast is included with our rooms each morning.
The Greystone Lodge (800) 451-9202 Throughout the week we’ll be visiting some familiar places and exploring some new ones. The new section of the Foothills Parkway has opened since our last trip and provides some great cruising road and fantastic views. The Cades Cove loop has been fully paved (= now Prowler friendly) and the view from Clingman’s Dome is not to be missed. Of course, no trip to Tennessee is complete without running the Tail of the Dragon at least one time, and we’ll be running it twice – once in each direction. Another great scenic drive is the Cherohala Skyway and we’ll be re-visiting that as well. I think everyone enjoyed the train ride in West Virginia a couple of years ago, so we’re going to try and commandeer the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad for a day of sightseeing without a steering wheel in our hands all day. We’ll wrap up the event in typical fashion with a banquet dinner Friday evening and then head home Saturday morning.

The Great Gatlinburg Getaway (G3) Gatlinburg, Tennessee September 17th – 23rd 2023
Sunday 9/17 – Arrival day. Check in at the Greystone and reconnect with your fellow prowler owners. Get the cars cleaned up, fueled up and ready for the week. Walk around the corner and enjoy a meal, a drink, or a snack on Mainstreet Gatlinburg.
Monday 9/18 – Cades Cove (75 miles total travel) We’ll ease into vacation mode with a trip through Smokey Mountain Park to Cades Cove Scenic Loop Road. Afterward we’ll stop in Townsend for lunch and head back to Gatlinburg for an early day.
We’ll head out of Gatlinburg and through Pigeon Forge on our way across the Foothills Parkway to the Tail of the Dragon. We plan to stop at the Killboy store at the south end of the dragon, then head over to the Tapoco Lodge for lunch. Our route back to the resort will take us through Cherokee NC and we plan to stop at Clingman’s Dome (the highest point in TN) just before arriving back in Gartlinburg.
Wednesday 9/20 – Train Day (90 miles total travel) Head south to Bryson City NC for a ride aboard the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad. Thursday 9/21 – Skyway Day (217 miles total travel) Head out first thing for Tellico Plains and the western terminus of the Cherohala Skyway. We’ll run the Skyway from West to East and plan to stop in Robbinsville, NC for a fuel / lunch stop before heading up the Dragon and back to the Greystone Lodge. Friday 9/22 – Explore Gatlinburg SLEEP IN! Spend the day checking out the sites and sounds of Gatlinburg. Relax and enjoy your day off from driving.
