Greetings... New here. 1999 Prowler - new to me. 10k miles. I love it! Have an issue with my passenger side power door lock. Searched posts - no joy. The passenger side only lock does not work from the key fob, from the drivers side lock switch or from the passenger side door panel switch. What happens is it makes a sound for about 1 second that sounds like a running motor but the lock does not lock/unlock. It can be operated via the mechanical rocker on the passenger's door panel or from the door lock cylinder/key. Power windows and drivers side door lock all work fine. I have not yet taken it apart but think it is either the lock actuator assembly (stripped gears)? Or maybe a linkage or something that is loose from when the previous owner replaced the door speakers. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance. That's what you need, if you hear the whirring noise and the lock wont engage/disengage. The whirring noise is the gear inside the latch/actuator that has stripped. Good luck with the repair, hope you have small hands... This message has been edited by 1buddyc on 06-05-2017 at 02:55 PM |

I ended up ordering the actuator assembly from Amazon / MyMoparParts. The price was basically the same as the other place considering the free shipping but the main thing was that MyMoparParts had very high customer satisfaction ratings (96% and ~500 ratings) whereas the other place had about 70% very happy customers and 30% POed... I'll report back as to how the repair works out. |

I finally got around to replacing my door lock actuator assembly which was preventing my power door lock from operating. The symptoms that necessitated this are described in the first post of this thread. I documented the procedure: Steps for replacing power door lock actuator assembly: The actuator assembly is also actually the door latch located right at the rear edge of the door. To start with roll the window up and unlock the door. Summary: Detailed procedure: My pictures below are for the passenger side (right) actuator assembly. Very carefully remove the interior plastic trim bezel around the door opener/manual door lock. Insert a credit card under the back edge and then push in on it hard as you slide it back. I recommend you do this while sitting in the car with the door closed. That way, you can press in on the bezil HARD as you push it back toward the back of the car and not break the little tabs. Use a stiff putty knife (painters 5-in-1 tool) or similar to pry the bottom and rear of the door panel out. There are four black plastic plugs that hold it in place. Two on the bottom and two on the back edge of the door. Lift the door panel up and out to get it loose. If the little double head black plastic plug clips get broken they are readily available at the auto parts store.
Pull down the black plastic flexible shield that is stuck to the inside of the door sheet metal. This would be a good time for a visual examination of your door speaker to see if it appears to be damaged or otherwise needs replacement. Continued.... Continued from previous post... Now remove three screws from the inside door opener assembly. There is an H clip about 3" x 3" that you will remove that was held in place by two of the above screws. This will allow the door opener assembly to be pulled loose from the interior door sheet metal. The door lock actuator assembly has 4 linkages that connect to it. The plastic clips on the actuator assembly are color coded: Release the white, green, orange linkage retainer plastic clips using your fingers or a long screwdriver. The red one is very hard to get to so that it will be later. Remove the three T30 torx bolts from the rear edge of the door. These hold the door actuator/door latch assembly in place. Now, pull out on the manual door latch assembly out and move it toward the front of the car to pull the linkage rods forward and move the door actuator assembly to where you can access the red linkage rod clip and small red/orange wires wiring harness plug. Now install the new door lock actuator assembly. The de-assembly took about 1 hr and was hard. The reassemble was even harder and took 2 hours. On the reassembly end once I duct taped a flashlight in place on the interior door sheet metal things went a lot quicker. I used needle nose pliers, long screw drivers and a homemade spring hook (fashioned from a coat hanger) to connect the linkages. Now reinstall the door panel. First thing is to reconnect the wiring harness with the white connector to the lock/window switch assembly. This would be a good time to make sure the power door lock, manual door lock, inside door release, outside key, door handle and power window are all work properly. (don't ask me how I know this :-)) Next make sure the panel hangs right on the top edge (compare to the other door). Then use a flashlight to ensure the little black plastic plugs are going into the holes in the door sheet metal. Bang the door panel in place with your hand at the location of the 4 black fasteners. Reinstall the 3 screws (2 long at front and one short inside the grab handle on the door panel and finally the install manual door lock assembly bezel. Good luck. I don't remember any of them going bad. How was your speaker and did you inspect your power window regulator for cracks in the plastic? The dark color cars are harder to work on especially the doors. I have been in my drivers door three times now and with a black car and a poorly lit garage it is really tough to see especially with old eyes. lol Thanks for the detailed information, it will be in the archives now for others in the future.
