Here is my lastest research on possible tires for our cats. Does anyone have thoughts, suggestions, or comments? The BF Goodrich KDW 2 have an interesting tread pattern. |

Note that the 20" Cooper tires are 30.66 in high. On my car when the body lifts away fromthe tires it rubs on the frame in FRONT of the tire. If you grind the top edgeof the horizontal piece of the frame about 1/8 of an inch, it doesn't rub but maybe one time a week in an extreme case. |

Mac - I have always liked the BF Goodrich Comp T/A's JMO The Kumhos look nice also. |

I also like the BFGoodrich Comp T/A ZR SSS, but if you look at the tread width it is 1.2" smaller than the OEM tire. This would not give the appearance of filling in the wheel well and this is the problem I have with the Dunlop. The Comp's would even be smaller. I wish I could get the tread width for the G-force KDW 2 - the tread pattern kind of looks like flames. |

Thanks for the info. Valuable stuff. I have the Goodrich TA's on now for about 23k. After the first 7K or so they seemed to get very hard, the backs don't grip at all it seems. Being as I have not had a flat in since the first 10K of the car, (59K now), I think I am going to go without runflats for a smoother ride, and maybe better grip. |

Also, a preliminary search on Falken tires, came up with this. http://www.falkentire.com/tires/suv_choose.htm granted, for light truck duty, but kind of cool pattern, but not completely sure they will fit yet. When I emailed them they replied they did not have a replacement for the Prowler tires. |

John - as I sated above. 30.66 diameter on my Coopers. DO NOT GO ANY LARGER. I can not stress that enough. They won't fit. I am happy with them (light truck tires also) but wish they were 30.4. I went with 45 aspect to get a little better ride. |

Yeah I saw that Marty. They have one 30.6 inches tall. I was hoping to find a bit smaller, still looking. |

I had a blow out on the front tire almost three years ago with the run flat. Don't remember any drag from the mud flap. Drove it about 20 miles on it. |

quote: I still have OEM tires..I thought they gripped like crap after 5K miles..then realized the pressure dropped with outside temps. Did you check tire pressure? I beleive underinflated tires that are run flats have much less grip as the hard sidewalls are the only part making contact with pavement. ...So what would be the best replacemnt tire (runflat or not) that filles the wheel well as nice as the OEM tires? I would like to get other than Goodyear tires. |

I know Marty stated 305/45/20 Cooper's he put on where a little to big - so I was sure 295/45/20 BF Goodrichs would fit. I was wrong. Any suggestions Marty? Mind this was with the car on the lift. This is the car on the ground. My concern is on a hard corner. I if the tire makes contact with the frame it may stop the tire.

Chris - with your experience in the wheel & tire industry what would be your thoughts on this issue? The tire only hits when it is on the lift. When this car corners, would tire ever travel far enough to hit the frame? |

quote: Mine touch in the same place when the car is raised off the ground. When you hit a pot hole the frame compresses and the space actually gets wider. It is when you crest a rise and the body "lifts" higher, away from the wheel that the tire will rub. I ground down the top edge of the frame where it rubs at a 45 degree angle to lessen the contact area. In 8,000 miles of driving it has rubbed several times going over partricularly even overpasses or on an occasional bump but no loss of control when going straight. Once, and only once on a hard turn with banking, the tire rubbed and I could feel a twist in the steering wheel. I probably would feel it in all out driving like an Autocross with sharp turns, etc. Marty This message has been edited by Marty Usher on 02-22-2004 at 08:40 PM |
