Author | Topic: Does your transmission make a "Bzzzzzt" noise when shifting into 1st or reverse? |
JD![]() ![]() POA Site Supporter Prowler Junkie From:West Chester, PA 19382 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I searched the site for this but didn't find anything similar. When I shift into first or reverse from park or neutral, my 2001's transmission makes a faint ratchet/rattle ("Bzzzzzt") noise that lasts a half second or so. I notice it on the downshift too. It's especially noticable when backing into the garage. There are no performance problems at all with the car, just a funny noise. Anyone else heard this noise? Is it normal? Thanks in advance... ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My '02 has done that a couple of times as well. I thought it was strange. It hasn't done it in a few days though. *shrug* |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I get a noise when putting it in to reverse sometimes. It's most noticable in an enclosed area like my garage. I never heard it on a downshift, but with no mufflers, I dont hear much low level noise, radio, horns, screaming passengers, etc. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Happens sometimes, but not often. I asked the Service manager about it once when he heard it while I was at the dealer. Said it was normal and not to worry. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I forget about noises. Just remove the catalytic converters & put on a set of glass packs and you don't hear any noises. ![]() ![]() Of course the Service Tech at the dealership can't hear them either. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Noticed that same 'bzzzzzt' sound in the car last time I drove it ... funny thing was, when I walked backwards I heard it again. Then again when walking forward ... 'bzzzzzt' here, 'bzzzzt' there ... seemed to follow me where ever I went ... then I noticed a darn fly circling my head and every time it made a pass by my ear ... 'bzzzt' ... so I grabbed my one and only 'collectible issue' of Prowl magazine and "SWAT" ... cured the 'bzzzzt'! ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mine does it going into reverse and is noticeable down shifting into lower gears. I asked the dealer what it was and he told me that it was some sort of solenoid in the transmission that activates for shifting purposes. He said it was normal, even though I sometimes question the dealers knowledge. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The buzz sound is the servo change the gear on the tranny is all. Its normal if you drive just about any chrysler product you will hear it ------------------ L_delk@mailcity.com |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lance.D is correct. The bzzzt sound you hear every time you slow down is the solenoid packs in the transmission. Instead of bands, our transmissions have solenoid packs to change the gears, and that is why you hear the clicking sound whenever you slow down or reverse, etc. You can't hear it at high speeds cause there is too much engine and air noise. Like Marty said, just put on a free flowing exhaust and a few glasspacks and you probabl wont hear them anymore... But I wouldn't remove the cats for 3 reasons: 1. It's bad for the environment. My buddy always says "who cares about the environment", but I dont want my kids breathing bottled air. 2. You can face fines of around 1500 bucks if you are caught without them. 3. The chrysler 3.5 V6's are kind of finnicky when it comes to low end torque, and so removing the cats will drop your low end torque, and might even make your check engine light come one, due to the oxgen sensors not knowing whats going on. It happened to my buddys 3.5. But of course, it will increase your top end power nicely... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() JD This is normal. I wasn't sure at first until I pestered by dealer (who also owns a prowler). His does it too. Then, last week I was down in Florida driving my mother-in-law's sebring conv. and when the top was down, I noticed the same sounds. It is just a quirk of Chrysler tranny. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mine just started. When you downshift or accelerate it makes a metallic vibration sound. I parked the car and and brought it up to 1900 rpm and the noise was constant. Took it to my local friend who's a mechanic and he thinks its the catalytic converter..taking it in on monday |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() People, I was told by the people over at Ontario Chrysler that the solenoid is to prevent the hard shift shock that some cars have. I have three Chrysler products and all three have this feature. On some of my previous cars (Nissan Maxima 87 and Sentra 91 and Chevy Citation 80), what happens when I shifted into drive or even into reverse is that the transmission would shift "hard" and there would be this jolt. It couldn't have been good for the transmission. ECurtis |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I always had that little buzz and it drove me crazy. I asked another Prowler owner because he had it too... so we set about to find the buzz ! There are 2 front exhaust hangers, just south of the Catalytic converters. These hangers have a little round piece of rubber inside of them to stop vibration. Well when I checked them, one of the little rubber pieces was missing. Everytime I put the car in gear or Reverse it made that stupid buzz. Im not saying that this is everyones problem but I bet It will be 50% of them. Both of Our two cars had the little rubber insulator missing. Mike DQ Man

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() quote: Don't know. I will have to ask. If I were to venture a guess I would say that neutral doesn't engage any gears but disengages from the gears and maybe much less potential of damage because no gears are engaged. However when you put it back in drive or reverse the gears re-engage. Just my guess. ECurtis |
