Forget about wasting time and money reinventing the wheel.... I fixed my center caps with a hot glue gun, removed and reinstalled them over and over with no more breakage.. I BROKE THREE OUT OF THREE WHEN THEY WERE STOCK !!! Simply apply hot melt glue to the spring side of each mounting finger, apply from the tip to the base. Make a bead just inside of both edges,DON'T BURN YER FINGERS ..Lemme know if anyone needs additional info, I'll try to get one of the geeks to help me post pictures of mine.... Trust me on this one, you can almost stand on them now !!! Save your money for pretty parts.... hehe...... MADMAX ------------------ |

Good idea Max. I used a bead of silicone to reinforce mine. ------------------ |

Max burnt his fingers while using the hot glue gun. We had to take him to the emergency room for treatment = cost, $1036 for burnt fingers. Guess he should have bought 20 extra center caps instead!!! ------------------ |

Thanks for the tip. I finally broke the tabs on one of my center caps this past weekend. I ended up using superglue to put it back together for the time being. I am going to hot glue them all tonight. ------------------ • MTD Prowler Intake System 2.1 With EGR Bypass Kit Future Mods: |

I thought Jerry from DC said for 2002 the center caps were all metal now. If this is true why cant we just order them and replace? |

Bob - What I heard Jerry say at CAAP was that Am. Racing was now improving the cap by using a heavier gauge wire. Can't see how that will improve anything. I could be wrong?

You have a point there, I have no problem with my center caps and I dont think Larry Lord does either, its all in the adhesion of things, good food, good structure.

I think Jerry actually said that they were going to use lighter gauge wire. That makes sense as it should take less force to snap the center caps in place. ------------------

They should make them metal like in my Viper or use better plastics. ------------------ 2000 Prowler Woodward Edition (red/black-USA) |

Steve -maybe you are right? We were eating at the time, and I might of misunderstood Jerry. I still don't think the wire gauge change will make a difference with the weak plastic tabs from breaking. We either need new cap design or VIVA LA MADMAX This message has been edited by ALLEY CAT on 08-28-2001 at 11:24 PM |

I wasn't there but talking to Jerry and Marcia I thought he said they were switching to Verizon WIRELESS. Just trying to sort out the confusion. |

OK, Here's the deal on the center caps... Just got this from a reliable source: Hub caps: the retention wire has a reduced diameter since mid-June 2001 and is on all 2002 cars. The part number is 4865352AB.

When at the local dealer yesterday for "low tire light", I checked on center caps. The only one in stock was a broken one that came off of a brand new blue cat on their showroom floor. So maybe the new smaller wire was not the answer. Someone had posted earlier that these things are going to be as scarse as hens teeth after production stops. They only have to supply parts for 10 years after they quit prodcing a car. My plan was to buy 8 or 10 of them for safe keeping. Changed my mind whe he priced them at $106 plus change each. Max, could you get one of the geeks to post pictures of your hot glue process? Better yet maybe we need to turn Harry Findley loose on DM for a perminate solution!!! |

Ok, Being somewhat newer to this board, you will have to excuse my ignorance. How are these center caps breaking, when they are being put back on, when they are being taken off? Why are so many people taking them off in the first place? Thanks. ------------------ |

Tony - taking off when putting on front mud flaps, new brake pads, cleaning, etc. Plastic tabs supporting the wire is worthless idea some design engineer came up with-JMO. Break either coming off or going on - seen both ways. Proceed with caution!

Just replaced 2 broken center caps today. Notice that the new ones that Chrysler gave me under warranty had a smaller gauge wire in them. Don't know if this is going to help stop them from breaking or not. |

Im having the dealer put on ceramic front brake pads. I ordered the front center caps from the dealer because if they break off the clips they'll have new center caps, under warranty, in stock for me. It took the dealer 2 months to get the center caps. They told me there is a nationwide shortage (like people all over the nation clammoring for these caps). Have you heard the same thing from your dealer?? Thanks in advance. ------------------ This message has been edited by NightProwler on 10-06-2001 at 04:15 PM |

I ordered my caps on Oct 3 and picked them up on Oct 5th. The new ones with the smaller wire went on easier than the old ones. I bet the rest of the old caps are going to break before my warranty is out. |

On wed. eve, 10-10, I finally got the chance to see the MADMAX HOT GLUE SYSTEM. I'm impressed with the idea and the strength it provided. I watched as Gary popped off and on his center caps with no breakage - amazing. After he does mine (free of charge), I'll give it the ALLEY CAT STAMP OF APPROVAL. This idea really works and can save us some money down the road (after warranty)! My hat is off to Gary for a job well done. We need to get some pic posted I know, so give us some time. ------------------ |
