I sincerely appreciate all the input and that this thread has so far stayed on track.

Buying another Prowler has crossed my mind but it doesn't meet my needs for a car that will better get through the snow.

Having a car that gets through the snow is one of the things I need in a new car. A rear wheel drive car would work well if it had a rear engine (Yes I have one of those already). I really feel that a front engine front wheel drive car works better for my needs at this time.

alrtg, the specificity and stringency of the numerous requirements and constraints you've listed for your new car purchase helped make it easier than I'd thought originally, for us to try to help you.

I think the best (and perhaps only) choice meeting the overwhelming majority of your numerous stated criteria appears to be a Honda Civic LX Coupe.

In short, I basically agree with stevedymo.

Although he and I arrived at the same car recommendation, we may have done so employing different means. I arrived at my car recommendation by scanning the basic specs Consumer Reports listed for 260 new cars. This actually was much easier than it initially may sound --- especially after quickly dismissing, for example (and per your criteria), anything from GM, any 4-door vehicle, any 2-door vehicle not designed to seat more than one passenger, any turbo-powered vehicles, any diesels or any hybrids, as well as anything other than a vehicle with an automatic transmission, or any vehicle that is not front-wheel-drive only.

Further helping to narrow things down, there is also a price point constraint:

quote:
Originally posted by alrtg:

My price point is something under $25,000.00 MSRP including all shipping & taxes.

In turn, to meet that constraint of "under $25,000.00 MSRP including all shipping and taxes" the MSRP of a Honda Civic LX needs to be no more than $22,794. That price plus $790 "destination and handling", and assuming 6% Maryland sales tax on both the $22,794 and $790, amounts to $24,999 in total --- i.e., "something under $25,000".

If some of my Maryland tax assumptions are incorrect, or one wants to include the cost of title and registration, some of my pricing calculations obviously will need some tweaking to be more accurate.

In any case, thanks again for providing us your specific requirements and constraints for your impending new car purchase; I found that very useful and wish you the best of luck with your purchase.

Show Car; very well done. That is my choice exactly; of course my opinion has little value as I am her father. I am sure you have given this equation more thought than any others on this site.

To clarify matters for any following this thread, I am not a Honda dealer, nor even an auto broker, for any brand, including the Honda Civic LX I've suggested for alrtg.

I just happen to read what people like alrtg post, and then try to offer them suggestions, IF they've requested same in a lucid fashion, as alrtg most certainly has.

Thank you for the kudos, JeraneW. Your daughter's inquiry is perhaps one of the more complete I've seen on this forum. That, in turn, makes it easier for us to reply to if one chooses to expend the minimal effort required to actually READ her lucidly-written inquiry, before replying to it with some knee-jerk response, which curiously often seems to focus only on the personal preferences of someone other than those of the thread's originator.

Alloy wheels.

alrtg, some advantages of the Scion tC over the Honda Civic LX admittedly are:

  • OEM "Remote Start" appears to be unavailable on the Honda Civic LX I suggested, but optional with the Scion tC.
  • OEM "Alloy wheels" appear to be optional on the Honda Civic LX, but standard with the Scion tC.

Something that would be comfortable to drive long distances if needed.

A potential disadvantage of the Scion tC is:
  • The Scion tC coupe is reported to have an overly jittery ride.

More specifically, a good-news/bad-news summary on the Scion tC in Consumer Reports includes this commentary: "...the cabin, particularly the rear seat, is quite spacious for a coupe. But a jittery ride and noisy cabin detract from the overall experience...."

That last phrase doesn't seem to bode well for ride comfort on a short drive --- let alone what you'd mentioned you would like/prefer to have: "Something that would be comfortable to drive long distances if needed".

For me, even the mere mention of "a jittery ride" could be a deal-breaker, as it was when I opted for a new 2000 Prowler, as opposed to a new 1999 Prowler of the same color.

Nonetheless, I recognize readily that the concept of "ride comfort" likely varies substantially from one individual to the next. Accordingly, unless the roads you usually travel are mirror-smooth, that commentary by Consumer Reports may suggest a distraction-free test drive, on your part, of a new 2014 or 2015 Scion tC, to determine if its purported "jittery ride" actually is a deal-breaker for you, or not.

In either case, good luck to you with your purchase.

ShowCar, I was pulling your chain. I knew you weren't a dealer but you did such a great job of research I thought I would post that your research had won me over, ALSO.

I just leased a new Corolla... beautiful little car, quiet, smooth and easy on gas... going to be hard to give it up when the lease is done... My second choice was the Scion TC, the only reason I didn't take it was they don't deal on the Scions and they through in lots of extras on the corolla.... I went to look at the Honda and they were to busy to take the time to answer my questions.. truthfully I was not that interested in the Honda as I had one that caused me nothing but headaches and money, the rust killed it before my payments were done...

Follow up:

Finally today I pulled the trigger and got a "New to me" used car.
I bought a one owner 2010 Ford Focus Coupe with 11,229 miles on it.

This is close enough to "New" for me at this time and it saved me a bundle in immediate depreciation.

I paid a premium for this car but hope it pays off with years of good service as a basic commuter car.

All of the input is sincerely appreciated and I felt the least I could do would be to let you all know the outcome.

Congratulations Andria, judging by the mileage it hasn't been hurt.

I checked the Car Fax (for all that is worth) and found the car was built on Sept. 21st 2009 but didn't sell until Sept. 28th 2011 with 148 miles on it.

June 4th 2012 it got an oil change @ 400 miles.

August 1st 2013 it went to the Dealer to have the battery checked. My guess is it went dead from a combination of age and sitting. It has a new battery in it now.

Only time will tell if it will be a good commuter for me or not. I will keep the trusty 1991 S-10 as back-up at least for a while but the 2000 AWD Astro Van might have to go bye bye.

I think you made the best choice > FORD

but it would concern me why it didn't sell for two years, unless it was a dealer loaner car for the service department......but then again the 148 miles wouldn't make sense either.

Good luck,,,tell us how it goes in the snow

Nice pick up, my 2010 has almost 100k on it now and just getting ready to change the original breaks, no issues with the car at all. Chris has been driving it the last 30k
