Does anyone have experience with "American Car Craft" repair kit? It consists of two rigid metal strips that are affixed to the tube and motor in such a way as to make it inflexible. They can be purchased through theprowlerstore.com ( http://theprowlerstore.com/Products_Page_Parts_Upgrades_Replacement_Parts_Door_Window_Regulator.htm ). The new regulars mentioned above look awesome, I'm just looking for a slightly less expensive, yet quality, repair. This message has been edited by psynk on 03-09-2016 at 12:08 PM |

quote: If you are looking for quality, Go with Tom Mills regulators. The ones from the Prowler store look just like the junk regulators that came with the car. Some members here have had good luck fixing them, But if you want a regulator that will take the test of time, Go with Toms product This message has been edited by phil2237 on 03-09-2016 at 02:22 PM |

The repair kit I was referring to is the first image, not the OEM looking regulator, which I'm sure is just as high a quality as the OEM one :-(. I pulled the driver side and attached images 5986 and 5987, showing three breaks. I've decided that, even though the Prowler is for sale, I want to do a quality fix. So, I've called Jefferson Auto Collision to order their kits and am awaiting a callback. I watched their video and the only thing that raises the hair on the back of my neck is tapping the channel over the glass. Last thing I want to do is buy another window (if I can find one). THis site is such a great resource for repairs. Thanks!

Tapping the channel onto the glass is done with a small block of wood to prevent the glass from shattering while holding the glass in your lap. Very easy to put the channel on. |

If you think about it the Prowler Store repair kit doesn't do anything more than bolting the broken regulator back into the door does. Their kit keeps the broken tube from separating the same as bolting it back in the door only after bolting the metal strips on it would make it so stiff you will have to bend it up to even get it back in the door. And if the rear lift plate that bolts the glass in is broken it wouldn't do anything anyway. Seems to me to be a big waste of time and money. As Phil said installing the lift sash on the glass is really pretty simple. I usually stand the glass on a piece of carpet or similar materiel and use a plastic mallet. You can lube it up with a little water. |

I'm going with the best choice, not the cheapest. Hopefully the next owner will appreciate the enhancements. I have tried to keep the car as stock as possible, but sometimes 'stock' isn't the best decision. |

Tom's regulator will be selling point when it is time for you to sell. In the mean time you won't have to be concerned with the operation of your windows. |

I have installed repair kits before, not TPS', but they were very similar. It takes the tension off of the tube and then you have to wrap it up with tape once the metal pieces are attached. I did both a d/s (which was broke)and a p/s window (as preventative maintenance) for my friend (who's looking for a rack and pinion BTW) and it worked like a charm. Yes it is very stiff going back in, but I believe that is the point. It does fix the regulator for a modest amount of money until new ones become available again. That being said, if the pvc tube is in a million pieces its probably not going to help and Tom's kit would be the way to go. JMO. |

If you read what I said, I said NOT TPS. NOT. In fact I am fairly certain TPS copied the ones I used: http://prowler-products.com/?product=window-repair-kit Perhaps Tom should send an email to this gentleman and tell him his product is useless. Worked just fine when I needed it to. I use TPS because they are 2 towns over from where I live in FL. I know people have had bad experiences with them and trailer hitch blah blah... I haven't, but you know what they say about opinions... I worked for Chrysler for the last 17 years in NJ and now work for FLM in FL. I still have a valid SID and access to Chrysler's system. So if you'd rather I didn't participate I have no problem not participating. I am only here trying to help out and contribute to the community. Dixie, I don't have my car anymore, got into a wreck back in NJ. I have PT and a Hyundai now. I have to carry the insurance on my house, never asked about it for the cars. I assume it would be covered under the catastrophic portion of the insurance rider though. This is sinkhole country. Given the choice I probably wouldn't have moved down here, unfortunately had to due to a family illness. |

I installed Tom's new regulator on the driver side today. I have to say this is a VERY FINE piece of machinery, somebody got an A in shop class in high school. Between the written directions, the pictures, and the video on YouTube, I was able to get everything right the first time. The only issue I had was that I ordered both the driver and passenger regulators and I had no idea which was which until I compared the regulators to the pictures and the video which were of the driver side. Once I had the correct regulator, it was easy-peasy(ish). Tom tells me there was supposed to be a sticker on each. Thank you all for your input. I have a few other issues to address in new posts as I continue to making this Kat as pristine as possible before the next owner takes her.
