Can anyone explain the difference bewteen the Gen 1, Gen 2, and Prowler store hardtops as far as form, fit, and function? I see references to the three but don't know how they are different or if one is a better buy than the other. Thanks. |

This is from my research and I could be wrong on some of it. Gen 1 and 2 were made by Metalcrafters back in the early prowler days. Gen 1 had some problems that were corrected with gen 2. They are part of the Prowler history. They were made in conjunction with a series of other parts by Metalcrafters which together formed the Prowler deemed "California Howler". It included custom engine panels, front spoiler with side ferrings, custom grill, turn signal relocation kit, rear belly pan, rear deck spoiler and the hardtop. I could be missing stuff. here is a great build thread on it. This hardtop is of high quality. All these parts are now collectables IMO. The prowler store hardtop is a part currently in production and I know nothing about it. I think silverkat had some posts on it if you do a search. Edited: It looks like a Carlini Roll Pan and M&L automotive Stainless Steel Grill after re-reading that thread. This message has been edited by beachcat on 02-09-2013 at 02:15 PM |

Generation 1 has an insert over the door windows. I presume it is aluminum, but I am not positive. Gen. 2 does not have that. |

Didn't it also have a flatter top section? |

The biggest difference between the two generations is the attachment of the Top Weatherstrips that seal the Hardtop to the top of the Door Glasses when the windows are raised. On Gen I, the Weatherstrips over the doors are glued in. On Gen II's the re-designed weatherstrips fit into a plastic channel that is screwed into the roof. The channeled weatherstrips fit and hold their positions MUCH better than the glued in ones which had a habit of always coming loose. Also, the Gen I has a "flatter" top surface than the Gen II, which is more rounded. |

Have a Gen 1. Here are some other factoids. Mine does not have the alum strip and there is no evidence on either side that one was ever attached. There is a "reverse" drip indent, only about 1/32" deep, where this would fit if say an aftermarket product were available (Bkat's photo is the first I have ever seen). This indent is entirely non-functional and barely visible - just a design element I would think. I haven't seen a Gen 2, but the rear poly tinted window (don't use Windex which contains ammonia !!) has the Metalcrafters insignia etched on inside center bottom. This design has the MC marque on the left and "Metalcrafters" with (old) phone # and wings on the right. It also has the AS-1 tinting designation which is legal, most states, for f/r 35 - admits 35% light. As Buddy says, the weatherstrips are glued on -- use rubber cement when they come loose. Also, the top is flat as seen in Bkat's pix. A definite clue is the headliner. Gen 1s were dark gray (like the interior cat trim) and the 2s were light gray - see Buddy's pix which is actually more washed maybe cause of lighting used. Mine came with the stock cat short rear pins. All the fit problems noted in many prior posts are true with the Gen 1s. This is worsened because the fiberglass has begun (or was originally) warped, but not so badly. Thanks to Buddy, I got a set of longs (some POAs say they can still be found -- do a search). But surprise-surprise, they don't really work with the orig Gen 1 weatherstripping !! If you do a complete search, Scott Curtis (RIP) made one comment on this prob and offered to sell thicker ws, but his source is lost. I added a second ws that helps and actually improves the appearance as it closes the gap (hdt bottom to deck) of the old, but still leaves a slight sliver of light to outside. Have a third I will try next time I take the top off. The long pins are still usable because of the hex design (if only the origs has this feature !!) but can't use the top "stuff" until I find another ws design. The top is indeed flatter as shown in Bkat's pix. Note: the inside has four access holes for adjustments. Mine came with three plugs missing and had to improvise. Don't have to match perfectly as the fronts are mostly hidden by the visors and the rears aren't really noticeable behind the headrests. If anyone can fab these I'd be interested in getting replacements as they do fall out being just a push-fit. All pix of hts are similar whatever the mfg, so it's the details that matter. Recommend a hoist (do search); mine is electric and it works fine; installation can be tricky depending on garage ceiling design. Hope all this helps those w/questions. |

Good, informative post Mr. O (last name deleted) Lethia has the Gen 2 with the longer pins. Love the look Only drawback, getting into the trunk and two man job to safely remove/install. This message has been edited by ALLEY CAT on 02-10-2013 at 12:54 PM |

Geeesss, AC, now all know my last name. Am really concerned about identity theft now. Maybe this is so no one mistakes Rich Ware, Radcat Rich, others from me, but I am humbled to be in this company. At least my name isn't Larry. Hey, Rich, RichO, Rich will do fine. Thanks for the ps, more info on making the ht more cool. Got the side windows tinted same. In TN (and others states), the legal limit is 35 for A-B sides (more back sides don't matter - like if you put T-Bird ports on ht - this would be WAY cool) mostly so law ofcrs can see inside for weapon threats, etc. When you see cars "murdered", they've either done it themselves (kits all over on web down to 5 which is effectively blacked out) or found pro installer (rec'd) who doesn't care. Nice thing about pro installer is that they put a sticker on bottom rear which "officiates" that the tinting conforms to legal limits. |

I drove the hemi Kat for the first extended time all day yesterday with the gen II TGF hard top! It was a great experience especially in the cooler weather. Well made, seals well, more head room,a different experience! To me feels worth the money to have the option. Gotta watch the blind spots more. One of our local, AZ owners just received his hardtop from the P/Store the other day. Thought some of you might like to see how it comes shipped? As soon as we find some old paint brushes and old rollers,,,it will get painted |

I would be very interested, on how the next step with the hard top proceed. Example paint time , fitting on car, and anything else that may ocure. |

quote: Great post Larry That's exactly the way mine came. For 370build it cost me 300. to paint base coat clear coat. As Catfish recommends they removed rubber channel from back window to paint right up to the edge. When I installed it fit great with minor adustment to pins. They're adjustable so you sit in car and do it with all 4 til your satisfied. Took about 1/2 hour to get it right. It's heavy and bulky so it's a 2 man job or in my case 1 girl and me cause I only have girls. I'm satisfied and would go the same route again. Let us know how you and your friend make out AC. Use nice even brush strokes |

There is the selct group and the malcontent whiners who gripe about the select group, elsewhere on the internet. Everyone starts as select and then they select how they will be perceived. It pretty much takes care of itself and usually doesn't take all that long to figure out which group you fit in. No vote is needed, it is usally quite obvious very quickly. |

Anddddd, no one really answered the question about the difference between the gen II and the prowler store hardtop. Is the prowler store hardtop as "sleek" as the gen I? |

One is a piece of history. The other isn't. The only difference I can see from the pictures is the wide band around the rear window on the PS hardtop. It really stands out on the silver color. I'm not sure if anyone has both to do a real comparison. |
