Recently I shipped my wheels to a company in California for re-chroming. Took about a month and the wheels came back. The rears look pretty good, but the fronts are disappointing. Before shipping them out for re-chroming my fronts had the normal pealing and pitting that many owners have experienced. Also, the owner of the company claimed that some Canadian firm had the contract with DC for chroming the original Prowler wheels, not American Racing - don't know how he knows this... Anyway, below are some photos of my front wheels after the re-chroming process was complete. I sent these photos to the wheel chroming company in California questioning some of the spots. They looked at the photos and said they were as good as they could make them. Specifically, they said the spots on the wheels were from pitting and that the re-chroming process could not cover up. I asked why they couldn't sandblast or grind the wheel to eliminate the pits before re-chroming and they said if they sandblasted the wheel the wheel would not look good even after re-chroming. Then I asked about what looks like pieces of the old chrome in some photos, that apparently were not removed before re-chroming the wheel. The technician assured me those were not left over pieces of the old chrome, but rather imperfections in the original wheel. The faces of the wheels look very good, the problem areas in the photos are in the drum or barrel area. Since this is my first experience with this sort of project I'm curious if some of you more knowledgeable than me can confirm what I'm being told is true or if the appearance could have been improved. |

Disappointing is the understatement of the century. I am not an expert but I would think they could have done a better job than that. |

My wheels were done at Wheel Concepts in California. I REQUESTED that the barrel be polished and plated to match the face. IF you did not request this they will not do it. One of the problems with the factory chrome wheels is the barrels were not prepped before plating. I do not know who you had do them, but I made sure before mine went out what I expected. I hope they gave you a warranty I have a set of painted wheels for when I want to replace what is on the car. The guy that did mine did not want to do a wheel that was already chromed. I know other POA members that say Wheel Concepts are not the best at doing Prowler wheels, but I guess I got lucky ------------------ |

I used Wheel Concepts and I paid extra to get the barrels done to match the face. I told them that since the Prowler had open wheels in the front, the barrels had to look sharp. They told me my wheels looked "primo." Obviously they interpret that word differently than I do. |

I HAD MY DONE BY ONE OF MY VENDERS,,, COMPANY CALLED NEUTRON PLATING...THEY ARE RIGHT HERE IN ANAHEIM . THEY DID IT AS A FAVOR FOR ME AT NO CHARGE.. THEY HAD MINE FOR 4 WEEKS, BUT EVERY SINGLE SPOT WAS FILLED OR FIXED... THE FRONT LOOKS AS GOOD AS THE REARS, INSIDE & OUT.. I WOULD HONESTLY SEND THOSE RIMS BACK, & HAVE THEM REDONE.. |

Sorry ... they look like crap ... I would definitely raise an issue with them, but seeing this, am very happy I went the 'polished' route. Hope you get your wheels the way you want them! |

Hi Wow what a bad job. My first job out of high school was working on a chrome plating machine at an auto parts company in Southern California. One of the things I learned was as part of the chrome'ing process they plate nickel. First Copper then Nickel then the Chrome. The way it works is the more time in the nickel tank the smoother the chrome job. When nickel is being plated it tends to fill in or smooth out the surface. At one point the machine to buff lug nuts wasn't working so we left them in the nickel tank over lunch and they came out smoother than if they were buffed and then plated. I would say this company didn't prep the wheels properly in addition to not leaving them in the nickel tank long enough. Glenn |

That is a really bad chroming job. It doesn't look like they polished the inside before plating. Get your money back and send them to Gary (Prowler Products by Gary). He does an awesome job and at a great price. Good luck. |

Hi Bob, I had my wheels rechromed because of pitting. They were done by wheels n Motion in Pomona CA. (909) 622-1232. They said when American Racing did the wheels they were done in the cheapest possible way they could be done. They reddid my wheels and said before they were chromed they needed to be nickel plated to give the chrome something to adhere to. They said it is a more costly process but well worth it, and they were right. Mine came out absolutely beatiful. They cleaned all the old chrome off by dipping them in acid. I seen them and they were just bare metal. They cleaned all the foreign matter off them before they started the chroming process. I would say the person who chromed yours has no idea what he is doing. I can tell you for a fact mine don't look like yours and yours don't have to and shouldn'tlook like that if done correctly. That is just substandard work. I hope you used your credit card as payment. If you did I would put that transaction in contest immediately. I have had several sets of wheels as well as other parts for different cars chromed and I have never seen anything that looks like that. Hope you can straighten this out! Steve |

Hey nitro, how much did it cost you to rechrome them if you don't mind me asking, I think I may have to do that on some of my trailer rims, especially the red one that came out of Florida, they are real bad. Won't be too long and the car is gonna need them, the fronts are starting to bubble again! |

Bob, I'm with A/C...can you stop payment on them? If not...I would try and resolve it A.S.A.P. Hopefully the company will stand by their work. I would try and resolve it in a calm manner. I know they didn't come out the way you wanted them to but if you pi$$ them off...you'll probably get nothing from them. You could always try mentioning the Better Business Bureau report that you may have to file. Good luck buddy! Brian |

I've mentioned this before but I'll do it again here 'cus I think it's important. I solved the whole problem by having my rims electrically striped and then having them professionally polished. I personally think they look better that the orig. chrome ones ever did. the polished look really goes with the look of the car. I have always held to the idea that things that are steel should be chromed and alum. things should be polished. I use Zoop on the alum things and they have held up just fine. I drive my car almost every day and show it often. I only have the front rims done at this point but soon one of the rear rims will be ready(I only have one spare rear rim). It ain"t cheep to do this but when looking at the overall "down the road" costs I think its cheep. I have one of the very best polishers in the world at my disposal--he is very, very good. The front rims ran 400.oo ea, just for the polish job. The rear ones will be more of course(don't know the exact $ 'cus there not done yet). I'm just trying the get the car correct, in my option, so I do get carried away, or maybe someone should carry me away-can't help myself great fun, Obi-Wan. |

I agree they look like crap to me and may as well not been done to come back like this.I guess that is my reason for replating but buy diff.brand.Compare the cost. |

That's an absolute joke of a plating job. Chrome is the only way to go but not with that company. Ask for Don 714-639-1371 and tell him Larry Lord sent you. Larrypen was the last to get his plated there. |

My assumption from reading the posts here is that the pitting and pealing that's common on these wheels (mine had less than 20,000 miles)CAN be resolved IF proper preparation is given the wheels prior to chroming. I just told Wheel Concepts that at the very least I should have been advised that they could not make the barrel of the wheels show quality so that I could make a decision on what to do. Hell, if it were my company those wheels would never have been shipped out! The saga continues... |

Bob did you take any pics before you sent them? There is always the question of whether or not you got yours back. Engraving on any part that is covered by the tire would be a good way to go. |
