Butchcee,
Thank you again So it appears that the one on the right is the new one it looks like the "X"Number that I recall seeing on mine. The plastic parts do scare me, especially since they surround the ball its self! typical design to cost issue and surely will be something that will require replacement in the future.

I'm guessing no worries Jim. Even if the plastic failed, the ball wouldn't come out--just rattle and bang. The days of extensive use of beryllium copper in a car are probably gone. With the new vehicles being lightweight and better engineered, there probably isn't a need for that type of bearing material--besides, when they were using that, planed obsolescence wasn't a factor. Also, beryllium is pretty high up on the bad metal list.

To add to this story I just had my passenger side lower ball joint fail. I was one of the upgrade ones. I helped do the upgrade and I know it was the correct part and it was installed properly. The only "warning" I had was a small squeak when I first started my kat and turned the steering or went over a small bump at the end of my driveway for the first 50 feet of moving the car. This had happened on several occasions for the past few days. Last week and week end I went to Hot Aug. Nites in Reno and the noise was there for just A few feet on sat nite. I would have never have given this a second thought. Tuesday morning I left my house to do some errands and got around the corner by about 20 feet when the ball joint broke off at about 2 mph. BOY, was I glad that didn't happened flying down the highway form Reno-how lucky can I be!!! Nothing was hurt! just my pride in my ride. After searching in parts stores for a set of wheel dollies(and not finding any) I went home and got my floor jack and jacked up the other side of the front end high enough to put the wheel in side the center area of a simple furniture dolly and centered the ball joint pieces back together so everything was just as though it had not happened. Then with a couple of friends watching the wheel I slowly put the car in reverse and SLOWLY backed back home. I put it in forward gear and slowly put her up into my driveway and on into my workshop where she is now. I've called the Dealer to see what can be done in terms of any warrantee(???). In the meantime I've got one of the new balljoints and as soon as I can find it I'll change it. At that point I'll be able to really look it over and report what I find and of course we'll see what develops with D/C. I'm out of warrantee BUT I think they need to look at what's happening since I'm not the only one with this failure. I have some 68'ooo++miles on Midnite and this dosen't sway me in any way against the car or the design of the balljoints. I'll let you all know what happens, Obi-Wan

Wow--that's interesting. I wonder if the joint went dry or the plastic failed first? The top cap plastic liner has a hole for grease to flow through if there was a fitting installed like the top ball joint. Wonder why they didn't follow through? We could probably put a fitting in without too much trouble.

Upon further inspection, it was discovered that the spring and shock absorber had separated on one side. There was no problem whatsoever with the ball joint. Bob Goetz came to the rescue with a new Koni spring shock that will allow Mike to make Woodward Dream Cruise after all!
