Let him drive it away from traffic and tell him DO NOT pull into any parking spaces, back it in. I let an older lady about 73 years old drive mine around the parking lot at a Home Depot. She said it was her birthday and I was in a good mood. Her kids ran to the store to get a camera for pictures. It was worth seeing her face when I gave her the keys. Not sure how many times that will happen in the future... |

After reading the first 13 replys, I have to say, I was a little surprised. I really expected more yes's than no's. I'm getting more yes's today. Thanks for the reply's, and kind comments. Keep 'em coming. I'll definitely talk to him first as to whether HE thinks he is comfortable enough with his abilities, and still, I will make the final decision. I appreciate the good input and ideas. He's been a rider a few times. In all honesty, I don't think a parking lot drive would do it. Besides, our malls are also full on Sundays. We used to run the roads quite a bit growing up and even were going to try out for some Dukes of Hazards type stunt driving back when we were 19. We looked enough alike, we could even sub for the cameras for each other depending on road type. He was better on dry roads and I was better on wet or dirt roads. Being in Houston, we pretty much have alot of traffic most anywhere. I was kinda thinking Christmas would be a good time since most folks would be inside and off the roads. Another good idea is to take a cruise out to a remote site and turn over the keys. I might also wait til after his surgery and see if things change with that. We'll see. AC - what I'm hiding, only the privileged get to see. Should I give her the privilege? Keep the comments coming. |

Mickey, As I stated before do it. Tell him you'd like to offer him the chance to "take it for a spin". He'll probably be more concerned than you are about where and when. Suggest a little ride in the country or some cool cruising avenue if he thinks it'd be safe and you'd be seen. Remember how you felt the first time you drove the car? Share it. Sounds like it may be one of his last chances to drive. Never know what he'll say, he may turn down the chance, I doubt it though (would you)? |

it's only a car,,,,,he's a friend. Make it happen. There isn't a part on your car that can't be replaced. Don't you wish you could say the same for your friend? This message has been edited by Larry Lord on 12-22-2004 at 08:41 PM |

Maybe under his current circumstances he wouldn't feel like driving it (or trust himself enough). Maybe he would be happy just going for another drive! |

Mickey: All joking aside let him drive it. What do you have to lose?? When you look back in a few years you will be glad you did. I took a friend of mine on a Tandem jump a few years ago he had become a Quad but could move his arms just a little. One of the hardest jumps I ever did. But when I look back it was one of the best. Just do it we can fix your car later.. Uncle Larry |

I thought it was time to update this thread. (My friend had his back fusion surgery and is getting around ok. Still in pain, but getting around.) I had been out cruising around and it was late in the day so I headed home. When I got close, I decided I felt too good to go home, so I drove by my buddy's house. I walked in and held out my hand to shake his in greeting. Only, I still had the keys in my hand when I did that. (He didn't know I drove over in the Prowler.) He looked at the keys, and looked at me, and asked what I want. I told him I want him to be careful. He looked at me strange again and said, Oh, you want me to take you somewhere? I said, No, I want you to be careful. Confused, he said, You want me to follow you somewhere? Again, I said, No, I want you to be careful. He asked what I was talking about? (By this time, his family had gathered around. They knew what I drove up in, and thought I was kidding.) He asked, are these are the keys to your truck? You want me to watch your truck while you're gone somewhere? I told him no, they're the Prowler keys. He asked why I was giving them to him, thinking I was kidding, and started to hand them back. I reminded him that I told him I was going to let him drive my Prowler, and now's the time if he wants to drive it. The look on his face was total disbelief. We went out and got in the car, me in the passenger seat, and headed off. I told him how to work the autostick (he kept thinking it was like a standard, and letting up off the gas when shifting). He drove out of the subdivision and onto the main roads. I directed him towards the freeway. We got up on the freeway and cruised out of town for a few miles. He got it up to about 80 or 85. I told him to go faster if he wanted. He said he couldn't... there was traffic. LOL. We finally turned around and headed back to his house. Neither he, or his family could believe I let him drive my car. I snapped a shot while we were up on the freeway. It speaks for itself... |

That is a GREAT story! I would love to feel the first time I drove my Prowler and the smile again. I remember it, but still would love to feel it again. |

I applaud your willingness to take a chance and provide your friend the opportunity to enjoy the feeling of driving your car. It is apparent that while you treasure your car, you also treasure your friend a little more....as it should be. This will become a memory for the both of you that might be repeated again at some point. I hope your friend will eventually be able to drive on a more regular basis. Again Congratulations on being a good friend. |
