I will more than likely never own a Viper. Not for lack of wanting one but rather the cost of ownership. For those of you who have or do own both, not withstanding the brute power of the Viper, which one takes top honors? ET This message has been edited by ET on 08-07-2004 at 08:50 PM |

Very good question...one which I have pondered myself. I have owned two Vipers and one Prowler. I bought them all new...a red 1994 RT/10 with A/C, a blue/white 1996 GTS coupe and a red 1999 Prowler. When you boil it down, the Prowler draws the most attention from the general public. The Vipers certainly attract the real car guys. The Vipers are a blast to drive but the Prowler is probably the more civilized to drive every day in most conditions. The only answer I have for you is that you need one of each to truly make it right. They each have their own particular charms and problems. If one is fortunate enough to have owned one or both, you are truly blessed with an opportunity that most people will never experience. I hope this is of some value to you...take care, Mike |

.....tough question....I have 3 Prowlers, and 2 Vipers. Prowlers definitely draw more crowds and crowds of all ages. Vipers mainly attract young to middle aged men (okay, teenage girls too). 2 totally different crowds but if I could only have one, it would be Prowler ------------------ |

....the first time I saw the Viper was at the MOPAR Nationals in Columbus Ohio, 1989 or so.....a friend of mine was hired to bring the concept car to the Nationals and I stood and looked at that car all weekend, sort of hypnotized I guess....swore I would have one someday... ....a few years later the local Chrysler plant had an open house in which they invited all local MOPAR enthusiasts to show their cars inside the plant....Chrysler used to have open house in the fifties and sixties to show new products, stopped for a couple of decades, then started again in 1984 and they asked me to bring my 1969 Dodge Daytona to be on "special display" with a new 1984 Daytona....around 1991 or so they had an open house and had a Viper RT10 there....the Viper was in pretty rough shape because it was a test mule and was assigned at the time to the Borg Warner Transmission Plant in Muncie Indiana...it was getting flogged daily....the weather was very "crisp" the day of the show....this guy comes screaming down the street in the Viper, no top, with a snow suit on...remember, I said it was "crisp" out....later that night some of my buddies saw this same Viper in Indy on Shadeland Ave putting away everyone that wanted a piece of the Vipers 488 cubic inches, and he was still wearing that snow suit....I knew then my destiny was a Viper..... ...When the 1992 Viper was released it was the same pricing frenzy we later experienced with the Prowler....I was younger then, and patient....about 1997 or so I found a good deal on a slightly used 94 Viper RT10...it was red, and only had a couple thousand miles on the odometer....it was a chilly day when I went to look at the car in small northern Indiana farm town....I vividly remember the first test ride, the owner of the car scared the crap right out of me....I had NEVER experienced anything like the acceleration this car had....I gladly forked over the $42K and drove the car home, almost scared of it....took me several days to get used to the car....they drive a little different than anything I had ever been in, and it was fast....I just wanted to be careful and get used to it gradually..... ...It was the first Viper in town and it was sorta like "instant celebrity"....everyone knew who owned the red Viper within a few days....kept me busy giving rides to old friends and new friends I didn't even know I had....the fun never stopped..... ....After a year or so I sold the Viper to my daughter and her husband and I bought another '94 Viper RT10.....THIS ONE WAS BLACK!!!...It had several mods and was probably the most memorable car I have ever owned....I was so loud you couldn't hear the stereo.....shot fire out of the sidepipes....first car I ever topped 160mph in.....probably the most evil looking and sounding automobile I have ever owned...... ....I guess old age finally started creeping up on me and I wanted a closed coupe....a friend of mine had purchased a new '96 GTS in Pa. and I had driven out there with him to get the car, it was beautiful....there was a freenzy around these cars also....a few years later my daughter had a red '97 Viper GTS, I drove it around town one day and decided this was what I had to have....I sold "Dr. Evil", the black '94 Viper to a friend of mine...... ....In 2000, thanks to the Viper(VCA) Forum I discovered Woodhouse Chrysler in Blaire Nebraska and a salesman named Bill Pemberton....I got a great deal and ordered my first new Viper, a steel gray GTS with silver stripes....I had sweaty palms waiting for this car....It was like being 16 all over again.....then during the POA "farewell tour" at CAAP I saw a new Viper GTS/ACR in the new dark gray...well, I got squirley again and ordered a 2002 GTS/ACR in the new graphite gray with silver stripes and sold the 2000 to a guy in Texas....a couple weeks later Bill Pemberton called me and said the GTS was soon going to be history, so I also ordered a new 2002 GTS/ACR "Final Edition".....CAAP ran out of parts to build the GTS with the ACR package so they shipped me a plain GTS....I wasn't too thrilled, but hey, it was a new red Viper with white stripes, whats to bitch about....a couple weeks later Bill called me and said he had found a car like I ordered(Final Edition GTS/ACR) in South Dakota at a dealership out in the middle of nowhere....I said "do it" and he got the car purchased for me and now I had a pair of Vipers exactly like I wanted....then they announced the new Viper SRT for 2003, I had to have one of these too...I ordered 2 Vipers, (one for my buddy) and when they arrived he decided he didn't want to keep his so I took both of them....now I had 4 Vipers....I drove the black SRT for a few thousand miles and sold it for $178. less than I had paid for it...it clearly was time to sell it.....I still have 3 of them and am waiting for the official announcement of the new Viper Coupe.... ...I have greatly enjoyed the Prowlers I have owned(stopped at 8, still have the last 2), and the Prowler community is among the best anywhere....the Prowler gets attention like nothing else out there, but the Viper is a completely different experience...the Viper is about raw power, 488 cubic inches of V10 howling at your command....the handling is beyond anything I have ever encountered in any other car....it is a true "street racecar"....I find it difficult to keep the Vipers at the speed limit, they will take you anywhere you want to go in the realm of speed and power....I have had the new gray one to nearly 180mph and it felt like it was glued to the highway.....the Viper is the HEMI-Cuda, of the new age...it will be legendary for decades to come,if only for its pure brute horsepower....I have recently driven a Viper with nearly a THOUSAND horses, it turns the quarter in the high "NINES" at nearly 150mph, I felt like Chewbacca in Starwars when they hit "Hyperspace".......
taken right before I sold the Black Viper SRT...the "SERPENT" This message has been edited by tangled up in BLUE on 08-08-2004 at 09:04 PM |

All I can give you is my opinion, Prowler is much more fun to drive and gets much more looks. In 1995 I purchased a Emerald Green Viper and kept it for 2 years, I just purchased this 97 Prowler and hope to keep it much longer as it is easier and more fun to drive. By the way the dealer did have a 94 red Viper I could have bought for the same price as the Prowler. Barry This message has been edited by bbcar on 08-08-2004 at 12:25 AM |

If I could only have one, it would be my '96 RT/10 (white with blue stripes). Several of the guys have summed it, they are two distinctly different vehicles. The Snake is a street legal race car, the Cat (Mulholland) has awesome looks. Fortunately I don't have to choose. Bill |

I don't own a Viper......don't think I ever would. I do own two Prowlers, though. I don't see how you can try to compare the two, they are two entirely different types of vehicles! One is speed.. the other is cool! If you are lucky enough to have both, you have the best of both worlds! ------------------ Classic/Beautiful - I'm referring to the Cat of course! |

Prowler is definitely the coolest car on the planet and draws an amazing group of people together-it turns more heads and starts up more conversations than any other car I've ever owned(and there has been just a few....) Viper's performance is second to none-looks also go along with it-overall a tremendous package. It draws a different crowd much more ego driven (go onto Viper Club of America website sometime and you'll see). It's sorta like comparing apples and oranges-you may like them both but they're totally different. Prowler gets a 10 Viper gets a 10 Only difference is the crowd on the Prowler site truly ROCKS! ------------------ |

When I shiped my Prowler last year to germany my friend abought a new Viper that we also shipped to Germany. I still own my prowler after 1 1/2 years. The Viper is a performer, but streßful to drive. I dont liked the manual shifting that remains me on truck driving. We crised many times togehter (Prowler + Viper) through the city, the Prowler turns lots more heads than the Viper. Viper is a real muscle car. But on high speed you are doing better with a SL55 , a Garlado or Porsche. The Vipers now replaced/sold. |
