In North Carolina I pay $41.00 a year for the personalized tag/sticker and last year I paid $540.60 in county taxes based upon their value.

I received my renewal notice in the mail Saturday.

Here in Dallas, it's $70.80 for one year. Also in Texas we have a vehicle inspection law. The inspection costs $39.50 if you live in a county that requires emission testing and $12.50 if you live in a county that doesn't. I just thought I'd throw that in since some states do not require an inspection..

Hey, Sunbird - something must be wrong with your bill...

I told my wife about your post Friday night, and she said that my registration had been sitting on her desk for about the last 3 weeks - had a stiff drink - opened it up...

Only $260.00. FYI, I bought my car in August of last year, so this is my first renewal...Paid $34K, so the lower renewal isn't because I got the car super cheap...

A call to the DMV or AAA might be in order for you...I can't imagine that our fees are so far apart. If you're an Auto Club member, they handle a lot of DMV/registration stuff from the AAA office - you don't even have to deal with the lobotomy cases at the DMV.

Good luck.

The tripling of the registration fees takes effect on October 1. I bought my car in October in 2001, so the registration is due after October 1. For those that bought in a month before October and was billed already, your bill will look better, but they will get you next year.

Don - thanks for the AAA tip. I've been a member for 26 years and never knew that...
