Those who have one, would you recommend them to someone else? Also, I know a LOT of people have problems with the Prowler tops leaking - does the hardtop leak as well or does it have a really tight seal? Thanks.

Man, where do I start?

1-Yes I love my hard top.

2-Yes it will leak if you spray a direct hit from the water hose when washing.

3-No it wont leak in the rain normal useage.

4-Had a hard time adjusting for proper fit but now is great just a little trial and error.

5-more head room.

6-Radio sounds better and car is much quiter

7-Color? Orange is hard to match so seems off alittle at times but might just be the lighting.

8-Price? is costly but what you get is more then worth it.

9-Call Bob today and order yours TGF is the best now from
Real Rod.

The tops are well made and very cool. I don't know if they leak, never have gotten one wet.

It takes a little trial and error to adjust the pins and latches.

I found a few picture of my orange top that show a little more detail on the top.

Here is the crate it was shipped in:

A couple with it on the stand:

Here are some close ups of the pins and latches:

And finally on the car:

Steve: have you had any problem with the rear pins coming undone my jamb nuts kept coming loose had to weld a nut on top of the flat threaded sleve inside to hold it while tightening the jamb nut also had to add lock washer.

Top is GRReat.

Here's a few helpful hints:

First, make sure the padding on the cradle doesn't shift - "borrowing" one of the above pictures for reference:

Look at where the cradle contacts the top (right behind the silver nut). The rubber padding on the cradle is held on with a contact adhesive that can (and does) shift - Chip City. Suggest a wrap of electrical tape to hold the padding to the cradle both in front and behind where the hardtop makes contact. It ALMOST happened to me, and it has been reported here that it actually happened to someone else.

Second, if you don't have a second pair of hands readily available to help put the top on and off, it's a fun project to build your own top lift. I based mine on a $80 hoist from Northern tools and mounted it to a sliding track so one person can lift, slide and lower into the cradle without moving the car.

And finally, in response to the quote:

CONVERTIBLE TOPS DON'T HAVE TO LEAK. It just takes persistence and doing several things in the right order (make sure you have the "new" seal design, adjust trunk lid to final position first, "star-wheel" adjustment, glass adjustment, confirm full contact with "glass grease"). I started out with a sieve, it now takes a direct pressure-washer hit for anything to get through.

Good luck. STRONGLY recommend the purchase.

I have had mine for almost a year and agree with what was already said. One drawback is that you do not have access to the spacious trunk area when the top is on. I too had problems with adjusting it but I think I finally got it figured out. I used lock washers to attempt to keep it in adjustment. I would also recommend getting a larger deck protector since the rubber gasket on both the hardtop and softop will make marks in the paint.
The rubber gasket on the hard top storage dolly shifted on mine and I got two tiny nicks in the edge of the top. I used touch up paint and now I watch it a lot more closely. It is simple to install with two people, pretty hard to do by yourself and I have not made a lift for mine, yet.
It changes the look of the car dramatically in my opinion so some will love it and some won't care for it.
I am happy with it so that is the one vote that counts for me.

Ed:

Do you have a pix of yours with the hard top on?

I don't think I've ever seen a red or a yellow with a hard top. I bet your Kat looks fantastic with the red bumpers and hard top!

A little tip on storing your hard top~~~~~I use a sling and a wench mounted to the wall and lift the top up into the celing for storage. One person can put the top on and take it off. This worked well on the TC Maserati I had.

The hardtop is awesome. It really changes the look of the Kat. It’s like owning two Kats, a 3-window coupe and a convertible.

Adjusting the rear hardtop pins takes a little time with trial and error.

I found the extra weight on the rear deck lid created new noises especially when driving over a bumpy road. I was able to solve the problem by adjusting the stops for the rear deck lid plus, I place a small amount of white grease in the alignment pinholes for the deck lid. Noise gone!

I had the hardtop on during the Louisville cruise and it poured rain for several hundred miles on the drive out there and there were no leaks...most of the other folks with the soft tops were leaking.

SuperD,
I have had mine for over a year.
Love it, had problems with Pins, same solution that others has used, lock washer and some lock tite fixed the the problem.
Also had a chip on edge of top caused from stand just like Ed was pointing out.
I wrapped bubble wrap on the entire stand and never had a problem since. Also when it is off, put the cover on and seal tight.
Love it, best investment I could have made, very seldom does it come off. Its great for all the good reasons already noted above.

The hardtops and the complete line of Metalcrafters products can be ordered through Bob Goetz at Real Rod. Bob can be reached at (952) 873-6626 or email at bgoetz@realrod.com, also www.realrod.com.

Yes it seems we have delays on getting the hardtops out to some of you. Usually this is caused by the production getting delayed do to our main business of building the concept cars taking a higher priority and tying up the necessary resources to manufacture the hardtops. I asked the owners of Metalcrafters how we can solved these delays last week and we decided we are going to dedicate 2 men daily to build our hardtops.

Several of you who have issues with the rear pins coming loose, Lock-Tite is the best solution as some of you have mentioned. I do not apply the Lock-Tite to the pins during the final assembly process because it would not allow you to do the final adjustments when installing it on the car. Every car will need a final adjustment to fit the top properly. Each car is a little different in dimensions, not much, but even a 1/2mm will cause it to be mis-aligned. What causes the rear pins to loosen up from time to time is the rear decklid seal settling in it's final position.

Please send Bob or myself an email with any other question that you may have and we will be happy to respond.

First let me say the tops look nice and from the photos appear to be first rate!!

That said, I wouldn't opt for one because I have one on a Porsche Boxster "S" I own. It, like the Prowler top, looks great on and gives the car a whole different look to it but, requires two folks to take it off and a way/place to store it when you want it off. It also seemed that when I wanted the top down (or roof removed) I was 25 miles from home, so it wasn't an option whereas if just the canvas top, I could have hit a button and been topless.

It probably would be a good investment anywhere it snows or gets really cold where you want something more then just canvas over your head but, here (it's mid 70's and sunny outside right now) even in February, that is not a big concern.

Everyone should probably try a hardtop option with one convertible they own and judge for themselves but, for me (living here) it's not a necessity.

We also have two cars with hard tops, both are Mercedes convertibles - a 560SL and an SL500. We have not put the hard top back on since we have owned these cars. Storage may be a problem for some and yes it takes two people to take off or put on. We always drive with the top off in our area, but again the kat sure looks good with the hard top. I guess I bought the kat because it was top less.
