Heheh, not sure what to call the new place yet. At least it'll have a garage for the "Cat". We wanna get a big, but friendly dog to patrol the front and back yard, most likely gonna be a Bull Mastiff. I want to call him "Yobo" but I have to confir with a few of my Korean friends to be sure this isn't insulting towards them. I just hope he doesn't squash out little Datsun (Squeegee) though

Anyone else have suggestions for a big dog? We were really interested in a Great Dane but there's only a 4 to 5 foot fence around the place and I've heard that these dogs can jump. Same thing with Rot Weilers. Man, I really suck at spelling.

Hazen, Great Danes are the most loving dog. there nick name is the gentle giant and it's true a friend of mine has a Mastiff and the damn thing drules all over
as far as the fence goes, get the invisible fence system. It is buried 6" under the ground and the dog wares a collar that gives them a little warning and shock I have it works great . they never leave the property.

Gary, Tell them that they can adjust the power of the collar. They need to turn it up . Plus the collar can't be to loose or it won't make contact.
see ya.

Well, I guess it depends on what you want the dog for......guard dog or just looking for a big dog? I had a Saint Bernard. She was a 150 lb. female named Brandy (how original, right?!) She was the most gentle, loving, protective (of me and the kids) I have ever known. She was a long-hair, dry mouth (no drooling). Everyone loved her, once they realized that her size didn't mean that she was mean. She loved everybody....especially kids. She didn't even care if other dogs came and ate out of her dish in the yard. We had her when my boys were very small and they would try to ride her like a horse. They used her for a pillow when they watched T.V. She didn't care, as long as she could be with them. She even put up with my cat that would try to harass her all the time.....never went after the cat, she would just get up and move! Unfortunately, she developed bone cancer in her front leg when she was 6 years old. We had no choice but to put her down...and it about killed me, too. I have never gotten another dog, but if I do, it will be another Saint......

Hazen, I suggest you keep your dog away from your Korean friends. That is not a rumor. I lived over there for a year and never saw a single dog.

My brother had a dog that would walk around the perimeter of the yard while the "alarm" went off and would wear down the battery and then take off. They got a new system and my brother tested the "gentle reminder" on himself and about got knocked on his butt. I guess the dog was smarter than my brother, come to think of it.

LOL! Those are funny stories. We really like the Great Dane, but like I said about the fence. I forgot all about the drool with the mastiff! We went to a dog show the other week and seen one there for the first time. The guy just ties a hanky to the dogs collar so he can wipe up the drool any old time. Ack, drool sucks. Do Saint Bernards have short or long hair?

We just want the dog for intimidation. Our mini Datsun barks at anything and everthing so he can be the vocal one.

Hazen, St. Bernard's can have either long hair or short hair. Mine had long. There are lots of books on dogs, just go to a pet supply place and look at the books. Typically, the males are larger. I believe that average for a female is 120-140 lbs. Ours was bigger than average. They usually gain weight for the winter (which you don't have). We had a friend who had a male St. named Bear. He was 250 lbs.! First time I ever saw him was literally face to face. I am 5' tall and standing, he looked me right in the eye!! The dog was huge......but beautiful. Very friendly, but you'd never know it looking at it. Their sheer size is intimidating, but they are gentle at heart. When we moved from Salt Lake City back to Denver, we bought a new house that was on a corner in the subdivision. It took us a while to be able to put up a fence, because we moved in 3 days before Christmas. It was the first time we ever had to chain her up. So, we made it a verrrrrrrry long one so she could roam the backyard. The kids who had to walk by our house to school would cross the street and walk on the other side. Once they met her and found out what she was really like they loved her. She never barked. Only at night if someone was around the house that she knew shouldn't be. It was great, because my husband traveled a lot and I was home alone with 2 young kids. She was very protective of us. But she never bit anyone or even tried.

Most Saints have the drool problem, but you can find some that have the dry-mouth characteristic. Brandy was and it was great. If you want a big dog that looks intimidating but gentle, a Saint would be a good pick. So is a Great Pyrenees. Check them out on the internet. Great Danes are wonderful, too, except for the fence thing. Saints will jump up on you (can be trained not to) but they don't jump over fences. Brandy always thought she was a lap dog. Her other favorite thing to do was to sit next to you while you were standing and then just lean on you. If you weren't expecting it, could knock you over!

One other thing, most Saints have the typical face markings (the mask) and the dark coat with white underneath. Ours was the opposite. They called it splash. She had the typical face markings, but the rest of her was white with some brown spots. She was gorgeous and most vets that ever saw her had never seen one before. She was gorgeous.

You have a number of choices, just do some research.

Wonderful didn't even cover it, Hazen! She was a big part (no pun intended ) of our family. Everyone who was ever around her, loved her. She was very sweet and loving (hard to believe for a dog that size, huh?) I was devastated when they told me about the cancer and it was an extremely difficult decision to make. When she died, I could never bring myself to get another dog, but I always said that if I did, it would be a St. Bernard. I have always loved big dogs. Great Danes are cool and I think the Great Pyrenees are neat also.

We had an old 1967 Chevy station wagon that we called the Dog Wagon. We bought it just to haul her around. She loved to sit with the back window down. She would turn herself around so she was facing the front of the car and would actually rest her head up on the roof, with her nose pointing toward the front of the car. The wind would blow in her face and blow her ears back! People driving past us would laugh hysterically, 'cause all they could see of her was this head on the roof of the car! She was the best!
