I joined the Air Force at age 17. At that time the "Lil Red Express" pickup by Dodge was best new thing on the road. I wanted one so much

I really don't know how the post of the week or month works, so I must say Larry Herder should win the contest for the memory of those who fought and lost their lives for the betterment of the American Way.

God Bless America.

Just got back from Northern Mi. Checking it out for a Prowler color tour.
Thanks for all the responses, and thanks to all you Vets.
I wasn't out to win any contests, just curious and proud.

The only thing taking me so long in posting on this subject is how to say thank you to our fighting men and women for serving, and protecting the USA's interest. No matter how many brass bands were or were not playing when you came back from serving our country, I personally am so thankful for all of you!

The news jerks around the Viet Nam Wartime were so negative and degrading about our fighting solders. I didn't like what they said at the time. Most Americans and myself, for sure, were so proud of all the fighting men and women who went to war for us, putting their lives at risk. I mean ALL the wars small or big. It is not funny to put your life at risk in a small country who have only primitive weapons or to countries who are equipped with the latest ones.

So all I can think of to say is THANK YOU!

You ex-service guys did a dirty job no one wanted to do, including me.

I would have been one of the last batch in the Vietnam era but 1 year of student deferment and 3 more of "lottery" numbers and I didn't get taken. I watched a lot of protesters at UW-Madison (Berkley-East) "march against the war". Got gassed right along with them as I rather neutrally took photos of both the protesters and riot police march up the center of campus. Began at UW-Madison 7 days after 3 malcontents blew up the UW Physics building and killed a poor doctoral candidate working on his experiments at 4:00am. What a sight to see the side of that building sheared off! They blew up the bldg. to show how wrong it was for the U. S. to be in a violent war. Can you believe it? Survived the gassing of our twin 13-story dorms (gas suctioned right up the elevator shafts and got all of us). Used to laugh that I graduated with a major in tear gas and a minor in pepper gas! What a time that was!
And now....I make my living selling products to the military personnel and dependents through the post exchanges. I'm proud to work the men and women and appreciate the work they do which lets me be free to do what I do!
Salute!

Hey Larry,

I am currently in the Army. I have been in since 1985. I am a Helicopter Test Pilot and fly UH-1's and UH-60's. Five more years until I can retire. Thanks to everyone that served before me.

A couple of thoughts since this was first posted. While in Korea in 1965 &66, the draft was starting to take 19 year olds, previously it was 21 or 22 year olds mostly. A couple of these new guys showed up wearing Batman T-shirts. I thought they were a little young, since they must still be reading comic books. I had no idea Batman was a TV show. When I landed in Seattle at Sea-Tac airport I saw a bunch of young girls in mini-skirts. I thought it must be one wild city, not knowing this was the latest fad. I didn't know a Camaro from a Cougar, since they were all new cars. To say the world changed a lot in two years is an understatement. Prior to 1965 you rarely heard of marijuana in the Midwest and now everything was readily available. Quite a coulture shock. It felt like a real time warp to me. Then I got carded for 3.2 beer, which you only had to be 18 to purchase. Welcome Home.
