I've installed a front brace on my 1997 Prowler and it has improved the ride quality tremendously. The brace is installed up front just above the battery using the top inside bumper support bolts for fastening.

Here are the details so you can build your own:

Two 5/16" x 2.5" grade 8 bolt with nuts (Pep Boys)

Below is a detailed drawing of the brace with all the measurements

Hey Spoons
That Dirty red motor shot with the suspension bar looks very familiar.
Oh let me guess you changed your classic purple to red just for one shot?

HMMMM wonder where that came from????
I feel bad now because I didn't shine up the the engine area for that shot!!

Great info, your right it helps alot!

They do work, at least for 1997's and 1999's.

Thought about it. Looked at it. Pondered it. Have not acted on it. Is there a benifit to using it on a 2002 and a 2001?

I had both top and bottom braces installed during dealer prep, so I'm not familiar with the ride without them.

I love the way the car handles, and from what I read on this site for several months prior to my purchase, those who installed them noticed a marked difference.

I bought the MTD suspension braces - and I'm extremely satisfied. JMO

I had a brace installed by Darcy at Louisville, I still have not been able to tell any benefit from it. I'll probably take it off and try that for a while. Maybe I will be able to tell the difference when I remove it.

What I have noticed is that it did not make as much differnce in the ride as it does keep the front end frm dancing around. The front tires seem more firmly planted on the pavement. For instances going over expansion joints on bridges and over passes.

I don't have them either. I have found that the rear, under the car factiry brace, gets loose (it's adjustable), and they never put lock washers on. Tighten these baby's up and the cars ride smooth! I don't have a lift or I'd post some pictures.

I'm the same as the Bradens. Thought about it, but never bought one.

I remember hearing mixed reviews about the improved feel on '01 and '02s. Anyone can attest to value of braces on later models?

I'm also braceless, and car handles great for me. But since I have not tried the brace I have nothing to compare to. 2001 Orange.

I have had mine on since I purchased the Kat. Before it was like driving a ping pong ball on rough roads. Now it still hops but stays in same lane.. That is a good thing.

Made a difference for me.

I installed one I made ( very similar to drawing) and my 99 rode alot rougher, especially on So. Cal freeways, but handled better on curves.Took it off before it vibrated the kat apart.

Over all you still feel the bumps but the frame doesn't chatter or rattle when you drive over pothole, man hole covers or extansion joints.

I recently purchased the $99 top brace from Realrod with the swivel ends for my 2000. It seems to greatly help with chatter going over bumps. Overall - It was worth it and the 10 minutes to install.

My kat is a 2000 with the older (99) model Koni shocks. I had a set of solid front braces from MTD and they certainly improved the ride as described by others above. It was VERY eveident when I took the top brace off once and drove without it for a day.

I have now insatlled one the swivel end braces from Real Rod and have noticed even better handling. Couple this with the smoother riding Dunlop tires and the ride is almost "cushy" Well - it's good enough to drive the car daily.

Happy Prowling

Marty

I have an 02. Tried the brace and didn't help at all in my opinion. I drove over the same sections (slightly rough) of highway and could not tell any difference.

I suspect the suspension on newer models may be different but I don't know.

Any more info on this? My rear end is doing the same thing.

If the bolts holding the brace under the transaxle pan and forward braces aren't loose, look through the rear wheels and check the upper lateral suspension links. There are two on each side. If those bushings are worn, it affect handling.

Most people that I've provided replacement links to have reported back that they can feel an improvement.

As to the front, instead of the cross brace, install Larry Lord's front sway bar with Brian Richardson's links. Larry also has replacement front coil-overs if yours are leaking.
