I guess I finished my sound clips first so I am starting a new thread to keep it clean. My sound clips were made by placing a boom box behind the kat in the same place for both setups. I have two different types of clips, WAV files for those that don't mind long downloads and MP3 for those on dial-ups (like me). I have posted the size and approximate time for the downloads (over a dial-up). I still have my baffle tips in. I am going to remove them and make another clip. That will probably happen on 3/30 if all goes well. Stock WAV Clip 29 Seconds 1.3Mb >6.5 Minutes SSS WAV Clip 38 Seconds 1.7Mb <8 Minutes I am anxious to hear Mike's clips comparing them to other exhaust systems. ------------------ |

Cliff, thanks for the sound clips of both mufflers, I'm sure it sounds better in person but I'm not sure it's a $400 muffler. I think before I spent $400 on a SSS muffler I would spend $600 for the Mopar Performance Exhaust system, I hope this doesn't p..s anyone off but that's my honest opinion. |

Sue & Carlee both think the stock is louder than SSS. They didn't know what they were listening to, just did they hear a difference. From the sound bite, I would have to agree too with AL...It is still a V 6 and the Mopar tips LOOK really KOOL. If it doesn't make it sound much better it should at least look good. Once I hear in person my opinion could change. The only change I would like to make in my exhaust is the sweet sound of a V 8. Hope to be able to in the next few years. LOL ------------------ |

Thanks, Cliff, for your efforts. I like what I heard on the new SSS, but not more than the Mopar High Performance Exhaust. To be fair, however, I "heard" a lot of what seems to be ambient noise generated by the garage. Am I right on that assumption? Audio recordings can tell you the truth....or part of the truth. Microphone positioning can make or break a stage performance and I think the new SSS was not given its fair due, just yet. If some enterprising SSS tester could add a waist-high mic position 6-10 feet from the side of the car for the next taping, the impression may be different. Most of us don't listen to our cars from behind the tailpipes but from the side at a comfortable distance. Can a 25mph and then a 45-50mph pass be recorded from a static street position? It might deliver what Jay has promised that an idling/revving car can't deliver. I'm not trying to give you a project but I know Jay has a lot of effort put into this for one audio clip to be the determining factor. ------------------ |

Paul - I don't think the garage added any difference to it. The back of the car was almost out of the garage so the boom box was not really inside the garage itself. ------------------ |

Cliff, nice attempt to capture the sound, but it does NOT even come close to the ACTUAL SOUND... Yes, get those baffles out as soon as possible. Also, one of the Sweetest Side Benefits of the SSS Muffler is DOWNSHIFTING prior to coming to a stop. Downshift 3 - 2 - 1 and tell us your feelings. Al, I agree I can't believe this is a $400 muffler. As to the quality of the product, the unbelievable sound improvement and POWER increase, this would be a BARGAIN at $650. well... the sound difference (in my opinion) is as much a matter of someone's hearing ability as anything. I have really good tonal pitch (musician), but yet have a hearing loss that prevents me from understanding most sung words in any song. I cannot hear a difference in person between the muffler's on Cliff's Kat next to my Orange ( I did hear a slight difference on the tape, but tapes always deal with acoustic surrounding's and I think that accounts for the difference in sound. The SSS muffler's DO make a noticeable power increase. This might be a viable option for those wanting a custom or stock tip. ------------------ |

jay, does make a very good product and i think for prowler owners wanting a little extra and not having to pay a bundle this is a nice way to go. Myself, i like that v8 sound that say's get outta my way boy!!!, and i'm all for torque, that is what this car is 1/4 mile and less and a cruizin car, not a top speed car, floats around too much on highway? |

Is there any dyno numbers or are these seat of the pants horsepower gains, I quess we'll have to wait to see if there's any gains over the Mopar Performance Exhaust system if there is any? This message has been edited by Al's Prowler on 03-30-2002 at 02:43 PM |

Cliff, thanks for the sound files. It appears to not have any "backtalk" when letting off the gas?? Perhaps in real life it sounds better but I'll have to agree it doesn't sound like a $400.00 exhaust system.. I installed the old Smithy glass packs some time back and when I start it up next to the Viper guys it sounds strangly very close to their sound... They themselves have commented how it almost sounds like the V10... Also when I let off the gas it "pops" and "cracks" just like the old systems we knew and loved... I guess it is in the ear of the beholder and what each of us likes.. Smithy's $52.00 a pair and labor $80.00 to install... I guess I'll have to make a sound file but I'll do it on the road so the shifting and power is heard under a load along with the backdown.. ------------------ |

Fred - yes there is "backtalk" when letting off, especially when downshifting. It doesn't do it when revving at a stand still though. When I took it to the muffler shop to have it fitted correctly he asked if I paid "somewhere around $400 for it" and I just said yes. Don't know if he thought it was worth that much or not but that is the price he put on it when guessing the price. Laddie is going to have his kat dyno'd on Monday, then we will know the real gain in hp. Everything we have noticed is "seat of the pants" and it is very noticible I called Paxton to see if they would dyno my kat but they said their dyno was booked

I've not heard any comments relative to the SSS muffler that it sounds like a V-8. That's quite alright and it's understandable, let's face it, there is no Santa Claus and it's a little tough to make a V-6 sound like a V-8. I listened to Cliff's sound files and I agree it may not be fair to make a final muffler decision from a boom box tape? At this point (for true) I've had the opportunity to evaluate Performance enhancing Glass Packs (Sure Sounds Shitty) and the (Sure Sounds Sweet) Performnace killing Borla. I'm anxiously awaiting Laddie's Dyno results of the SSS. I'm going back, or to the system that provides the best PERFORMANCE! Whatever system it is, Period!
