Today marks the day that my 2001 has a fully functioning TPMS system after all 4 sensors were diagnosed as dead. This has been a long road and involved help from Tony and Tom with some indirect help from Wildcat. Thanks to all!

In summary:

The 2001 system (and earlier) is no longer viable due to unavailability of the 315MHz sensors. The 2002 model uses a 433MHZ system and can be swapped in to replace the older one. As you all know, it is difficult to find the module and some suppliers sell them as gold bricks. I was pointed towards Autel, but they told me directly that their dual frequency sensors will not work with the older 2001 receiver. They may work with the 433MHZ, but I did not want to attempt two experiments concurrently.

The 2001 receiver module is # 04815227AD
The 2002 receiver module is # 04815227AE

In attempting to obtain a 2002 model receiver, I noticed that Wildcat had used a model labelled 04815227AG. This turns out to be a unit from a later model 2006 Viper. I then noticed that a 2003 Viper unit is a 04815227AF. The progression was obvious.

After chatting with Tom, I bought the 04815227AF. There were a number of 04815227AF’s and 04815227AG’s on eBay but they went quickly and I was lucky to get this one for $50.

Tom supplied me 4 x 52088990AE sensors which also check out against the Prowler and Viper parts list. In short, go Viper to solve this issue!

I visited my local dealer who has a DRBIII, and after some nudging, they were able to program the sensors to my receiver. I say nudging because I was told “Your old sensors are fine”, “Your new sensors are aftermarket”, “You have to have them inside the wheel to program them”. All incorrect. I became insistent and they finally paid attention.

So, with the sensors unmounted, they programmed up fine. My intention was to place them in a custom chamber, pressurize them and see if the light went out. But, as I found out, the chime was now active. So, the dealer foreman and I decided to mount the sensors since they were now reporting atmospheric pressure. He told me he would not need to remove the tires and could compress the sidewall back far enough to mount the new sensors. And that folks, is all she wrote. They are installed and fully functional.

With some pride, I whipped off the black tape, and watched my Low Tire light toggle back and forth with the ignition. The chime has obviously reset since it is not active during any part of the startup. I should probably drop the tire pressure in each wheel sequentially to verify operation but that is for another day. I hope this helps other owners who would like to jettison the tape! And knowing you have a TPMS is comforting, to say the least, right?

Here is a pic of the PC boards of the 04815227AD vs the 04815227AF. As you can see, the antenna is MUCH smaller and the board is simpler.

I too have been researching this same scenario in regards to my 2000 Prowler.
Last summer I needed new tires and this time around was unable to acquire run flat's as I would have preferred.
My original TPMS was still working at the time and I planned on swapping out a better set of rear wheels while I was at it.
As it turned out, the retaining nuts on the sensors were corroded and there was a chance they would not be removed without damage so I opted to retain the flaking wheels and keep functioning TPMS since I now have non run flat tires.

My search for a 2002 module and sensors began and I eventually learned that the 2002 module had been discontinued after it was on back order for close to a year.

Since then I also got a Viper module and matching TPMS sensors but have yet to swap them out.
As of today my car is still in winter storage so I can't say the original TPMS still functions. When it eventually fails, I will then swap them out and confirm this system has worked for me too.
