Just got my new copy of Turbo, and yes I understand that this rice cookers got a big turbo and juice. But what I can't understand is how a front-wheel drive (our same drivetrain), 4cyl. can do 10 second passes on the 1/4; from a stock 94hp modified to a whooping 694hp engine. And us with a stock 253hp are struggling to achieve 400hp (Dean Prodromides). Nothing bad about DP's Prowler (I luv it), but I just want to know why can we achieve those type of numbers. This car is a Mitsubishi Mirage doing 9.73s @ 152mph Just a little

Pirana-Small displacement motors have been making big HP for a long time. I cant find my reference books, but I think the Offy's of the 30s were making 500 hp, blown with alky on 125 cu. in. or less. I made this point before on another site. If a vette can go 172-stock, how come a nitrous Prowler can't achieve that speed? Gotta have similar HP-no? I think the speed is managed by the PCM-powertrain control module, to limit the fuel at high speed and slow the car down. Another thing about the Honda V-tec motors is the ability to have dual lobe capability for the cams. The lifter rides on a low lift cam for torque, and shifts over to a high lift at high rpm. Pretty neat! I think the main thing is that Honda hasn't kept their fuel management systems a dark secret making it easier for those that want to tailor the curve. They can tailor their fuel and timing curves from a laptop making track tuning a science, but possible! There is less demand for the 3.5 of ours so advances are slow. All the stuff we are doing now are band-aids to a limited system. |

Oh boy, my type of subject. These motors are producing about 200 stock and are definitely the most detuned cars out there. The Extreme motorsports Mirage (with a motor swap) utilizes the 4G63 motor, the same as DSM's (Eclipse/talon/ laser) and is producing whopping HP and Torque bands. This is the same race motor Mitsu used in their rally cars such as Evolution's. The FWD's running have to have a physics cheating suspension to start, look at some of the Hondas, the strut towers are welded to the cage. There is a lot of suspension tuning and driver acclimation involved becuase it is so new. DSM's are real cars. Here's some more interesting facts. -Tube frame with 4g63, 8.47@157 -10.02 Talon, full interior, radial tires, no nitrous (there are about 10 others running 10.7's or so) -Two FWD's running 9.7's -And feast your eyes for a future Turbo Pirana Two cars, unibody, nitrous, running 9.102@157 and the other 9.18. Both on the brink of 8's UNIBODY. -and many 11, 12, 13 second street cars Just a lot of boost from ball bearing turbos and some nitrous and excellent tuning(oversipmlified of course). Keep in mind also that these times have dropped dramatically in the past year, at the end of last year only 2 cars were in the 9's. Kinda exciting!!!! Not any 694 HP, as I will continue to say, this stuff is changing monthly with DSM's. They are probably producing 750+ to the wheels and are producing 800 at the fly. Ummm, this will equate to 7's in the next couple of years. As for tuning they are using stand alone engine management systems such as a Haltech and they have a lot of tuning time, and these premier tuning shops have Dyno's so they are tuning their cars before they race. http://www.dsm.org |

JMC-thanks for the dsm site! I just gave a quick look around-seems pretty neat-especially the HP calculator. I wish somebody would get on our team, Prowler, to take it to the higher levels reached by the 4 cyls. |
