Earlier today I noticed a strange whispering, winding noise. Could this be a Idler pulley?

The volume doesn’t change as you move around engine... can you isolate it to one area?

Take the belt off and run it and see if it goes away.

Sounds like a bad bearing to me,, best guess from the videos.

Do you have a piece of heater hose,,, 1" x approx 2',, works best. Use it as a stethoscope to see if you can isolate the noise.

Hi Hoagie1,

The sounds might be the idler belt pully. Seen the issue before on the 3.5l engines on Chysler vehicles. The quickest way to diag is to go old school. Take a long screw driver and place the tip on the back side of the idler where it bolts to motor while the engine is running. Then place your ear on the handle end. You will be able to hear the growling noise thru the screw driver to pinpoint the noise. Hope this helps you to find the issue.

Some Prowlers have a decoupler on the front of the alternator. The decoupler can go bad and the alternator still be good. That’s what happened to me and it made a similar noise.

2000 and up Prowlers have decoupling alternator pulley.

Pulley is replaceable, you do not have to buy a complete alternator.

Thanks everyone.

I too, think its the decoupler on the front of the alternator, the sound is coming from the front of the engine.

I'll be fiddling with it later today.

garryforrestuk If you are coming to the states . order one of these . It's just the front of the Alternator 44 dollars . If the bearing is gone it will make that noise . It doesn't mean the alternator is bad .
Very easy to change.

That is a bearing in the picture that makes the noise.

Sometimes depending on how bad the alternator decoupling clutch bearing is if you rev your engine up real high and turn the key off you may hear a bad alternator bearing continue to spin after the engine stops for a few seconds.

Hope this helps

Thanks everyone, I forgot to post what the noise was.

Alternator Decoupler Idler pulley and the serpentine pulley.
The bearings were going bad in both.

I know this is a very late response however, that Growling noise you hear when turning off the car is the D-coupler on the alternator.
