Gents, When I replaced my OEM fuel pump this weekend I had to cut and solder the black and red wires together. These wires are outside of the pump canister body itself, but still in the fuel. I cut both wires right next to one another. I also used heat shrink tubing around the solder joints. (regular electrical tape melts in gas) Then I gently bent the two wires away from one another and reinstalled the pump. Hind sight is always 20/20 and I now feel I should have staggered the cuts, one above and one below to avoid any possible shorts. I took a piece of shrink tubing, shrunk it on a piece of wire and soaked it in gas overnight. The shrink tubing did not degrade in any way. Am I going to blow up some day because I made the wire cuts in the same spot? I took the Kat out for a drive and everything runs great, but I did not sleep very well last night. Any advise(other than Ambien)? |

you won't blow up.as long as the wires are covered, which you did w/the shrink material.i do believe the 2 bare wires would have to be out of the fuel and touched together to create the spark needed.kinda like twa flight800. ------------------ |

Like catfish said, you are safe.. It is a closed system and heat shrink will get the job done... The plug that the wires run to are also in the tank and are exposed to the fuel and vapors.. This a factory design just like many other car makers.. Don't Worry Be Prowlin! Good Job on the repair... John(onecatnodog)Collins |
