The car that I am negotiating to buy has the chrome wheels on it.The owner said the chrome on the insides of the wheels was starting to peel and flake off.I know from you bunch that this is a common problem.
The guy has had the insides smoothed and painted silver,it doesnt cut it in my opinion.
I am thinking of sanding down the insides and polishing them followed by a laquer coat.My other thought would be to smooth the insides and paint them a nice satin black.I think this may make the wheel look bigger?
Please let me know your thoughts or solutions?

My thoughts would be to have the inside of the wheels powder-coated. Powder-coating is much more durable than paint and will easily withstand the harsh environment of brake & road dust, extreme temperatures, throwing pebbles, etc. Plus powder coating is available in a wide variety of colors. You might think about having them coated the same color as the car for example. Another popular option is a bright polished aluminum look.

Personally, I don't think paint would hold up over the long term.

I sanded the inside, only a strip about 3" wide in the center. It removed 99% of the peeling. Then I painted it a metallic Gray. From the outside you never notice the gray where you certainly did notice the peeling. From the inside it is still Chrome so you don't notice the gray either.
Now purist or those with unlimited cash will say it's a cheap way to go, but it looks a whole lot better and it is all I could afford until I buy a new set of Dayton Wire Wheels.
