First of all, I drive my Prowler daily to work. It's a '99 and has 116,500 miles. Last Thursday I was driving home and when I went to back into my garage (going slightly uphill) it started jerking and clunking on me. Kind of startled me so I stopped, shut it off, got out and looked underneath to see if something broke. Didn't see anything. I then re-started and put it in drive and it knocked a bit but then started going so I decided to drive it around the block. No issues in the higher gears. They all shifted like normal and then I tried them with the AutoStick and everything seemed fine with no delays in shifting. Once I got back, I went into reverse and same thing, jerking and clunking. I eventually got it parked. The next morning I decided to try again and when I left out of the garage it did a slight jerk (not like the day before) so I took off for work. When I left work Friday, I had to back out my parking spot and it would not go into Reverse at all. I thought I would open the door and maybe push with my foot to back it up but it is just a bit uphill backing out of the parking spot so I couldn't budge it. Turned it off and thought for a few seconds. Decided to start again and it was jerking while in Reverse. I got a little ticked off so pushed the gas a little and it bounced and jerked but backed up enough so I could put it in drive and get home. Decided to drive straight into the garage and park it. I scheduled an appointment with my local Dodge/Chrysler dealer today. I had not even started it since last Friday but of course when I put it in reverse to back out everything worked perfect! I still dropped it off for them to look at. I got a call that their tech recommends to rebuild the trans-axle but they don't do that type of work and recommended a transmission shop. Anyone else experienced these symptoms? Does this analysis make sense? Recommendations? |

Sorry you’re having a problem Jeff, sounds like a transmission shop where you can get a professional opinion might be your best option. Good luck, I hope it’s something relatively inexpensive to fix. Jer |

With 116,500 miles on it, I would say transmission filter is clogged up and fluid is shot. Reverse requires the highest hydraulic line pressure of all the gears in trans to operate properly. When a filter starts to clog, reverse is first area effected due to restriction and resulting low fluid pressure. Drain fluid and replace filter. Be sure to clean magnet that is in oil pan. You should replace fluid a second time after putting on 50 or so miles to get more of the old fluid out that is residual in torque convertor. Probably do not need to replace filter again. You can pump fluid out through filler tube and not have to drop pan a second time. There is some controversy on doing a complete fluid exchange/flush by external machine. USE ONLY MOPAR ATF+4 FLUID. When I had my transmission pan off I installed a drain plug. Takes about 15 minutes to do. http://www.amazon.com/80250-Automatic-Transmission-Universal-Drain/dp/B00029WR78/ref=sr_1_1?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIv4yy2K_w5QIVQx-tBh39SQ0eEAAYASAAEgLqqvD_BwE&hvadid=242094402703&hvdev= t&hvlocphy=9016181&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=16766396078423839307&hvtargid=kwd-417343500638&hydadcr=5741_9590434&keywords=b%26m+transmission+drain+plug&qid=1573963704&sr=8- 1 |

So the latest is that when I picked it up from the dealer, I was driving home and 1/4 mile from home I heard something clunk and now there are no gears! I was stranded, so I called my 17 year old son to run to me to help me push it. He showed up and I made him jump in and I started pushing. Luckily another person stopped and assisted so we could get her back home! I started searching my local area for a transmission repair shop and hopefully I can get it to one this week... I'm sure the cost just went up on this repair! Thanks for the replies and advice! |

Thanks Ed! Does anyone happen to know the gentlemen from Ed's post? (username=wworkx) I just sent him a PM last night and I've already coordinated with a service shop and they are willing to receive it and replace it. They said it would be a 4 hour job... |

Also check the front and rear drive shaft "rubber universal joints" for looseness or failure. |

Take the good advice of others.....purchase the available NEW transaxle, have it shipped to your shop of choice, and perform a total R&R, Good idea to install fresh ATF in the new unit you purchase as you don't know the quality of it sitting around. Prior to installation into the vehicle add a magnetic drain plug as others have recommended. |

So I've been discussing with a local transmission shop and a local Chrysler dealer. The individual selling the transmission gave me a reference of Bill Gill of Michigan and stated he owns prowler-parts.com. That web site is redirecting and seems malicious but it could just not be the correct site. Anybody know Bill and how I might get in touch with him? |

He is a reputable person. I think he was trying to sell all his inventory but don't know if that worked out or not. I can't provide any other way to get hold of him other than the email address you have or trying to send him a PM on this site. I know it is harder to get hold of him in the winter. |

You should also check to see if torque converter comes with transaxle your purchasing. If your current transaxle had a catastrophic failure, then there's going to be metal pieces in torque converter which can not be removed easily. Also, there was a change in torque convertor design and operation in 2001. Be sure transaxle you are purchasing is compatible. |

I have a used one for $500 FOB Ontario. I noticed when I removed it that the driver side axle shaft was loose so it probably needs a bearing.Came out of a 18K KM 02. |
