Dealers charge a lot of money to fix your car. Parts alone are outrageous and I'm sure there is markup like you were buying gold and sometimes things are a dealer Item only. Labor is another story. I once save a bunch of money on a manual transmission repair by removing a manual transmission myself and taking it to the dealer and having them put the new part in the transmission and then I reinstalled the transmission. I didn't have the special tools needed to do the job. The down side is if the repair didn't fix the problem they may not want to back it up because you did some of the work. I would suggest you make arrangements with the dealer ahead of time and get a price on the repair you are having fixed.

How much did you save on this repair? How long was your car out of commission? If you would of taken the car to the dealer, what was there turn around time for the repair? After the dealer didn't fix the problem, how did you get it fixed?

Your first question: How much did I save on the repair. I don't remember the amount because it was a long time ago but it saved the cost of a mechanic removing and reinstalling the transmission. I have several cars so how long the car was out of commission didn't matter, If it was my only car this would be critical. The dealer could do a job like this in a day, if memory serves me correctly I took the transmission to them one day, they fixed it the next and I put it back in on the third.
Could be I didn't explain it right, the dealer did fix the problem but the bigger problem was yet to come. My wife divorced me and took the car in the divorce!

I am a diehard do it yourselfer. My cars rarely go in the shop except for warranty work. I don't like going back and complaining when they screw something up so I do it myself if I can.

The last episode I had was at Costcos. I bought 4 new Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires and they recommended replacing the gaskets on the valve stems for the low tire warning indicators. The next morning I had a flat! They put the gasket in wrong on the TPMS and it was cracked. I don't do tires for obvious reasons but I have had some bad history with tire shops in the past. Mostly wheels almost falling off, bent rims etc. I am a mechanic by trade but don't work on cars for a living anymore.

It's nice to know who your friends are.

That was a long time ago and it was a 4 cylinder mustang, black without air. I missed the car more than her.

Since this thread has veered of course, slightly, I will tell you a long story.
I was attempting to locate and repo an Altima. An 80 year old woman owned it but the son was supposed to be driving it. They had two OLD addresses. I finally left a card at one address and his ex-wife called me. They have been divorced 18 years. She said, "I was hoping you were going to tell me he was dead". I said, "that sounds kind of harsh" and she said, "not if you knew the entire story".
Fast forward a couple of weeks, I am still trying to find him and found an address on line. I went there and it was ex-mother-in-law # 2. The daughter just happened to be there. A couple of days later I was talking to her again and she told me the guy (her ex) was renting a house a block away from her. I commented, "that must be nice". She gave me a look. I mentioned what ex-wife # 1 had said and she responded "that would work for me, also". He owed her over $ 20,000 in child support so if he died she would at least collect SS. I told her the car was not at the address she gave me but another car was there and so I thought he had switched with a friend. She said, "that is not possible, he doesn't have a friend".
I ran the other plate and then went to that address across the river and got the Altima.
The old lady is in a rest home, the son used her credit cards and ran them up to the limit, she lost her condo and is in a rest home in Indiana. Nice guy.

Is that the same club Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian are in? LOL

New Jersey Nets power forward Kris Humphries -- better known to the general public as Kim Kardashian's ex-husband -- is the most disliked player in the NBA, according to a survey conducted by Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research that appeared on Forbes.com. James finished second.

Some of you may have seen an episode of Hawaii 5O a few weeks ago. One of the stars mentioned he was going to get married to a helicopter full of Navy Seals.

One said "Why not just find a woman you hate and buy her a house".

Having been there twice, I thought it was funny.
