I am in the process of converting from silver to chrome wheels and I was wonder what is the best method for implimenting wheel weights on the chrome wheel? Place the weights in the recessed spoke areas? How do I go about getting the old weights off w/o damaging the brittle chrome? ------------------ |

Use the weights that have an adhesive on them, They stick to the inside barrels of the rims. |

weights go on the inside only.when taking off the adhesive weights pry off w/a screwdriver w/mnasking tape on end so you dont scratch the chrome.then use a rag soaked with lacquer thinner to loosen up adhesive.if you need to use a plastic scraper to remove excess glue. ------------------ |

Good luck getting the adhesive from the weights off of your wheels. The adhesive is very hard to remove. Several months ago I had all my wheels balanced. I took each wheel off and tried to get the adhesive off. I used Goo Gone. Let it soak on the adhesive for quite awhile. This help a little. I then had to use my fingernails to try to get the remaining adhesive off. My fingers were bleeding after this. Luckily when they put the new weights on, it covered the area that had some remaining adhesive. Be careful when removing the weights. They are very hard to remove. I used a fine tipped flat blade screw driver. There is no way to prevent an occasional small scratch on the wheel. Just go slow. It took me an hour per wheel to remove the adhesive. After you have new weights put on, wax your wheels. |

Alternate WD-40 and Goo Be Gone and carefully with razor blade flexed to match wheel contour. About 15 min a rim. |

try a plastic putty knife to remove the weights. Let them put new ones on unless you have chrome ones. then you might want to try and reuse but I would not recommend it brake cleaner..........any auto parts store of probably department store with automotive department like walmart |

The easiest way to remove the weights is with dental floss. Take an 18" piece between both hands and use a sawing motion, back and forth, to cut the foam tape underneath the weights. Then use WD40, brake fluid, or some other solvent to disolve the remaining tape and adhesive. Acetone works great. ___________________ JohnC - Kechi, KS |

lacquer thinner will remove the glue/foam faster than anything else out there.brake cleaner dries to fast. ------------------ |

Hey, What's up Brian? Putting the new weights inside the spoke area is the way to go. After buying new rims and having another shop mount the tires because I was having a problem with bent rims that were way out of balance to begin with that were new from the factory, they refused to mount the new EMT's. I made them run just the rims on the balancer first and went through 5 rims before they came up with rims that were fairly balanced. The dealer tried to blame the tire shop for bending the rims originally when mounting the tires. The real problem was the rims were made bent from the factory. They really are junk. So Good luck and hope you don't have to add pounds. Hope to see you at one of the events soon---Later P.S.-- Don't let them use the air wrench on the rims either, they are aluminum and the jack-A&&es will bend them in a heartbeat. I think I will take each wheel off the Prowler and take them to a near by shop to get them balanced. Then I will install each one myself, by hand with a torque wrench. |

I had mine high speed balanced on the car. I think that's the way to go. I still have gunk I'm trying to get off from the old weights. Gus I'm just lazier than others but may try the wd40 deal. This message has been edited by dbudner on 09-27-2008 at 03:22 PM |

there is only 1 thing that will remove wheel weight glue.all the other stuff listed above is useless and will take all day, thinner 10 min.soak it, scrape it ,gone.available at any walmart or hardware store,in qt or gallon cans and is good for mnany other things and can also be used on car paint .will not hurt the paint. ------------------ |

lacquer thinner is the only thing to use, don't bother with anything else, BTW make sure you get chrome stick on weight for the new wheels, doesn't matter where you stick them, they still look bling. |
