3 to 5 years ago started collecting some cars I thought would go up in value. Most have. Until now. But they are still up from 5 years ago. Thought I would be able to get a storage facility reasonably and have my little "man cave". Finding that almost impossible here in Dayton, Ohio UNLESS you want to pay an arm and a leg and fork over a ton of taxes. Simply cost prohibitive and, as of today, I give. Investigating a garage on my property, but those too have increased 2X from construction costs 5 years ago. Ugh. Move ? Nope. Owe too little and our rate is way to good. Can store 6 cars safely at my home. Trailers for Prowlers ? Yep, I can BUT that will be a chore. Especially with 3 cars and those trailers will NOT sit outside. I'll figure it out. Real questions of this post 1) Those of you with a car hauler (Enclosed) - do you store it off site or at your home? 2) Any suggestions on a decent car hauler, enclosed? I've been told that they are reasonable used, and that I should look at Aluminum. Love what Matt is doing with the Great Loop. For me, Cruisin the coast, Hot August Nights, Cars and Colors etc. would be bucket list things in retirement, 1 to 3 years away depending on health, diagnosis and results of 3 surgical procedures in the next 5 weeks. Would love to acquire a good trailer and rig, and travel to the cool shows in the states when we both retire. Hope this is possible, right now Shelley is not traveling well due to leg and back pain sitting for too long in a car. Any thoughts appreciated. John |

How about a couple Amish wood garages. Mdprowler just bought one, check with him. They are not cheap either anymore, but you can take them with you if you move later on. If you buy a car hauler you can store one in it also. |

Yes, if you want a trailer, it would seem that you really do not want it sitting outside your home. Unsightly and not good for it. And you are looking at $400 or more per month to store them around here, inside. So I need to make some decisions. Also, do you want one that will hull a 20 foot car, or a Prowler AND the trailer ? I would think so. Thats a larger rig I am sure. I am just frightened to drive these cars accross country any longer - Spoke with Ken at Gatlinburg and they rented a trailer - his reasoning was spot on for me. John |

Probably going to sell the 48 foot enclosed trailer at some point soon. I just don't use it anymore. It can hold two Prowlers on the 40 foot floor, 2 Prowler trailers on the elevator lift, and two Prowler go karts. Also has 8 feet of storage on the overhand. I used it to keep some of the collection in before the garage build, and used to pull it to quite a few car shows back in the day. |

Wow, that sounds like some machine ! I am thinking hard about this. At 64, just getting the Bike rack on the back of the car (Needs to be a heavy duty rack for our E-Bikes) and loading the E-Bikes on the rack is a chore! I've always wanted an RV or a trailer - not something Shelley wants but I am wondering if I waited too long. Ed can handle one, so I should be able to right ? Haha. I would think I would want one big enough to handle a Prowler and a Prowler Trailer. And that Bonneville which about 19 feet long. And very wide. Any recommendations from someone who has purchased one recently or has any advice much appreciated. Thanks! John |

As always, well thought out and great advice. Thank you, Larry. And no, I've never pulled anything larger than the Prowler Trailer. And yes, I'm accident prone. John |

ATC, InTECH, and BRAVO all make very good aluminum trailers. They are also some of the highest priced in the market. I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for". If you are going to pull with a heavy duty truck, no real need for aluminum in the size you are considering. If you are thinking 1/2 ton, then aluminum is the way to go. |

I n 2003 I purchased a brand new an 24 Foot Wells Cargo enclosed trailer. I pulled it with a Ram 1500 Quad Cab with a Hemi. It pulled it okay but honestly as I look back on it now, it was probably not enough truck. If I didn’t have the car loaded exactly correct the trailer could be a handful. Going to the Texas Stampede Prowler event I nearly wrecked when a 18 wheeler passed me. He was doing around 90 to 100 mph. Then there was the gas mileage of about 8.2 miles per gallon. I sold it in 2005. I purchase an 16 foot open trailer From Jay Harris in 2005. Much easier to pull, and easier to load. I sold that trailer in 2017. At the age of 71 and having a heart condition it just got to be too physically demanding to deal with. For whatever reason trailers seem to go through tires and wheel bearings much more frequently than cars. In two years of ownership on the 24 foot I don’t recall having any problems. But on the open trailer I had at least five blow outs and coming back from the Prowler Vegas event I had a wheel bearing go bad taking out the electric brakes and destroying the brake drum. I don’t know why it went bad because I always had the wheel bearings re greased before a long haul. Thank God the wheel bearing did not weld itself to the spindle. As it was, it costs $500 to repair and set us back a whole days travel time. I always carried two spares. I’m pretty sure that none of the tires that blew out had more than several thousand miles on them when they blew out. In each case the tire was destroyed. Just sharing my experience with trailers. They can be physically demanding. Jays yellow Prowler on the trailer I purchased from him. This message has been edited by BeWare on 05-12-2024 at 05:41 PM |

Thanks very much - Wildcat and I have been chatting and simplification should be in the works. This (Thanks Rich) may be something I simply waited too long for and, I seriously am not as sharp a driver as I once was. I am not great with the little AJAX trailers and I am probably just wishing. But I have cars that should not be on the road. And I seriously worry about driving the Prowlers long distance now. Ugh. I'll figure it out. Got the two old ones out this PM. Still my faves, and I have a very good mechanic who still works on them for me and he is not only exceptional but reasonable. Thank you, John |

The longer the trailer the easier it is to back up. |

quote: Rick is absolutely correct. The prowler trailer is a pain to back….. seems someone showed you how at an event…… LOL This was a great tow rig, didn’t even know it was there most of the time. Same trailer with my 2018 1/2 ton truck SUCKS Will definitely use sway bar if pulling any distance My Diesel would get 19-20 mpg with out trailer 10-13 with trailer 5.7 Hemi gets 18 mpg with out trailer, 6-8 mpg with trailer & about 70 mph is about top speed to be comfortable Looked at speedo with red truck and in triple digits & didn’t realize it. ------------------ |

John, I'm in the same boat as you. My wife and I love our house and have great freinds in our neighborhood. But I only have a three car garage and four cars so my truck sits outside which is no bid deal. I am looking to buy another car, probably a BMW M8, but have no room. I found a two acre lot just 1/2 mile from our existing home that is perfect but my wife is hesitant to move. She is OK with us building a garage/mancave on it but I would have $750K in it. At 69 years old probably not the best investment so I think I'm going to just add a lift to my garage for now and see how that works for me. I too would love to get an enclosed trailer but I have no where to store it. |

Yep - same situation. I am really re-evaluating everything. I am not sure that a smaller duty truck and a nice trailer, open wouldn't fit the bill for MOST trips. I wash some of these cars with Water (some , a waterless wash is all they get) so they do get wet, I just hate driving in the rain, cause then I have to clean up the wheels etc. Its hard. I need to decide what to sell first. I can build a second garage on my property for a decent price. But my wife deserves a kitchen first. I'm 64 and will be working for a while if all works out properly. She has let me live a real dream in owning some of these. I just love it. Cleaned up the Bonneville and the GTO last evening. Not perfect, but would not be embarrassed at any show with them. They are incredible. John This message has been edited by Stray Cat on 05-13-2024 at 07:45 PM |
