Looking for experienced advise for selling on Ebay. Both small ticket items as well as motorized vehicle. What to do as far as contact to protect security and self, as well as forms of payment to protect from scams, loss, and privacy ...

If prefer to PM, appreciated as well. Will answer any and all questions, but like to know from people that do/have how you go about please. Time to clean some house here - college for eldest in 2 years!

You can accept Paypal so you don't get scammed. A very big problem now is FAKE Cashier's checks. It is a huge problem.
I don't think money orders are a problem, but I am not positive about that.
Your identity is secure until you send the information by email to the buyer. The main thing is to look at the number behind the name, telling you how many transactions the person has made through eBay. The higher the number, the better in almost every case.

Friend got stung few years ago selling a pristine Harley with what turned out to be bogus cashier's check.

Have been told to establish separate bank account if using a wire transfer so as not to give away any "live" banking info. Also to get a prepaid cell phone to avoid linking personal location with phone number for both correspondence and perhaps Craig's List ad (I know, mixing media here, but looking at all options - Ebay first).

thanks Ed for the reply!

I sell some small stuff on eBay, only take PayPal. I've sold one car so far. I was not too concerned about location, as I used my office as site. The car was also on the lot there. I would never have been able to sell that car without eBay...Pontiac Sunfire convertible with blown head gasket! Actually got $1200 for it, and NOT in pristine condition otherwise. I took PayPal for that, too. I was unable to sell a much more expensive car on EBay, 2011 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite on eBay. People mostly have to finance cars like that, and eBay a no go. Stick with PayPal.

Thanks drbutton ... you raise a good question then ... have Harley want to sell as well ... pristine. Paypal only is the way to go? I see some ads that have finance availability ... is that handled separately? I Am so much rookie - have only bought, never sold.

Thanks

You can not use Paypal to buy or sell a vehicle. You can use it for earnest money or down payment. Paypal is not in the vehicle business.

It's getting harder to make a transaction on the internet. I prefer a bank transfer of funds from one bank to another. When I bought my Prowler I told them I can bring cash, they said absolutely not. They wanted a bank transfer with me sitting right across the table to fill out all the paperwork. I said I'm fine with that.

Funny Gort, I recall using Paypal to take payment on the Pontiac, but it was only $1200 which is the same amount as a deposit on many cars. Maybe I am mistaken, as I did sell the car back in 2011...maybe things have changed.

Bought my Prowler from a private party with a Cashier's check plus about $1000 cash (negotiating money). That was over 2 years ago. I was not aware of a rash of fake cashier's checks going around. I learn something every day.

There may be a minimum they will deal with.

I've bought and sold vettes in the high 30s and old cars in the mid 30s. Paypal wouldn't go for it. You can check ,they may have changed their policy.

I bought my Prowler on eBay in 2010. They wanted a $500 deposit through PayPal and the balance was paid through a bank
Transfer. I was under the impression that the seller doesn't want the whole thing to go through PayPal because oof the fees.

Our credit union actually sent out an email to all members warning about the scam.

Also..you can stop payment on a cashiers check. if you tell the credit union something might be illegal about this transaction they will stop payment.
