Has anyone here owns/had or knows anything about the Viper. I'm interested in a 1997 GTS Gen 2 model.
Any info regarding issues, problems etc. just interested.
Thanks in advance.

There is a club devoted to Viper, the Viper Owners Association". A number of owners that post here also belong to this Viper club.

As RPL said, the VOA can provide loads of info. I have a 2001 RT/10. I've had no issues after 20k miles. Thing to look for....

Cracked center console (near elbow) - common problem
The power steering pulley is plastic and the pump bracket is pot metal. some failures have ben reported and there are companies that make billet brackets and pulleys.
Door hinges tend to sag over time, but can usually be adjusted.

Thats about it other than this recall, check to see if it has been done

DaimlerChrysler Has Recalled the 1996-1999 Dodge Viper
Recall #998 Steering and Differential Frame Repair

Cheers!

...depends on what you are looking for...my son in law had a 97 GTS many years ago, he took home the top eliminator trophy at the MOPAR Nats, he sent "Sir Hiss" home on a trailer

Sorry guys for the late reply. Thank you to all who replied. I'm still pondering. ( actual meaning- trying to convince ones wife of the necessity of ownership of said product ).

OMG Dave .... overlooking the single biggest question now since you mentioned the convincing of the wifey aspect .... What color combo is it, and how many shoes/purses/jackets can you buy for your gal that match or compliment it??!

Drove a guy heres 96 blue/white 96 GTS coupe ... as all have said .... wicked fast - NOTHING like Prowler. Down right MORE dangerous than a Vette. Also was very fortunate to drive one of TUIB's 'special' Vipers a long while back ... I was VERY grateful it began to drizzle as we headed straight back to the warehouse without the "opportunity" to get into trouble on the street!!

Well, I'm stepping in the right direction. The wife saw a pair of boots today, so naturally I bought them. Small steps....small steps!

Hi Dave, sorry for the late reply I have only just seen the thread. My best mate has a Gen 2 GTS, I have spent many hours in it around tracks in the UK, Germany and France with the UK Viper Club.

Great cars as mechanically simple but can be a handful if not respected. Alternator pulleys come off so there is a mod for an ally one, most change shifter to a short throw to improve gear change, if tracking you should put baffles in the sump but if you just want one for road use they are robust. I can arrange for you meet up with my mate if you are interested or I also know some of the Viper owners nearer to you in London if you want.

All the best. Nick.
