New member to this forum. I have always loved the Prowler since the day is has come out and, although about a year away from buying one I am here to learn. I live in the Northern Virginia area, but looking to travel to pick one up. Hoping to fly cross country and drive back when I eventually buy one. Which I guess brings me to my first question. I have noticed that this forum people worry about low mileage Prowlers since they have just been sitting around. Should I just work in the price four new tires and a tune up? Looking to forward to learning as much as I can and making the right decision when it is my time to buy.

wannab,,, WELCOME to the POA website!!

You possibly may need new tires, unless previous owner has already done that ahead of time... Tune-up?,,unless the car has a very high mileage I wouldn't be concerned, jmo.

You will learn a lot about the Prowler, as you can read here at the POA for many days/months to bring you up to date. Knowledge is good, and our POA Prowler member community are here to help each other... You will not find a better website to stay informed about the Prowler.

Good luck in your future purchase,,,plenty of good Prowlers out there to buy!!

Welcome to POA! Half the fun is finding your Prowler.
It depends on how low of mileage your talking about and if it was driven regularly. Many of the things that might need done to a low mileage, could also need doing to higher mileage, if owner had not done them. Usually the higher the mileage, the lower the price. Decide on your price range, color, year, mileage and whether you want stock of with mods.

As a proud owner of a low mileage yellow '99, I can attest to it being very well maintained. As with any used car purchase, buyer beware, but I would not make that a mandatory statement for low mileage cars at all.

There is also the old car saying 'rode hard and put away wet' that could apply to high mileage cars ....

Determine your color, stock or customized, and then go from there. Good luck and enjoy the next phase of Prowler ownership - the purchase!

Welcome to the Prowler family. I agree with what has already been posted. My thoughts are that a low mileage prowler is a better buy than a high mileage. Be sure to ask about how the vehicle was stored and any service records. There are a lot of accessories for Prowlers so factor that in if they may already be installed or if it is bone stock. Be sure to do a good test drive and check for leaks and drips afterwards. Stick with the higher hp later year models and look around until you get the color you want.

Welcome to the POA and good luck on your search.

I don't go along with the crowd, give me an unmolested original maintained Prowler with low miles and the rest can be sorted out.
Do you plan on driving it or making it a museum piece?

I don't believe in Museum pieces I believe cars are meant to be driven. Saying that I live on the east coast so this car will probably be only driven a few months out of the year and kept in the garage the rest of the year.

I live in Maryland about 50 miles from you. I drive year round unless roads are salty from snow. You should be able to drive 8 months of the year at least.

I'm in Asheville, NC and drive my Prowler year round. Just turned 80K. I do leave it parked when it snows or gets icy. I watch the weather and don't take it out if it's going to rain or if the roads are wet. As long as it's over 50 degrees or so and sunny, the top comes down. Turn on the heat, a heavy jacket and cap and I'm set.

The 97s have a cast iron engine v. aluminum for the 99s and newer. There is NO DIFFERENCE in performance. I have owned 5 Prowlers and I currently have 3. I have a 97 and I see no difference AT ALL in the performance. If the timing belt breaks on the 97 it will NOT bend the valves, which is a big plus. Buy what YOU want and listen to everyone's advice, not just me or anyone else. Read the Prowler story on the purple menu, if you haven't already. Very informative.
I bought one new and the other with fairly low mileage but it was to get the color I wanted and I got them at good prices, at the time. Prices are in the cellar right now.
Good luck and welcome.

Thanks for the offer but I am still about a year away from buying anything. I still need to get some finances straight first.

If you are looking at a Prowler with extremely low mileage then be sure to check out all the rubber items...hoses...gaskets....boots.....bushings, etc. I bought my second Prowler a little over a year ago with 7000 miles on it and it needed over $2000 worth of repairs to those parts that just sat and rotted. I hope to get this one to the at least the 151,000 mile mark that I put on my first one!
Enjoy the search and don't be timid about asking questions!

It all depends on what you consider to be low mileage. For example our 99 has approx. 43K miles. That is an average 2800 miles driven per year. It will be 20 years old next month. It has been trouble free. Any other car that would be considered a low mileage car. But for a Prowler people might look at it differently. I personally would not buy a Prowler that has been driven less than 1000 miles per year. That would be an average of 83 miles a month. JMO
