http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1658545_1658544_1658536,00.html

"By the mid-1990s, car designers had powerful new computer tools at their disposal, allowing them to pursue low-volume, high-zoot projects that before would never have recovered the development costs. The Prowler was one such project. Inspired, if not plagiarized, by a retro-roadster design by Chip Foose, the Prowler looked like a dry-lake speedster from the 22nd century, with an open-wheel front end and low-slung hotrod fuselage. Except they forgot to make it a hotrod. Intent on containing costs, Chrysler stuck its standard-issue 3.5-liter V6 under the hood, good for a rather less than spectacular 250 hp. The Prowler didn't even have a manual transmission, which made it almost impossible to lay down the requisite stripes of hot rubber. The result was a flaccid little jerk of a car that threatened much but delivered little."

They forget to note that it delivers gawking stares and thumbs up whereever it goes, and the miles of smiles from it's owners. Other than that ...

This guy won a pulitzer prize as an auto critic? What kind of expert focuses on one angle only ( performance).Only an amature would think that the prowler is about performance. He should go back to critic school.

It appears that gentlemen has his own agenda, consisting primarily of hating cars. I quote from a part of his write-up in that article re the Ford Model T:

"Let's stipulate that the Model T did everything that the history books say: It put America on wheels, supercharged the nation's economy and transformed the landscape in ways unimagined when the first Tin Lizzy rolled out of the factory. Well, that's just the problem, isn't it? The Model T...conferred to Americans the notion of automobility.... A century later, the consequences of putting every living soul on gas-powered wheels are piling up, from the air over our cities to the sand under our soldiers' boots...."

I wonder if he'd prefer we return to the so-called "good old days" when people got around via living, breathing conveyances that made life so much healthier for us by leaving horse manure all over the streets?

Alternately, maybe he should do his part to reduce the number of autombiles he decries by eschewing the use of them himself, and then just go take a hike --- everywhere, and all the time. Among other things, that would make grocery shopping so much more fun, especially in the winter, would it not?

Oh yes,,,the good old days. When you got thirsty, you'd stop by a river or pond for a drink of water to hydrate your body,,,,,,,,while your horse was pizzing in the water!

this actually made me laugh, how stupid it is...

name one thing that is wrong about the prowler, except that it may be a 'teensie bit' underpowered.

and that trunk space is limited.

my dad has owned a fair bit of exotic cars over the years, and he and plenty of others tell me that nothing is faster on the back roads than a prowler, that includes f430's and continental gt's

i may not be old enough to drive but i know thats true, power aint everything! thats like giving an elephant 800bhp, its not gonna go anywhere without handling!

I agree that power isn't everything. I sold my '96 Viper because I drove my friend's Prowler and loved the total Prowler experience. Got my own Prowler and have never looked back. The Prowler, for me, is one hell of a lot more fun to drive.

Such bcrap! It was inspired by Tom Gale and the hot rod he built for himself. He took his inspiration to the design studio in CA and Kevin VerDuyn did the drawing for the Prowler. Let's be real....many of the old hot rod coups looked like that.

What am I missing here?
If we are in the 21st century this guy has tagged the prowler as a futuristic design for the 22nd century, perhaps we are driving cars of the shape to come.
Cool :-)

EVERYONE DON`T LET THIS FOOL GET YOU WORKED UP. ITS ALL IT WANTS. ANYONE WHO KNOWS CARS AND WHAT IT TAKES TO BUILD ONE KNOWS WHAT THE PROWLER REALLY IS. MOSTLY BUILT FROM ALUM. THE ONLY VEHICLE EVER BUILT BY THE AUTO MAKERS THAT IS DESIGNED LIKE A STREET ROD. ASK YOURSELFS WHAT THAT VEHICLE WOULD COST IF SOMEONE LIKE FOOSE OR CODDINGTON BUILT IT. THE SAME EXACT WAY. 200/300 GRAND . WITH OUT A DOUBT. DON`T LET HIM THINK ANYONE CARES WHAT HE THINKS!!!!!

Tripped on this while looking at something else.

The 1997 Prowler is one of the WORST 50 cars ever produced.
Oddly enough it was a Yellow Prowler, pretty rare in '97, I think.

Put a performance exhaust on your prowler and tell me it has no guts. The cat screams.
