Hello everyone. I am new to this site and this is my first post. I am shopping for my first prowler. Looking at 99-2002 years. I have done a lot of research so far to understand what this car is all about. Would like all of your inputs on what I should be looking for. Or watch out for. All years being pretty much the same, the prices seem to only reflect mileage and maybe a few accessories. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Coach,,,WELCOME to the POA website!

I'd say its more important to find a car that has had only one or two owners, and has been driven yet well maintained.
Those super low mileage cars or ones with 4, 5, 6 previous owners.....might lead you down the path of fixing the gremlins. jmo

Good luck in your search.....

I think super low Mileage Prowler is the way to go in purchasing a prowler a 25,000 - 35,000 is to high Remember this is car Isn't a primary car so i would look for something under 5,000 miles and not have to worry about the maintenance down the road.

How are you going to use the Prowler?

Weekend?
Primary?
Short distances?

Once you decide on that, then next question.

Do you want to modify the car yourself and enjoy those projects or do you want a modified car already.

Next question your first choice of Color

Next question Budget how much are you willing to spend on your perfect match of criteria.

Next question Why don't you have one already.....

I am not trying to talk you into buying a '97, but I do own a 97 along with an '01 and an '02 and there really is not that much difference in them performance wise. The '97 actually has a nicer soft top in my opinion. If you don't want a Purple, that makes it a moot point, anyway.
I would say to pick your favorite color(s) and post what you are leaning towards and folks will help you out.
Many times someone here on POA will know of a car and will be willing to check out a car for you.
Good luck in your search.

You will never have to worry about maintenance if you never drive it.

IF you are looking for a car to drive and enjoy, I would suggest that cars with 30K miles or over in well kept condition would be the better value.

Typically a car with the "High miles" will have already shown any issues it may otherwise not yet been obvious.

In my opinion many cars with what I consider extremely low mileage (under 10K miles) could potentially be prone to issues from simply sitting.

If you are concerned about resale value and don't plan on actually driving and enjoying the car, the by all means look for that example with under 1,000 miles on it but be prepared to do a whole lot of maintenance on it if you decide to drive it.

In my opinion, try to find a 1997, 1999 or 2000 model unless the car has already had the "Dynamic shocks" replaced with Koni's all around. The Dynamics have a tendency to leak and can't be rebuilt while the Koni shocks can be. The 2001 & 2002 cars were built with the Dynamic's.

If the car already has the Tom Mills replacement window regulators, you would be ahead of the game as the OE will likely fail at some point.

If the car still has it's original tires on it, plan on new tires but be aware that finding matching front and rear tires can be a challenge. There are options out there but not to many at this time.

Give some consideration regarding bumpers. Like me, my car had them already off when I bought it but, I got them with the car. I think it is wise to have the bumpers even if they are not on the car because down the road, it may be easier to sell if you have them. JMO

Good luck looking, I hope you find the right car and then attend local and not so local gatherings with other owners. One of the big advantages to owning a Prowler will be the friends you make along the way.

What ever you do don't listen to Effie. He's the head of that notorious "Garage Queen", Low Mileage" gang that's taken over the "Prowler Nation". Get a hi mileage prowler w/one tire on a banana peel and the other in the grave.

I've only heard of the front being notorious for leaking 50/50 chance but is a easy fix with Larry Lord providing a front pair for only $350 which you can install yourself. ....besides who let's a $40,000 prowler with a 100 miles on it or even less than 1000 just sit without doing any regular maintenance on it .Guys who can afford to let them sit can afford to maintain them. ..so i dont buy that theory of super low mileage cars will have problems

That's why Effie is the CEO of Garage Queens International. If everybody thought like him, there would be no Prowlers on the road. They would all be hidden away somewhere in a garage in the false hope that they would be worth $100,000 in the future. LOL.

Coach

Looking for a Prowler comes down to what you want.

What is your favorite color.

Once you decide color then what are your plans. Drive & enjoy. Store and admire. Use as investment.

If you are going to drive it get one well maintained

As noted, window regulators and dynamic shocks are bad, but not a reason to stay away from a car you like. They both can be replaced.

A young fellow was looking for a car and didn't know what color he wanted, either Purple or Orange. He made a trip to see Ed Monahans triplets and could see purple, red and orange in one stop. He liked the Orange and Mac decided to sell his so he made the trip to get macs car after the nickel tour at Ed's.

The people here are very helpful

Make sure you go to planned events and meet the owners. It is the best part of ownership.

The car is a LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE!

My car has 42,000 miles. Yes high miles for a Prowler, but we have enjoyed putting every mile in it, ok coming back from New Castle a couple years ago with slick rear tires and pouring rain wasn't much fun, lots of pucker power to hold me in the seat...... LOL

Tires don't go by they look new, they are all at least 13 years old. So check them well if the are the originals. Plus they are rock hard.

I put Pirellis on mine last year. I was able to get a matched set. Even getting new tires check date code on the tires. They may be old stock. I look more at the condition than age. But at some point they might be bad and still look good.

Welcome to the POA.

What is your intention with a Prowler, are you going to drive it or will it be a garage queen?

A lot depends on how much money you have to spend. If you can afford a low mileage Prowler and that is what you want, go for it.
There is a supply of higher mileage Prowlers out there but high mileage isn't like normal cars for a Prowler. 25,000 may be considered on the low end of a high mileage Prowler.

Living in Florida you are in luck because there are a lot of them there compared to some northern states.

Good thing that's a white car. Imagine the swirls on a black one with those lovely attendants with their bracelets on

I know, who cares right. It might be worth it.

Not sure of your budget and colour preferences but there is a purple one with silver wheels (99) and 4k mile on eBay on offer for 30k WITH a trailer .. nice combo for a very reasonable price it seems
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-Plymouth-Prowler-/331605716316?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276

Mind you I do not know the car, but states it has a clean title and carafe, so worth a consideration

Well, You guys came back with all kinds of info. Thank you. I plan on driving the car. It is not going to be a trailer Queen or stored. I was into 69 Camaros, which I had 3, now all sold. Now focusing on prowlers, I see you all have your opinions on low mileage/high mileage. Price of course is a consideration. Don't think I want anything earlier than a 99. As far as color goes, I am leaning towards yellow, then red, purple. Again, all my shopping around the only pricing I see is mileage = price. Low miles high price, high miles low price. Never have seen that make so much difference in a collector car. I check this post often so please keep throwing me your thoughts.
